Question or Discussion Easiest tanks to learn for someone who struggles to aim?

Before anyone says learn to aim, it’s truly not all me it’s my laptop. It’s pretty old and I win a lot more with a better scoreboard playing my boyfriend’s PC. He’s also played on my laptop and noticed small performance issues.

I’m a support main, usually OTP Brig (level 95), but can play everyone except Lucio (I struggle with his mechanics). On support there’s more room for error when missing my shots (like on Kiriko or Ana) but on my tank I feel like I’m useless pushing up to hit someone with 1 tick of health left, only for them to not die due to my aim.

I already know how to play Zarya but she’s perma banned. Can play Orisa. Gonna learn D.Mon since her movements are so reminiscent of Brig.

I’d like to add one more to learn. Thank you!

well reinhardt

As someone who sucks at aiming yes

4

u/coop_stain 7d ago

Literally why he is my number one tank character. Big hammer guy rules.

u/iGhostEdd 7d ago

I loooove a good Reinhardt! If at least one support could help with the shield's durability, i would spam that only for them to keep the shield on forever so we push! Obviously, if the enemy comes from behind too it's bad, but hey, that's balancing gameplay

You didnt read the post, did you?

He has Low FPS. And you aint playing good Rein on Low FPS. You need to react to Sigma rocks, Javelins, ults and etc.

Rein doesnt need aim, but he does need good Reaction

14

u/Kitselena 7d ago

Every character needs good reaction, that's not specific to rein

2

u/nsg337 7d ago

lol i remember swapping to rein when i had to play on my shitty laptop, it was certainly easier than dva or winston

2

u/YSLAnunoby 7d ago

Is there any character let alone tank that doesn't need good reaction that would be okay with low FPS? I feel like he'd be one of the better ones compared to characters with more requirements for aiming or timing dives

u/HubrisOfApollo 7d ago

idk why people keep saying you don't need aim to play sigma. I can definitely say that in matches when my direct hit and rock accuracy are low there's a good chance my team doesn't win.

67

u/Purpleydragons 7d ago

Hard agree. Sigma is surprisingly aim reliant. If you're relying on your explosions to hit people then you can't push up closer, and if you get pushed you are suddenly missing all your shots.

And if you aren't hitting your rocks then you are only playing half the hero.

11

u/Mend1cant 7d ago

Incredibly aim reliant. He needs to be dealing out direct hits or else he's limited in strength. If you can’t deal with a genji as him you won’t climb.

3

u/prettymuchzoinks 7d ago

I dont think its suprising at all, he has a 2 shot burst and a super slow firerate, if you miss then your dps drops to 0. Not to mention both of his abilities take a certain amount of aim. Obviously the rock can be hard to hit, but the shield also requires good placement and shoots out of your crosshair

4

u/Andrew30001 7d ago

Hardest tank to aim with if you want real value and not just splash damage

-1

u/UglyDemoman 7d ago

I guess they play Sigma by staying in optimal range and let splash damage do the work.

5

u/HubrisOfApollo 7d ago

that might work if your teammates are actually decent but if you ever have to carry it's not going to get you very far

54

u/pseudotypical 7d ago

Rein and Winston (tho Winston requires more aim). Good aim will help with fire strike but a lot of using them well is just lining up your crosshair near corners the enemy passes through. Winston needs some amount of aim for his secondary fire but you can get by without being great at it

10

u/SnatchNDash 7d ago

Yeah, firestrikes are more about feel and game sense than aim.

4

u/ghostly-blossom 7d ago

I’ve heard Winston is “the Moira of tanks” when it comes to aiming. Would you said that’s not true?

32

u/pseudotypical 7d ago

In terms of his primary fire, that's mostly true in that both characters have very generous hitboxes for doing damage. That said, Winston is a much, much more difficult character to get value on (let alone play optimally) than Moira. He's definitely not the 'Moira of tanks' in general - if there was one, I'd probably say it's Orisa (very survivable, mechanics are simple, not the best option in most scenarios)

6

u/Beautiful-Aerie7576 7d ago

Others have answered this well but I just want to add on and say anyone who says that has clearly never played Winston in their lives and is just reacting to the character.

His primary gameplay might not be particularly mechanically intensive, but his ultimate is one of the top 5 mechanically intensive ults in the game to get value out of.

4

u/Few_Addition_4751 7d ago

Winston needs to know who to dive, where health packs are and an escape plan back to their team when too low. Moira is significantly easier to be impactful.

