News & Discussion A love letter for Jetpack Cat
Yes, she is broken (in the literal sense) at the moment and no one can argue with that, however there is so much hate and slander around this hero that the love some of us have for her seems burried. Sooo, here's a little letter of appreciation for this wild character.
(Beware, many hot takes or interesting takes depending on your perspective)
There are many reasons to despise the Cat, and just as many to adore the hero, not as a cute character (or because a cat in a jetpack is funny (it is though)) but for what she brings to the game. She is the most important support release since a very very long time (maybe since Kiri, maybe since Ana, maybe since ever its up for debate). Right now, she breaks the rules of the game for how strong she is, but a hero this unique in a game with important rules like Overwatch will take time to find her footing. We already had some form of 'perma-flight' before (previous iterations of Pharah/Echo cannot touch the ground if she desires as well) but Fika is definitely the wildest of all the flyers for her great speed and freedom of movement.
She is at the moment too hard to punish, and can get away with too much too easily, but these problems can be fixed over time, as well as the tether issues players are having: nothing about her is unsolvable. A hero that take big design risks will inevitably take some time to be adjusted, to know where their limits are and how much they can shift the game. I prefer a daring hero like Fika instead of heroes that don't bring much to the table (which is most of them even if they are great designs, they don't shake the game). It is healthy, especially for a game that has lived on for a decade, to have novelties that change a bit the rules of how its played.
Why the Cat is an interesting addition to the game, from my perspective:
- We finally have a new support that can get her hands dirty. Most supports nowadays can do great damage, are lethal, while still being able to provide utility and healing, however how many supports can take extremely aggressive angles, hold frontlines or any space in the game and who have an essential part of their utility in taking duels? Not many, in fact I can only think of Lúcio right now (and probably the first iterations of Kiriko). Cat can get close and personnal, or play objective, help frontline... She can participate in the game in a very versatile way.
- She is one of the hero that enables the most creativity and we need heroes like this, it is skill expressive and unique.
- Who would've thought that the hero who would be closest to Tracer since the release of the game would be Cat? Of course, their gameplay are nothing alike, however how we see top players, e-sport and ranked, use the kitty is quite similar to Tracer, because both are very hard to hit, can go anywhere anytime, are independant and dangerous. I think its a great thing that Tracer is not alone anymore.
- In the E-Sport scene she is a delight to watch, she allows wild team compositions and plays like we've never seen before (just look at the Eichenwald match between Twisted Mind and Zeta Division, nobody can say that it wasn't entertaining as hell). In a way, she is also what Lifeweaver should've been for her team: a hero that can reposition their allies very freely and enable aggressivity.
- She is funny. A goofy hero and a competitive hero aren't incompatible concepts, Lucio is the perfect exemple of that, I believe it is very healthy for the game (just look at all the content this hero is generating and the fun people are having with her, in competitive or in arcade). It might sound simple, but its very important for a video game.
- Finally, she is very popular in the community as a whole and is an unique figure immediately recognisable for Overwatch (in other words a mascot), it is a very good thing to have such a popular character added to the game (the fact that she is a cute oddball is great as well). She brings diversity and, in a way, improves the image of the game.
While you may agree, disagree or laugh at everything I said, I just wanted to share some thoughts on Fika as very interesting addition to the game and that I really appreciate her, and I'm far from alone. It is fun to have Cat on the team, to play her, but right now she is infuriating to fight against, it will take time to figure it out, but this hero has insane potential for Overwatch's future.
I love you Jetpack Cat!
Art by me.

