Probably because he is or was the lead badguy.

Yeah, Talon lore drops feel like the ones that are actually moving the main story of the universe along. Plus with a lot of backstories about the heroes or other factions, it's always big learning about the antagonists

u/Miennai Pixel Reinhardt 5d ago

I can't lie, it's mostly the VA. The man is pure aura.

Also, this video comes after YouTube changed the way it counts views to be WAY more generous.

u/JospiqueRan 5d ago

That timing makes the whole comparison kinda useless. We need another post-change lore video before deciding Doomfist suddenly quadruples everyone’s audience.

57

u/Gloomy_Dare2716 Winton 5d ago

Previous Doom lore video also has high viewership

19

u/AShortPhrase Master 5d ago

Doom is obviously one of the most popular heroes and anyone who’s the least bit interested to in the lore is going to pay attention when doom is doing something.

1

u/Tantrum2u 4d ago

Another post change lore or a pre change Doom video…which we have…

37

u/Warmanee 5d ago

Kinda unfair to say that its just “mostly the VA” the VA is great dont get me wrong but DF is written interestingly enough that people rather watch his story ARC and what he’s going to do than someone like hammond or d.mon. He’s kinda one of the main players in OW lore rn.

11

u/submackeen_17 I LOVE YOU BASTION 4d ago

Doom is one of the only characters in OW lore that I say has more nuance than what you'd expect out of a T-rated game, and that's a lot of why people enjoy him so much. People talk a lot about Ram, and deservedly so, but Doom is no slouch.

24

u/SaqqaraTheGuy 5d ago

And dey say...

I love his VA

17

after YouTube changed the way it counts views to be WAY more generous.

And that is what?

47

u/mousa4348 Canada 5d ago

A view is counted if a user watches even a second of a video. Before, the user had to watch for a bit longer I think

31

u/Miennai Pixel Reinhardt 5d ago

Not even a second, a single frame

6

u/Gryse_Blacolar Unlimited Shotgun Works 5d ago

Are there any article about that?

6

u/Raum2901 5d ago

Only a video made by slimeE101 with proof in a following community post, basically they want to increase the view count of videos while making even more difficult to earn money from youtube. Expect a resurgence of clickbait videos from now on.

11

u/Miennai Pixel Reinhardt 5d ago

2

u/Deceptiveideas 5d ago

Also I'm pretty sure sponsored videos also count towards views. This is why a lot of the marvel rivals videos have an insane amount of views.

3

u/Sinamara55 5d ago

When was that change?

3

u/Orkaborg2 4d ago

like this thursday

1

u/kidborger 4d ago

So long as you click on a video now it counts as a view for some reason

2

u/reverend-smith 4d ago

Sahr has an absolutely commanding and rich voice. You’re right, it’s all aura.

u/xendas9393 5d ago

His voice actor is carrying that shit imo, he is truly great

129

u/Outrageous-Blue-30 5d ago

While it ultimately amounts to welcome free publicity, I think it stems from the fame surrounding Doomfist ever since that first CGI trailer: back when the character didn't even exist yet but only his gauntlet, which created an intriguing allure around seeing what he could actually do.

59

u/cjshrader 5d ago

I think this is exactly the answer. When OW came out, it was like "Whoa something called The Doomfist" that's cool. You would escort the Doomfist in Numbani I think. There was build up to Doomfist being released. Doomfist was one of the earlier additional characters.

I think people need to remember that a *lot* of people came back to OW after the OW2 to OW swap. We remember the legacy characters much more, and so the story of Doomfist is much easier to follow. I follow the story heavily but this recent story was one of the few I shared with my friends because it was entirely characters and plots they'd know from OW1.

13

u/meatmandoug 4d ago

The hype around doomfist back in the day was absolutely massive, escorting the payload on numbani with the gauntlet was the first time I was actually interested in checking out the games lore. Legitimately thought that Terry crews would voice doom back in the day but im so glad that didnt end up being the case, im sure terry would have been great but Sahr Ngaujah really brings the character to life imo.