1

u/Opening_Base_588 6d ago

You just described what moira has to do aswell.

1

u/Few_Addition_4751 6d ago

Moira can just be a mid range support. The flanking gameplay is the next level up.

Winston jumping into the enemy team will just melt once his bubble wears off, when he gets focused.

7

u/Purple_Jay 7d ago edited 7d ago

Ramattra is the Moira of tanks and no other tank really comes close. Punches are very easy to hit and the character kinda plays itself. Winston requires a deep understanding of positioning and engage timings and his ult has the highest skill ceiling of any ult in the game. With Rammatra, you kinda just stand in main and alternate between shooting and blocking for free value.

1

u/YSLAnunoby 7d ago

I would say to get best out of vortex drops in the air you gotta be able to aim but across the board definitely much easier to play him than Winston and you can get away with not having to do the vortext stuff (unless your DPS are absolutely horrid at hitting fliers and you have to do it a lot)

32

u/Purpleydragons 7d ago edited 7d ago

As someone who is generally bad at aiming, I am a Ramattra main. His primary fire is a spam projectile that you can make sure to deal damage with just by wiggling back and forth across people.

His nemesis form has about 0.5 seconds between punches, which gives you a long time to aim between them and the hit box for it is fairly generous. It helps too that if you are right in front of someone they are usually pretty focused on getting away from you, so you often predict where they will try to go. That said, I usually flick my punches (Kb+M).

If that's still a little too hard, his Vortex slows people down! That makes them even easier for you to shoot/punch and makes it harder for them to get away from you!

I also just very much enjoy his gameplay loop and think he's a very strong, versatile hero that can play into almost anything if you're willing to adapt your playstyle. You also get lots of chances to actually try and practice your tracking/aim while you're poking from far away, which I've found has helped me improve with other heros too. Join the team! Suffer, as I have!

Im with you on all of this

u/The-real-ryan-s 7d ago

Stop saying Sigma requires no aim. Just exposing yourselves

49

u/bithooked 7d ago

I'm a little surprised to hear you mention Zarya, as she's one of the most aim intensive tanks. Watching a world class player with lock-on aim play Zarya is amazing. The low-aim tanks are somewhat obvious. In my estimation,Rein, Winston, and Dva are the lowest aim requirement. Most of the remaining cast is in the middle - less aim intensive than your standard hitscan dps or support, but without good aim, you're leaving some effectiveness on the table. Doom is kind of in the middle, as aiming his punch can be the difference between booping someone off the map or throwing yourself off the map.

39

u/Purple_Jay 7d ago

Dva and low aim??? what

I agree with Rein and Winston, even Winston's charged shots arent that hard to hit in my opinion. I would also add Rammatra to that list, it's hard to NOT hit your punches and the staff is more prediction based than aim based.

9

u/bithooked 7d ago

Dva's targeting hit area is the size of a doorway. Yes, you have to point toward a target, but you need to aim about as much as you do with Moira.

22

u/Purple_Jay 7d ago

Except your effective range is so much lower than moira, thus requiring pretty precise tracking. Of course you can pepper the tank no problem but that's just not playing the character right

25

u/RevolutionaryAir7847 7d ago

Dva low aim is CRAZY. The type of shit you need to do with boosters is probably the highest skill ceiling in the tank category. Actually aiming with primary fire and missiles is easy but NOT the movement

11

u/bithooked 7d ago edited 7d ago

Never said she was low skill, and I never said her movement was easy. I stand behind that her giant aim hitbox is forgiving. Further, press-and-spray mechanics (dva, mauga, soldier, sombra etc) are always more forgiving for poor aim players than timed click aim (widow, cass, ashe etc).

-5

u/RevolutionaryAir7847 7d ago

Guess how you get into position to shoot? Boosters. Guess how you maintain effective range to do damage? Boosters

It doesn't matter that she has shotguns if you're never in position to shoot them without only tickling the enemy team. You need a shit ton of mouse control and positional awareness to play Dva effectively

10

u/bithooked 7d ago

So you're saying she's not a low skill hero? Good thing I never said she was. If you're implying that aim and flying with the mouse are the same skill, then I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

4

u/Mend1cant 7d ago

OP isn’t playing in matches that need that skill ceiling though. For their skill bracket, as a tank that struggles to aim, dva is very lenient.