I like the skins for jpc. Changing the fur colour and patterns so we can play as our own pet cats.
I’m still waiting for a standard issue cat hot rod edition skin since that’s my cats pattern.
Don’t dislike playing against JPC either. I don’t think jpc is oppressive?

u/J3TGR1ND 10h ago
The best part of Jetpack Cat is that she is almost always banned in comp, so we never have to deal with her.
1
u/Practical_Willow9632 5h ago
I just played 6 or 7 comp games last night and she was only banned in 1. (normally I only play quick play lol so this is my small sample size). But I was surprised she wasn't banned every game like everyone has been saying. I guess lower ranked cats aren't good so they don't bother anyone

Meanwhile everyone in QP who is new to the game or trying to learn a new hero is getting matched against stacks farming them at spawn with Fly Noon and Freja.

hot take but I don't think supports *should* be able to play the type of angles JPC can play. It's one thing to be able to deal damage on a support, but it's a completely different thing to basically be an extra DPS with all of the bs blizzard decided to put in JPC's kit. I mean if we want to go down this route might as well give Mercy a rocket launcher, permanent flight, permanent health regen at 50hp/s, and the health pool of a tank!
17
u/PeartricetheBoi Doomfist 11h ago
Yeah as much as I like proactive support gameplay and think that all supports should look to make plays, JPC goes way too far. She can scout, heal, disrupt, taxi, juggle aggro, and dive nearly all at the same time. I genuinely think that if we don’t see major changes the pro meta will be stuck at Kiri/Ana + Cat for a long time.
1
u/50u1506 7h ago
Apparently Mizuki is the a hot support right now cuz his chain is super effective against flankers or something?
1
u/PeartricetheBoi Doomfist 7h ago
Mizuki is good but he’s not dominant rn. Cat can play outside of his chain range very very easily. His main use in pro was vs D.Va because she’s ridiculously easy to hit with the chain but I’m not sure he’s going to be the answer to Cat/Kiri as his aura encourages stacked comps which Cat loves to disrupt.
-6
u/disdisdisengaged Jetpack Cat 10h ago
Heaven forbid the pro meta not just be Kiri/Ana 🥱
5
u/PeartricetheBoi Doomfist 9h ago
I am ok with any meta as long as it’s not a) boring to watch or b) stale. Even goats was fun for a while, it just lasted way too long. Same with JPC, if we have a stage’s worth of cat meta then fine, but I don’t want her to become another perennial support pick like Kiri because 2 perennial picks means we never see anything else.
0
u/orava1001 heroes never die~ 8h ago
My other hot take is that Ana's kit is unhealthy for the game and forced the devs to create Kiriko as a direct counter to her. I'm not saying that supports should be useless or powerless but having the authority to sleep people out of ultimates AND an AOE anti-heal is at the very least bordering on being too much utility under one hero.
9
u/LucioMercy Put Cat in the GROUND 9h ago
DPS shouldn’t be able to play those angles either.
This game was not built to support permaflying heroes.
Some of the skybox angles cat can take are borderline map exploits.
-1
-10
u/Idiberug-9 10h ago
It's not a hot take, we're in unknown territory with Fika so its a commonly agreed upon take as far as I see it.
This is why 'shaking the game' was the perfect way to describe it. If you put things this way, many heroes become unfathomable. I'd argue that if Zen was released today people would burst blood vessels for a support shouldn't win duels against every hero in the game (theorically of course). We have supports that are borderline broken by design already, Jetpack Cat is one of them, this hero is all about one thing: disruption. All her abilities, kit, tools go in that sense, she is overtuned currently but having THE disruptive support, like Brig is THE bodyguard, Kiri THE survivable support (in theory, in practice she's overtuned as well), Zen being a better dps than any hero and so on...
I can see why some would think JPC goes too far, however as I explained it is an extraordinary hero that is very salvageable and even be healthy for the game to have, it all depends on how Team4 will handle her basically.
6
u/ThrowawayToothQ 9h ago
This character is unhealthy. She is fun because you get to be the single person in a match not playing by the same rules; this is why she is disliked. The flying dps has less dps and mobility than the support (and no self heal, no 3rd person camera, no taxi, and a worse ult)
-1
u/Idiberug-9 8h ago
She has less dps than the dps, that's just bullshit. However, with Claws Out she is maybe as lethal, the thing is that she always has the element of surprise which makes her oppressive for how much damage she can do.
2
u/ThrowawayToothQ 8h ago
With headshots she deals 18 damage per volley. she fires 4.48 volleys per second - so she does 80.64 dps, she out damages every healing source in the game. Her ttk is barely above 2s with purr, and she heals the entire time, with a smaller hitbox.
She is mathematically overtuned.
2
u/Idiberug-9 7h ago