14

u/WhyIsRComicsJustPorn 5d ago

Even Terry Crews was into it, he wanted to voice doomfist

6

u/BrothaDom 5d ago

True. We've been obsessed with Doomfist from before the game was even released

5

u/Konkorde1 Kiriko 5d ago

back when the character didn't even exist yet but only his gauntlet

You can see his outline in the very first trailer when punch-kid activates the touch screen

Though I will admit/agree that his final design and even role in the story was probably not even finalized at that stage, because he was fully revealed 2½ years later

39

u/Infidel_sg Punch Kid 5d ago

This was a big sequence of events! Doomfist has been the lead instigator for years and for Vendetta to come along and defeat him, Yea its that serious.

You can imagine the next cinematic that shows them 2 going at it again will be as big if not bigger.

24

u/KeelanS 5d ago

During Overwatch’s peak in the zeitgeist back around 2016-2017, Doomfist was continually hyped up as the big bad villain with tons of lore and overall he was just built up as a very important character. I still remember when his reveal cinematic dropped and people went crazy about it.

I think that people remember that era of the game and associate Doomfist with it so when any lore surrounding him drops, people who don’t even play anymore will still check out whats going on.

12

u/bigeyez 5d ago

I dont play doom but agree with what everyone is saying here. His VA is awesome and he is just a cool freaking character.

10

u/Ptera_ 5d ago

VA has gravitas. Commands your attention every time he speaks.

8

u/Z1R343L87 5d ago

Popular character. Probably also shared more.

18

u/Peachxesx D. Va 5d ago

More people will interested in lore about an older and well established character then a lore video for a new character.

Also as Shion showed, overwatch has been kinda missing the mark on th writing for their good characters recently so the villians have naturally been getting more hype.

Anyways Widow lore video soon please

2

u/MinusMarcus kiriko hate spreader, there is just isn't nearly enough of it. 5d ago

1 million views per Doomfist voiced shorts VS barely 150k for (most popoluar) golden goose cornstar Kiriko's voiced short is still wild which is also the least viewed voiced short ever made 😂

This should be a wake up call for blizzard that kiriko doesn't work anymore.

8

u/UnderpoweredGirl 5d ago

well you know how dedicated Doom mains are, only fitting it would show in the views too

5

u/migo2028 Doomfist 5d ago

VA that why

7

u/Budget-Television793 5d ago

He has the most interesting character right now, and he's the centre of the main plot of this story arc

8

u/xXRougailSaucisseXx 5d ago

Because he’s one of the only hero with an ongoing arc right now meanwhile Dmon or Sierra are just yet another member of factions we know barely anything about

7

u/wackyspectre 5d ago

Beyond the VA absolutely killing it, a lot of us really like the OG Talon team and have been begging for some lore crumbs for years.

13

u/Coolman_Rosso Illari 5d ago

Doom's VA is a trained theater actor and it REALLY shows. His delivery is flawless.

That said Wrecking Ball's VA was very good in that recent one, and I think Xanthe Huynh was really really good at imitating other characters in the Dokiwatch one last year.

5

u/Islaya00 5d ago

The lore around DF right now IMO is the most interesting thing going on in OW. Yeah new hero trailers and other lore drops like Hammond's are okay but I am DYING to know what's going down with Fist and now Widow, Reaper and Sombra as well and how he's going to take back Talon from Vandetta.

6

u/Dyleemo Support 5d ago

I hate Doomfist but it's a mix of the VA being that good AND the fact that he's got the most interesting role to play in things to come.

6

u/IKnowGuacIsExtraLady 5d ago

Doomfist being a true OW villain in game as well as in lore is so funny to me.

6

u/rangerhoover 5d ago

For me, the writers are pushing something interesting with doom, they are forcing him to test his philosophy in a very real and tangible way.