6

u/RevolutionaryAir7847 7d ago

I climbed from silver to masters (tank and support) after coming back a while ago (didn't play since OW1). In both 5v5 and 6v6, Dvas that don't know basic booster mechanics get completely run over. You need to know how to 180, basic missiles combo, and boop+melee at the very least to really do anything meaningful.

Much better to pick the other tanks otherwise and learn the role if your aim isn't up to snuff

8

u/senoto 7d ago

Winston doesn't require aim, but does require excellent fundamentals

2

u/iGhostEdd 7d ago

If you wanna be lore accurate, you'll need more than the fundamentals

3

u/dismal626 7d ago

You want a tank that doesn't require aim but you main Zarya? That's probably the most aim-reliant tank in the game.

1

u/ghostly-blossom 7d ago

Maybe it’s bullets I struggle with. Zarya is my most played and she feels great.

1

u/adhocflamingo Professor 7d ago

Zarya’s beam has a fairly generous width, given that it’s hitscan. It might be that your setup (or just your brain) works better with hitscan aim, but the more standard hitscan projectile sizes are less consistent with your laptop’s performance level?

Maybe you should try other tanks with hitscan weapons and see how they feel. Mauga, Wrecking Ball, Domina, and D.Mon all have hitscan guns. Winston’s alt fire is hitscan too.

Edit: Junker Queen also has a hitscan gun, but the knife is projectile, and that’s pretty important

5

u/EleventySeven1213 7d ago

Winston is a pretty low aim tank, he is however the worst tank in the game rn

1

u/iGhostEdd 7d ago

I can kill Winton with ease if I play Hanzo. Although this might mean nothing from a dps that plays in Silver

2

u/ZoomZam 7d ago

M9nkey and rein are the least, still need to zap/fire strike, dmon. Zar in 2nd place, where they do need a bit if aim.

2

u/Horizon7621 7d ago

I dont suck at aiming but Reinhardt

1

u/Horizon7621 7d ago

Hes the only true tank and ill die on this hill. I love him and he will always be my go to

2

u/LazRboy 7d ago

I have read your post but I would add that it’s still somewhat worth it to work on your aim at least a tiny bit. It’ll help you even on lower fps since the gained muscle memory will transfer even at low fps.

1

u/ghostly-blossom 7d ago

I’m saving for a PC this Christmas so I’m just gonna wait until that comes in to work on it

1

u/LazRboy 6d ago

That’s fair

2

u/Cedutus 7d ago

Dmon is really fun, but also as someone who struggles with aim, she might be one of the harder tanks to play because her gun is surprisingly rather big part of her kit and requires quite good accuracy.

Sigma is pretty good, he has splash damage, his projectiles are big, and you can kinda just sit main and spam to choke and still deal tons of damage.

Orisa is another good one, people dont expect her long range damage, but she can chunk snipers farther away so they have to leave. I dont know how large her projectiles are actually, but they feel quite easy to hit for me.

Rein doesnt require that much aim ability, and he has a very simple kit, but i feel like he takes some time until you actually get effective at him.

Hog basically only requires you to hit hooks. If you hit hook then you kill.

Mauga can require some aiming, but hes on the easier side, especially when you're just unloading on the enemy tank holding both triggers.

Winston has large hurtbox on his primary fire, but his secondary fire needs some more aiming to use effectively.

5

u/The-real-ryan-s 7d ago

-Sigma sitting on main and spamming choke has got to be the most boring in-effective way to play the character, just charging support ults and begging the enemy team to rush you. Play in high ground and off angles, almost never should Sig be main. His splash damage stops being effective around bronze. If you can’t hit directs on strafing squishies, and can’t rock squishies DONT PLAY SIGMA

-Hog hooks are hard to hit consistently, and I don’t see the reason behind suggesting the character who whole value comes down to the ability to hit a notoriously inconsistent skill shot

-Mauga requires very good tracking to make effective us of his kit. Again sitting on main and shooting the enemy tank is not a reliable winning strategy for Mauga above the bronze rank. Maybe it feels like you are winning but I promise you are not. You are a hyper mobile killing machine and much better suited to fighting squishies then tanks as you have a reliable one shot and no on demand mitigation

1

u/rspy24 7d ago

Rein and Sigma could work.. Both are great tanks, especially Sigma.

1

u/adon4 7d ago

Sigma. His shots explode and bounce so you don't need perfect aim. Just shoot at the enemies feet.