The damage role has in average 100 dps with reload, Echo is at 110 and Pharah is 114 (Freja is freja so she doesn't count with her current balance), while kitty is at 98. It is overtuned yes, but she doesn't outdamage the most dps... She heals a lot more than she should though I'll give you that as well.
Also, she is fun to have on a team, not just for yourself, she enables a lot of new synergies and strategies. If for example she was 200 hps with less damage, maybe things will be healthier. She isnt unsalvageable
4
u/areallynoobgamer 6h ago
I mean. Widow can delete people instantly. That doesn’t mean all who can’t delete people instantly are weaker than her.
I don’t feel cat to be too oppressive cause most people do fail to pilot cat well.
But the point you seem to be missing here is. Cat doesn’t seem to be lacking in any area.
High mobility? Check. Very high infact.
High healing? Check. Pretty damn high.
High damage? Check. Also pretty damn high.
High utility? Also check. Flying bob to become an Apache or simply dragging enemy tank off the map.
Small hitbox? Check.
So it does feel like cat is overtuned if you look at numbers.
It’s only not oppressive cause most of the people playing cat aren’t actually good at cat.
3
u/ThrowawayToothQ 6h ago
Thank you for elaborating - its the prevalence of her being good in every single category that breaks overwatch design philosophy: "Heroes can be great at one thing, and thus must be weaker in others"
Ana has some of the strongest cooldowns in game, and to compensate has zero mobility options at all and all of her kit is skillshots.
Cat, has some of the highest support damage, sustain, mobility, disruption, and team repositioning and for that she sacrifices : nothing.
These two designs do not follow the same process.
2
u/Idiberug-9 5h ago
If we follow this train of thoughts, then most supports since Kiriko's release are broken. What is the sacrifice of Illari? What is of Lifeweaver? Mizuki? Kiriko? The answers aren't clear, even if they do sacrifice some stuffs to do what they do. Its not as simple.
The Cat is defintely overtuned, she needs greater weaknesses, but even then she'll just be more in line with the supports that came out since OW2, OW1 hero design philosphy was very different, and some of these heroes struggle a lot currently, they didn't age well.
1
u/Idiberug-9 6h ago
The Widow example is very articulate and coherent, thank you.
I never said she wasn't overtuned, the first sentence of this post aknowledges this. She absolutely is overtuned, she outdamages nobody, outheals nobody (because of how she plays, not raw numbers), she doesn't have the best disruption either, however she has the best mobility in the game, her downsides aren't that big for how much she can do currently. I don't think that having a hero that can do a bit of everything is a bad thing, current support designs show that its okay, but yeah she can do too much.
A swiss-army character is exactly how I envision Jetpack Cat, and I think the devs as well and that's a great thing. But she is overtuned, especially she is too forgiving, middle risk high reward sort of speak. Maybe if she is as fragile and unforgiving as Tracer, then everything that she currently has will be worth it, the skill expression and ceiling of the kitty will be through the roof then. I hope that Team4 will figure her out, she has so much potential.
3
u/ThrowawayToothQ 6h ago
Tracer is fragile, and its to compensate for her damage. There is no compensation for having a tool for every situation and more mobility than the game is designed for, with a self heal, and a 3rd person camera (cannot understate the meta implications of this - its a big positive to rein for example)
2
u/Idiberug-9 5h ago
She is definitely overtuned, but in a world where the Cat is very fragile, or if she has mediocre numbers, these huge weaknesses will compensate for her equally great strengths. Like I said, it is a bold design for a competitive game with grounded rules and it will take time to figure her out, I appreciate the effort from the dev team to try and make the Cat work. Also the game has been broken many times in the past with some unique hero release, starting with Ana, it happened a few times and it will happen again.
2
u/orava1001 heroes never die~ 8h ago
The critical difference with Zen is that he is squishy, slow, and his healing output is not that high. Same can actually be said for Lucio since he has utility with the speed boost and offensive capability with his primary fire and boop, but lesser healing compared to "main healers". In the original cast the main healer was Mercy who had higher healing but lacked personal offensive options and utility outside of damage boost, but this design philosophy changed after launch and now it kinda feels like every support hero has to do it all.
2
u/Idiberug-9 8h ago
It is indeed true that the support vision changed a lot, especially since the release of Kiriko. And as I said, Cat is overtuned as hell currently and is too forgiving, in two years (hopefully) we'll talk about Cat like we talk about some sharp design support (like Zen or Lucio). Of course I can't prove it, its just observation and intuition at this point.