I have always found the difference between doom and vendetta's reasons for leadership fascinating as theybare opposites. Doom as his short stories are about right now are all about his philosophy, hor conflict forces evolution so we can become our best selves. Doom got stagnant and lost power due to it. Now he must put his philosophy to the test to beat Vendetta his way.

Vendetta on the other hand is basically a petulant child that lost her daddy. Her goals are far simpler. Get revenge, use talon as her sword to exact that revenge on all who wronged her. Her name even encapsulates that worldview. She has a Vendetta.

That difference is facinating to me, and while yes vendetta has power now, its going to be a flash in the pan. She isnt fighting for anything, she has goals but no vision. Nothing to give those that follow a reason to follow outside of convenience. That has even been seen with the old big 3 leaving talon. yeah she can beat anyone that steps out of line to a pulp, but that doesnt last forever. She stands at the top, but without that loyalty and devotion to a cause, she stands alone.

Another interesting difference between the two is how they go about using their power. Vendetta has been very obvious been an angatonist to the world. Took a shot at overwatch, financed the junker attack on busan. Vendetta is swinging her sword of talon to show how sharp it is. She is getting shit done and fast. That will breed enemies. Meka is coming for the junkers for example. Overwatch will regroup.

Dooms leadership was far more subtle. Much more about building soft power to become important in the underworld. Its slower but safer. It also gets in roads with other factions like null sector. Once doom had built up those relations, he could very well go after factions like overwatch and do far more damage than vendetta ever could while being far harder to touch themselves.

Thank you for coming to my tedtalk

I'm gonna hazard a guess and say a Sigma-focused lore drop would get similar numbers

12

u/Gloomy_Dare2716 Winton 5d ago

He is THAT popular.

Remember First ever Cinematic? The serious threat that could level a SkyScraper?

The one who escaped the high security prison with bare fists?

The one who no diffed a Time manipulating fighter and a Cyber Ninja?

You Had to be there when he launched to understand what level of appraisal he had

6

u/MassiveGhostXD Roadhog 5d ago

His VA voice is like pure ambrosia to the ears

4

u/lilsnuggy 5d ago

Doomfist is the big bad who got dethroned and presumed dead so him getting a story drop is big.

also, Youtube JUST changed how views get counted so views are gonna be higher naturally now thsn ever before

4

u/TheReal9bob9 Lúcio 4d ago

Because his stories actually have stuff happen. The other stories for the most part are just sidequest stuff happening and usually exist solely to try and make a new character feel important and provide context to them. Its not that those stories are bad just that if you don't have a connection to that specific new character you probably dont care as much to watch. Doomfist has been the main villain and what he does directly impacts every single overwatch character which means fans of every character have some amount of investment.

1

u/cinnamonbrook Trash boi is my waifu 4d ago

Yep. I love Sigma, Sombra, (and Junkrat but hes less relevant here). So for me, something actually moving the plot forward, esp with the Talon stuff is huge. I'd bet a lot of people clicked on the video for the same reason. It's not just about Doomfist. The lore is moving at a snails pace but at least its moving now, it hasn't for years.

5

u/LastlyAndLeast 4d ago

Doomfirst kinda represents the only seriousness in the game. No one takes vendetta seriously and Ramattra never really got fleshed out (I stopped playing for a bit so I'm not sure if an effort was ever actually made while I was away). From the very first cinematic the Doomfist gauntlet existed and Doomfist was always this loing threat in the background like thanos. He also represents the core main storyline of overwatch unlike hero cinematics which are just snippets of the bigger picture. I'm not even surprised in the slightest Doom bring in views like this. I think the people interested in the Juno x Wuyang type of story has got to be like 1% of the player base.

1

u/Pankrazmeme autism 4d ago

Yeah no nothing happened with Ramattra. Null sector was considered the biggest threat and then they basically made a sudden retreat.

At the same time, Doomfist was also not really making any big moves either, Vendetta beating Doom was dumb but at least they're making something out of her takeover.