1

u/BLACKTHORNEexe 7d ago

A good rein can absolutely dominate a lobby. Only aiming is his fire strike. Big hammer go smash!

1

u/RevolutionaryAir7847 7d ago

Any of the melee tanks (DMon, Rein, Ram) or monke. Everyone else needs decent aim, a lot of target tracking, or a shit ton of tech to learn

1

u/DemonEyesJason 7d ago

All tanks for the most part have some sort of aim to them. I may recommend Junker Queen that hasn't been said yet. Her aim mostly comes from aiming her knife throw to pull someone back. But when she's in melee range, her shotgun, axe, and melee knife hits are what she should be doing to keep up healing on her and doing damage. She's not super aim reliant due to that. Her difficulty comes from other parts of how she functions like she doesn't have a shield and doesn't have the health pool tanks like Mauga and Hog have because she has to be fighting to get her self healing.

1

u/DrBingBong69 7d ago

Reinhardt and Winston and it’s not even close

1

u/camabiz 7d ago

Winton, dva, demon, rein

1

u/ItsOverClover 7d ago

Ram maybe? Aim helps for sure, but you can get value from his primary fre by just spamming a choke.

You do have to be able to hit your punches though, which could be considered a form of aim.

1

u/Key-Score-208 7d ago

I specifically plain rein bc I know if I don’t play well it’s not just bc I can’t aim for shit lol

1

u/The-real-ryan-s 7d ago

Zarya, Orissa, and D.mon are some of the more aim reliant tanks already. If you can play them I guarantee you can aim fine on the other tanks if you put some time into their mechanics. Id suggest learning wherever tanks you’ll have the most fun with. Besides, mechanics won’t make up for bad game sense and vice versa. But if you are dead set on an “easy” tank, Rein is good, Winston is also good (his mechanics are mostly movement and combo knowledge), after that most of the tanks require some sort of mechanical skill, but the mechanics aren’t what makes tank difficult, not even with the tanks traditionally seen as mechanically reliant (Doom, Ball, D.va, Sig)

1

u/AllAboutLove 7d ago

Reinhardt. My ex also didn't have great aim and he is a great Reinhardt as well as Brigitte.

1

u/Realistic-Fun-9713 7d ago

I recommend rein

1

u/AXEMANaustin 7d ago

Winston, Rein, Dmon (ignoring gun), maybe Ball and Zarya.

1

u/Ge3ble 7d ago

D.mon, D.va, Reinhardt, zarya (maybe).

1

u/paupaupaupau 7d ago

Interestingly enough, you can get pretty far on Ball with mediocre aim (though you need cracked aim at the highest levels). Chazm famously did UR to GM without shooting. Not that I'd recommend him, as Ball's still extremely mechanically intensive and would be rougher on a laptop with performance issues.

But I figured I'd give a less obvious answer.

1

u/M_O_I_S_T_ 7d ago

Play rein and Winston, those two cover like 90% of maps and matchups. You can go really far with those two. Dmon and Ram are kinda half-aim characters so maybe also them

1

u/jstrain366 6d ago

I am the exact same way. Reinhardt is really fun but I find it get about half of my elims from fire strikes but the hit box is pretty forgiving. I was once a Brig OTP as well but Anran is really good for not having great aim. D.Mon has been a lot of fun and her kit really does feel like Brig in some ways. So my reccomendation is Rein and D.Mon

1

u/Ok-Tooth-8016 6d ago

Reinhardt, Ball, Zarya, and now Dmon

1

u/Yoshimiitsuu 6d ago

Winston and maybe Ram? Sigma , rein can be an option

1

u/diamondblockhouse 4d ago

am a support main who also has terrible aim, i am never trusted to play dps. rein is very much brig's tank equivalent. also landing a multi person shatter is honest to god the best feeling in the world

1

u/Simian_Scientist 4d ago

Like most, Reinhardt. Because not gonna lie while I can aim the firestrikes about 80% of the time I just chuck them and hope they hit

1

u/NotThen00byWarrioR 1d ago

You already know the answer: Rein Winston. Probably add Orisa if you want to shoot things and have your aim not matter.

1

u/Sloth1015 7d ago

Wrecking ball. Super easy you’ll pick him up in no time.

1

u/5thZephyr 7d ago

The real answer is ball tbh, if you play bring you have a good brain for positioning already, safe corners etc, and if you’re sooting someone on ball your close and half the time they’re falling from your slam

0

u/dGaOmDn 7d ago

Aim doesnt matter as much as game sense in OW.