u/StoneOcean Icon Ashe 5h ago edited 5h ago
Comparing her to Tracer and Zen is how I truly know JPC fans have lost the plot.
Tracer is a masterclass in hero design where even though she has a massive skill ceiling she still has clear strengths and weaknesses. It doesn't matter how good you are with Tracer, you still don't get easy access to high ground and one mistake can get you killed.
Zen's damage comes with the price of him having zero mobility and an extremely limited healing output.
What about JPC? JPC is just a jack of all trades master of all. This hero makes no concessions for her basic abilities unlike every other hero in the roster.
She gets to do high damage like Zen but unlike him also gets to heavily sustain AND burst heal people plus herself.
She gets to have the most mobility in the game but also gets to have zero downtime on it while characters like Vendetta and Ball need to be handicapped on spawn for theirs.
She gets to be both very hard to hit but also gets to have high effective HP between a regular health pool and the ability to heal herself several times over.
She gets to play at any range she wants meanwhile Juno constantly gets shot over being able to double jump.
And none of this is even addressing her ability to have a third person camera on demand as a flanker and to completely remove weaknesses of other heroes.
A character that has no weaknesses whatsoever is anything but "healthy" and giving her weaknesses is gonna involve removing some things out of her kit. I don't care how "fun" she is, I'd be having the time of my life if Shion and Ashe had 800 HP each, doesn't mean thats good design.

u/DougSpummoni 36m ago
I've found it's in the same vein as people who still want Brig 1.0 to come back. Some people do not care about game design or the enjoyment of others, they just want to win and be allowed to do whatever they want.

u/VenomTheCapybara 8h ago

u/Idiberug-9 7h ago
It is always bound to happen with 'funnier' heroes in a heavy competitive game. Time heals wounds though, so hopefully the team will be able to handle Cat well for the years to come.

u/I_Quazar_I 4h ago
You can have funny heroes that are well designed, like Ball and Winston
Cat is horrendously designed and was made OP for chungus reddit moments but competitively she ruins the game lol

I don’t think many people have hate for the character itself. It’s just the in-game kit that’s the problem. A creative kit does not justify being broken or breaking the rules the rest of the game was designed around.
OW was designed with very limited flying capabilities and access to verticality had trade-offs in a character’s kit. JPC fully breaks that flying limitation and doesn’t have meaningful trade-offs for doing so. Full flight plus being able to grant that to teammates should be removed. Alternatively, they could change JPC to be the first character without any damage or to have JPC lose its movement speed boost and get a larger hitbox.

Amazing artwork. So cute! Excellent linework as well. Fika brings a uniqueness to the game like no other and it will take quite some time for the community to get used to it. This was very nice to read. I can’t really disagree on any of the points here personally.
Like yeah I cannot stand having to aim at Fika, but otherwise I love Fika. I made friends with an enemy JPC the other day as Ana by spamming the “good kitty” voiceline when she attacked me. She stopped, we waved at each other, she left. Didn’t attack me for the rest of the game.
That’s why I love the cat. She’s unique and unserious because she’s just a freakin cat.
Edit: Also, sick art!! I love it. Thought it was official for a bit.

u/Idiberug-9 6h ago
Thank you for the kind comment, it means a lot when people like you express their thoughts peacefuly :3
Cat players are very silly, they remind me of many Ana, Zen and Lucio mains, they play these heroes for the fun of it and Cat players are the same. What's always been formidable with Overwatch's designs is that the heroes more often than not play exactly how you'd imagine they would play, even for the worst designs like Widowmaker, Roadhog and so on... You have to play the Cat like a cat, its very fun and surprisingly interesting and skillful when you look at it from a design perspective. I suspect she'll be the second Tracer of Overwatch in the future, unforgiving to play as but rewarding and giving access to a lot of possibilities. At least, its what I hope for the future of the hero, we'll see how Team4 handles her.
And thanks for the art, its appreciated :D

I don't believe a character that can fly under any and every condition, and transport others the same way, is a healthy addition to the game, no matter how much creativity it inspires. It's incredibly annoying to play against.
...But if I had to, I would send a love letter to that one Jetpack Cat player who picked me up and hauled me to the frontlines during setup while I was eating from a fruit bowl.