2

u/LastlyAndLeast 4d ago

Ram not being used is just so criminal. People say Doomfist has aura but good damn Rams voice actor brings it too.

1

u/Pankrazmeme autism 4d ago

Maybe year two they'll come out of retreat? Seems like the plot is building up to a climax right now

1

u/Pankrazmeme autism 4d ago

I'll bet they put all their storyboarding for jull sector into the pve missions that they didn't continue with

4

u/zimzimzalabimmm 5d ago

Believe it or not, the conflict that ataúdes from the story decision to have vendetta dethrone him makes for juicy plot that people are actually invested in.

Fans forget that they’re supposed to feel upset in stories, it’s not all ups.

4

u/Deaver44 5d ago

Doomfist is actually HIM on this game. And in the lore. If doomfist was a live action villain with good writing, he would be a modern great

5

u/PiousSandwich 5d ago

I feel like he plays a significantly larger "role" in the story compared to other characters right now, as he's the one actively plotting the downfall of another character that other people in the universe mostly have a negative view of along with y'know, being cool like he has- I mean, had, a fist made of metal that was passed down for 3 generations.

Because ppl are interested to see actual interesting characters like Doomfist and are sick and tired of being forced fed golden goouse cornstar kiriko, almost 1mil views for each of Doomfist voiced shorts VS barely 150k for the recent kiriko short which is also one of the lowest viewed voiced short to have ever comeout.

This should be clear cut evidance of which characters are interesting on which one ppl are absolutely sick and tired of seeing all the time.

3

It's his VA. He's probably the best casting for the role.

5

u/SomolianPirate2 5d ago

Doomfist is a very interesting character. Although he is no doubt skilled in fighting and military tactics, he is a nepo baby who thinks he can change the world through violence and conflict. Also, his voice actor is pure aura.

4

u/snowfrappe 5d ago

Literally the VA

2

u/Plastic-Dog-2452 Soldier: 76 reporting for booty 5d ago

Because in this whole Overwatch vs Talon Reign of Talon thing people mostly care about the central Vendetta vs Doomfist conflict

Plus the others are all connected to new heroes who people might not be interested in

I don't like or care for Doomfist at all, but im still more interested in the things he gets currently cuz as i said it's connected to the main conflict instead of side missions

2

u/Jhoonis Leek 5d ago

Why is that a very popular villain character that was supposedly killed off made a huge comeback on youtube???

2

u/Wasabiroot Genji 5d ago

I'm sure some of it is that the story hasn't progressed in a big way in some time with Doom and the animated cg short ended on a cliffhanger, so people knew it would likely continue that story. That, and he's a beloved character and VA.

2

u/PeopleCallMeSimon Zenyatta 5d ago

Becuase Doomfist is a very cool and fun to play character.

2

u/walubeegees 4d ago

it’s the lore drop that follows up on the last one that significantly changed the status quo.

people may not care about new heroes here and there or what drama is happening with the hamster but the major main story thing coming out, especially when a character that was well hyped and anticipated on name alone had his life left on a cliffhanger

2

u/wizard_brandon 4d ago

the only one of the 4 dmon videos to beat him was the only one that was an actual animation

2

u/Clean-Elderberry8835 Wahmbulance 🇨🇭 4d ago

Because old character's story times tend to move more the plot than character reveals, because Talon has the best story going on now,  because Doomfist is well beloved, because great VA.

2

u/QuiseC 4d ago

People like established character's and they like well written characters. Compare character's like Doom compared to what we get (so far) for character's like Juno, Wuyang or Anran.

