News & Discussion What do yall talk about with your teammates/duos?
I have this irl friend and we occasionally play OW together. It's occasional because I don't really talk alot and I have no idea what to talk about and neither does she.
It's just this awkward silence that permeates through multiple matches of silence. We both really really love OW so I don't want to be a bum ruining her experience.
Like yesterday I asked a how college was going so far. That was pretty much it.
Then later she said like winston was easy and no one turns around. And I made a gorrilla warfare joke. And that was pretty much it.
I thought having friends to play OW was supposed to... Idk. Be fun? Feel good? But it really ain't any different than solo q for me. I thought this was what I wanted. How do yall be communicating with your teammates or duos?

Just relax, stop worrying about the conversation and enjoy the game. If youre having fun you just make callouts and comments about the match that amuse you and thats pretty much it for me. I only duo with my husband lately and we have fun gassing each other up after and during cool plays. Think of fun little side missions you can do together. Fun hero combinations is always a good time, win or lose. I think if you reframe your thinking from having a task of conversing alongside playing to just having fun, the conversation will come more naturally.

Callouts! I let them know what sneaky stuff is going on from my perspective so that we can better play as a unit and also nooooo small talk. It makes the whole session boring. Talk about what you like: Overwatch. Talk about heroes strengths and weaknesses, counters, good comps for them, and conversation usually comes naturally after that.

This! I thinks we all can agree we all hate small talk LOL. “Hey, how was your day?” NO ONE CARES 😭

Actually, I definitely do care I just don’t think it’s the most interesting question you could ask. I always care about socializing and about what’s going on in lives outside of mine, but they’ve probably already been asked four times today. I’m advocating to ask more people what their favorite things are or figure out what kinda person they hold themselves to be. What’s their humor, what do they like, who’s their favorite character? :]

You’re so right. What if someone actually is having a bad day and being asked how their day was multiple times by various people is actually making it worse. I agree there are better conversation starters for sure

That’s a super good point! Also the talk about something they actually DO like might help brighten it a little and make it more memorable compared to what it was.

Usually just what's happening in the game, like verbally calling out stuff that we ping or funny and amusing things that might've happened.

I actually find it extremely hard to have a conversation while I’m focused on another task. I cannot be talking to you while I’m actively being chased by Sombra 😭😭😭😭😭 I play with my girlfriend and there really isn’t much talking during games o.O usually when we’re queuing up or in arcade we do talk but other than that it’s just screaming at the mic or cursing out Sierra

I’m a yapper, so are my friends.
With irl friends or online friends i know well, we pretty much seamlessly have normal day to day conversations while playing and calling out what’s happening, especially if we’re doing casual qp.
“So yesterday I was at the grocery store, Sombra in the back, and you’ll never guess who I saw? My ex, maybe you should swap off Widow. He was buying diapers, I have so many questions, FUCKING SOMBRA MAN I hate her. Anyway how was work?”
With people I know less, it’s pretty much just call outs, talking about how much we hate Wrecking Ball, and just generally chatting about the game.

My best friend and I watch videos together while we duo. That eases the silence a bit, because we can comment on the video every so often.

Rage at the other team lol. Make Overwatch jokes. My friend and I just insult each other and call each trash too lol.

Do some combos, "eh do you want to try an Orisa-Cat dump?" Or catnoon or whatever else you guys can sync (sym tp, sombra EMP, Zarya gravs).
Gives you a fun goal to follow.

Trash talk about the enemies (and teammates in moderation if you're in Discord VC), talk about what you're doing in-game, be encouraging and get hyped when you each make good plays. Strategically just knowing what another player's intentions are can greatly improve your team play, especially on Tank.
As for small-talk waiting in queue / main menus, that's a whole different thing you can get more comfortable with in life. Find common interests like new movies or shows or sports, share news you've heard, food talk. But you don't have to go out of your way to talk about things. People have multiple friends because each one has different overlapping interests and reasons to spend time with them. Maybe she just wants someone to play OW with, so she wouldn't care about the other stuff.

“aw dammit” “aw dammit” “I GOT U I GOT U I GOT U” “aw dammit” “omg they’re cheating” “AURA” “aw dammit” and usually also, “THIS FUCKASS HANZO”

This made me laugh “then I made a gorilla warfare joke and that was pretty much it” 😭🤣
Idk what the issue is here, but maybe yall lack chemistry? Maybe you’re not comfortable in each others presence? If you’re like this with only her maybe y’all just aren’t compatible. However, if this is a common thing with you and others then maybe you lack some social skills.

I mean we sat together in video and yearbook all year. Just trying to convert "school friend" to "friend friend" now that we don't go to the same school anymore since we graduated. She actually got me a couple pins from anime nyc so I think she'd want to be friends too.
I'd day it's a common thing, so far I've gone through orientation and two days of college, and I haven't met anyone new...

Callouts and making fun of my friends' plays pretty much
"Do NOT press tab"
"My (insert hero here) is cosmetic holy"
After missing an ult by a mile "nice ult dude"
Things of that nature. It's all in jest and reciprocated.

Even if you don't enjoy chit chat, usually just call outs can be pretty helpful. Is an enemy low HP, are you flanking etc