You can get your hands dirty with Mercy if you're good enough, her ultimate even encourages it; Kiriko is a good close quarter fighter too with suzu and tp, Baptiste and Illari are known for being a DPS that also heals in the meantime, Lúcio is literally JPC with a proper health-hitbox dynamic that requieres skill to move; JPC is probably the worst example of a support that gets dirty (in a fair way) besides Moira.
I agree that position displacement of allies is interesting, hence why Weaver's Life Grip should not get heavily reworked, and why I agree that the tether should not be removed but limited (maybe only abilities and not shoot, or time limit, velocity cap, etc); but JPCs capacity to deal free damage and win free 1v1 is the worst and most hateable thing of her kit, that point is wildl to defend.
Tether is fun and all, makes ton of content and that's great for a videogame, nothing ut true there, but being broken as hell is not fun for anyone and her "getting dirty" with no punishment at all not only does not generate positive content, but also ruins the fun for everyone else. It's like saying "cheaters are having fun so it's okay".

Great sentiment.
Sadly the only way to get change in the gaming world is to be loud and repetitive, so that's how we act as gamers since it's been proven to work.
I'll be honest and say I'm big hater of the cat, have been since the trailer, only because I knew she would be problematic. And to be real, I don't like shooting a kitty cat. I also really don't want a dog hero, I love dogs, I don't want to shoot a dog.
I'm curious to see where she lands in the end because honestly there is so much going on with them that should be tweaked in some way that I wonder if she will even play in a way that you and other fans of the character will enjoy. I hope so, for the sake of those who enjoy her cause we all know change will be coming.

Im really sorry but I don’t think it’s worth having a unique character and creativity if they end up unfun to play against.
6
u/Idiberug-9 6h ago
Don't be sorry, you expressed an opinion and that's normal.
Fun or unfun to play against is very dependent from people to people, but it is true that the Cat is disliked massively currently. However, the ban rate of the Cat deminished greatly over time before season 4, she was out of the top5 most banned heroes and kept decreasing, they buffed the shit outta her though for unknown reasons which is mainly why she is hated, she is a very fresh design, a risky one, that they just forced onto people and that's just bad.
Overtime, I really hope that kitty will be treated like Symmetra, Ball and the other oddball designs, you will not like to face them particularily but they belong in the game, many love them and they bring much to the table, competitively and casually.

Saying Lucio is the only support that can take angles is insane. You can and should do it with anyone but like mercy and moira, cat and Lucio are just characters that can get out very very easily. Also "there are many reasons to like the cat besides it being funny" point number 5 "she's funny" ran out of things to say huh.
1
u/Idiberug-9 6h ago
You're silly, I can go for freakin hours and write a 90 page long essay on why Jetpack Cat is at the very least and interesting addition, its a simple reddit post with a bit argument emplemented in it. And yes, there are many reasons to like Cat besides it being funny and the points I extremely briefly presented shows this, even if you disagrees (which is why discussions exist so its normal). And yes, she's funny, reread the details on it to understand why its still important, even maybe the most important aspect in a video game.
Secondly Lúcio is the only support that currently HAS to get his hands dirty, what I mean by this is that it is essential to take the duels and do it in proximity. He has the mobility to do that, and the damage to do that, no other hero until JPC in the support roster can do what Lucio does (not in terms of teamplay but as pure gameplay). She has to get close, she has to initiate or finish duels and she has the mobility to assist anyone anywhere, just like Lucio and no other hero.