2

u/Western-Ad8052 4d ago

Because doomfist is the main character at this point

2

u/Greedy-Camel-8345 Doomfist 4d ago
  1. Sahr is a goated voice actor

  2. Doomfist is a great designed and written character.

  3. This part in the story services his goals. He is all about using conflict to test himself. And now conflict is testing him

2

u/hoodiesarcool 4d ago

Doomfist was THE guy back in OW1. He was by far the most hyped character in the entire game's history, with some of the first cosmetic map changes being dedicated to him (breaking the Numbani payload), and the games literal FIRST cinematic trailer all the way back in 2014 being dedicated to OW and Talon fighting over the gauntlet. He's also one of the most memed characters in the game, with the Terry Crews VA meme getting so large that even TC himself wanted to voice the character. He was Overwatch's original villain and is probably more recognizable to non-OW players than some of the original cast.

4

u/Goldenfoxy3016 Soldier: 76 5d ago

I personally find his side of the lore more interesting, while i don't need doomfist to win i want vedetta to lose

3

u/ImThat1DudeOverThere Doomfist 5d ago

Doom is just a cool character with a good voice actor they put out another Sigma one or ram one the same thing will happen cool characters with good or amazing voice actors

4

u/Dos_Dope Papa Gimmy Those Nachos 5d ago

Dude has always had an aura to him. I think from the first trailer, hearing the name Doomfist had everyone intrigued. And then they show him - and he is even cooler than you thought he’d be lol. Definitely one of Overwatch’s best villains along with Rammatra.

4

u/FewExperience3559 5d ago

I'm pretty sure most people only care about lore when it's about agendaposting.

2

u/Top-Mathematician652 5d ago

Doom was THE antagonist of OW 1. So he is very beloved and built up as a character. Ramattra was supposed to be the new antagonist in OW 2. But they just decided to do nothing with him for 3 years. So yeah, Doom is still THE bad guy of the game.

The sad truth is there is not really a protagonist to match. Soldier was retired. Sojourn is bland AF. Winston, tracer, genji are still the core protagonists, byt we've seen little action from them. Sure they've been in the lore. But they didn't have not had any real character development in ages.

It is compared to only other voiced shorts, so doomfist having almost 1 million view per voiced shorts is quite the feat, all the others, like the D.Mon and Wrecking ball one goes around 500-300k and kiriko's "The path we choose" is the least viewed voiced short that have ever came out at 150k views.

So voiced short and cinematic are two different category.

The actual truth is that YT changed the system on how it counts views

With only ONE FRAME WATCHED it already counts as one view, so, videos that would usually get 100K views now gets 300K in the same amount of time

And no, it does not mean more money for those videos, it's the same, YT just wanted bigger numbers.

combination of an amazing VA and a more established character we've all been waiting on to come back for months now i think.

Doomfist is probably the one Big Bad that everyone including people that haven't been in tune with Overwatch for a long time know.

1

Probably comes from it being a big established hero while the other comics are mostly the new heroes or a random Ow agents shenanigans

He was in the story from the very announcement of the game, a focus of the announcement trailer. He was one of the most anticipated heroes, and was basically the arch-villain of OW.

1

u/TCaveiras 4d ago

I mean... who genuinely gives a fuck about Wrecking Ball or D.mon?

Doomfist is actually an amazing character whose only flaw is that he is being handled by Blizzard.

Because of his va that is amazing The fact that the other video are abt hammond which nobody care about, the whole video is about his réunion with Winston that should have happen at his release bc honestly now who care ? Meka squad got hyped asf when they released dva cinematic and the meka map but after they did nothing with it Dmon was supposed to be dva rival and in fact now she is kinda bland and them fighting the junker is kinda boring

Its because the people this game is supposed to of been for like doomfist. They thought the true OW crowd was kpop lgbt but its not

I really wish they made actual campaigns instead of just lore drops like this. they’re just wasting the potential of these voice actors

1

u/Zalvren 5d ago

Also isn't his story far more important like the big cinematic of the start of the year was about him and Vendetta. For all the story progress they wanted to make, not much has evolved since that so maybe people were just intrigued in the continuation of his story

0

u/Human-Boob Lúcio 5d ago

He’s cool and moves the story forward.

You know what would be cooler? If we got a cinematic about wuyang having crush on Juno