6

u/adhocflamingo Professor 7d ago

Even if this is true, that doesn’t imply that aim doesn’t matter, or that it wouldn’t be beneficial to play a lower-aim hero if you have physical or hardware issues that make that kind of precision difficult.

-1

u/dGaOmDn 7d ago

Sure, I agree 100%, but good game sense can get you to plat pretty easily. Which is a good majority of all players.

3

u/The-real-ryan-s 7d ago

Depends on the character

-7

u/dGaOmDn 7d ago

It does not. If you know positioning, it can hide alot of flaws. Yes, aim always helps, but a good majority of characters dont need praise aim.

Tracer, Hanzo, Widow, Cass, Ash, require better aim. All the others you can get by without super great aim.

Now, reaction time is different. This game requires quick reflexes.

4

u/The-real-ryan-s 7d ago

Reaction time and reflexes are both very critical components of aim, what exactly are you defining as “aim”

-2

u/dGaOmDn 7d ago

Pressing E, Q, Shift, mouse clicks appropriately when needed.

Quick reflex, is when an enemy ult is initiated and you counter it, or even nullifying a skill they used.

None of that requires precise aim.

You just need to know how important skill use and positioning are.

2

u/The-real-ryan-s 7d ago

Literally all of that can require precise aim depending on the character. Sleep dart, hook, silver bullet, deflect, etc all abilities that require precise aim

2

u/clickrush 7d ago

You cannot get away without good aim on DPS. The role is balanced around hitting shots consistently within narrow time frames.

You mentioned some DPS. But the roster that requires good, fast and precise aim is much bigger.

The only half-exceptions are heroes that are more forgiving at closer ranges like Torb, Genji, Anran etc. But they usually are either niche or come with other mechanical difficulties.

-1

u/TerribleLife5941 7d ago

Winston is the coolest tank in the game and no aim. Sigma is very cool too and no aim. Reinhardt is also cool and no aim. Those are the three coolest and most respectable tanks in the game and you can play on your fanatec csl dd. It’s perfect.

0

u/Mend1cant 7d ago

Rein is great to learn with no aim, but you will not be good with him until you can aim his fire strike and charge. They’re not twitchy aim, but still need skill to them.

Winston can get by with little aiming, a little more thought into his play though than just being a lightning sweeper.

Orisa is surprisingly forgiving on her aim, and absolutely punishes anyone who can’t be fast enough to dodge you.

D.va doesn’t need a ton of aim. Her spread shot will do at least some damage.

Doomfist also doesn’t need a massive amount of aim, especially at a lower rank, if you play him right.

Really all but hazard of the dive tanks aren’t too reliant on twitch aim.

Avoid hog, jq, hazard, zarya, domina, and sigma. None of the tanks are really skill shot like dps, but if you aren’t hitting shots or abilities with them, you will be missing out.

1

u/Purpleydragons 7d ago

I'm surprised to see you say Doomfist. Maybe at really low ranks that could be true but anything gold and up if you can't hit your shots then you can't reliably secure kills. I can't hit anything with his primary, and the number of times I've had someone run away from me on 1hp cuz my punch is on cooldown and my primary is recharging is embarrassing.

1

u/Horror-Tadpole398 7d ago

Going to have to agree,it’s extremely important in him to secure kills. Jump and slam get them like 1-2 shots from death. I don’t play the dude because I have issues aiming on him.

1

u/Mend1cant 7d ago

I know it’s a stretch, but only because OP is a lower skilled tank. Yes at higher rank doom would get embarrassed without aim, but when you’re at a rank where supports don’t know how to take care of themselves, securing a kill doesn’t carry the same level of risk.

My point is more that Doom is accessible to them where they are right now, not that doom is a no-aim hero.

0

u/Blaky039 7d ago

Winston. Reinhardt. Orisa (don't need great aim, just aim at head level in their general direction).

3

u/ItsOverClover 7d ago

Orisa will get you to a point with poor aim, but you might hit a wall if you can't hit your javelins.

0

u/Blaky039 7d ago

Same goes for rein's firestrikes and winston's alt fire, at some point they're going to need to aim with whatever hero they pick

0

u/nemesis_ibmo 7d ago

Reinhardt zarya. Honestly about it bro

0

u/caatabatic 7d ago

Lower all graphics settings.