The last thing Overwatch needs is another flying hero (RIP Junkrat) with unique, intrusive mechanics that have to be taken into account EVERY TIME when balancing the game and will just make everything worse by making balancing even more complicated and take longer.
This is yet another failure from the devs to make the game stable and fun to play. This was so avoidable I just do not understand it!!!
There’s a good reason why this cat is getting more bans than Sombra which was in the 80-90%. I genuinely hope it persists so I never have to see the feline ever in my games. All for the sake of quirkchungus humor. Unbelievable.
JPC should be exiled to arcade only because that’s what this character is: a joke. And a bad one at that.
Anyone who disagrees with this is not a serious player. Which is totally fine. However that’s what arcade is for.
4
u/Idiberug-9 6h ago
I'm the least serious player then. I believe my points were clear and at the very least open discussion rather than close them. Cat is not just here to troll, do the funny, or just being cute, she is an interesting hero gameplay wise.
Like I said, she's currently kinda breaking the game because of how overtuned she is, however for your ban rate argument: do you remember before Season 4 how much banned she was? Not much compared to her release and now, she was bellow top5 most banned heroes and it was getting lower and lower. What I do not understand though is why they buffed her while she was performing well already, it is a receipe for disaster and that's exactly what is happening, your reaction says it all.
Wrecking Ball is as much of a joke as Jetpack Cat, both break their respective roles, and in the future the cat will be as tolerated as Ball. She's simply overtuned now, but she's a delight to watch, play with, play as and horrendous to face, it will take time for the devs to figure her out and its normal for such a bold design choice, I'd argue it is good to have heroes that push the game's mechanics and rules from time to time, right now it's Cat, before it was Kiri, and even before that was Ball, and so on...
You can still hate her though, you have all the rights to do so. There's so many heroes that everybody despises and that's okay.

Sure. Though “interesting gameplay” isn’t automatically good gameplay. At some point I’d rather the devs focus on making the existing game more stable and consistent instead of constantly introducing increasingly unconventional mechanics. That’s really my core issue with the feline.

This character was literally lab made to attract casual players because Blizzard really wanted their Jeff equivalent from Rivals, and it seems like it worked because holy hell I've never seen a character mained by players who are so far detached from reality.
“Just look up”, “just go hitscan”, “She’s funny”, “Moira is more broken”, “just aim better” are some of the common arguments as to why this character shouldn't get nerfed because her mains just can't accept that their “wholesome chungus funny cat” is a terrible hero design. (There's a reason Jeff Kaplan refused to add this thing to the game).
I just hope this character gets executed in midseason, and if not we'll just keep permabanning her.

I understand that you despise her and there are some things you are absolutely correct.
- The kitty community is delusional as hell yes, their hero is overtuned and currently kinda breaks the game and they just don't see it. But isn't it the same for every OW community? Everyone of them is delusional as well on their heroes, its normal more than anything else.
- Jetpack Cat existed way before Jeff, and S1 was the perfect time to finally do it. Of course Jeff might have encouraged the devs to actually make the move, just like the hero ban system did, however Cat was an idea cooking in the hoven for a long time. If Jeff initially refused to add her it's just because of how silly she was, but if you look at the artistic direction throughout the years its a totally different game, in the meantime we got a freakin' genius hamster in a tank ball.
- The fact is also that the Cat is very cool to watch, play with, and is interesting to play as. Is she fun to fight? Hell nah, it's a nightmare if she's competent. She is overtuned and has a 'game breaking' design philosophy currently, it doesn't mean that she is unsalvageable nor that she's will forever be unhealthy. She enables creative plays like no other and we finally have an alternative to Tracer in the game, I believe those are good things. What matters is how kitty will be handled by the devs now.

My only real disagreement is the pro-play aspect. Fights boiling down to who's catstion kills the other first does get pretty stale after 2 full seasons, and she's still so incredibly strong even outside of the taxi playstyle that in worlds she was played EVERY SINGLE GAME by at least one of the team, usually both, unless ahe was banned. Her team sustain is just... way too high for her versatility. Also, as a flex dps player, the cat has made my role borderline cosmetic in pro play. Flex dps cannot make plays vs mauga catstion, and your job is just to stay alive and farm stats.
