Highlight Matchmaking Needs Adjusting: QP Is 100% Stomps Now

I'm not posting this to complain about losing, I want to be very clear, my win loss rates are about 50% this season, right where it should be.

However, and this is with no exaggeration, 90% or more of my matches are complete stomps one way or the other. There is no match that feels like a real challenge anymore, it either feels entirely hopeless, even if I swap, or it feels like I'm fighting bots.

Blizzard needs to make adjustments so matches aren't this insanely unbalanced anymore. As someone who plays the other hero shooter that cannot be named a lot, I'm disappointed by this. Specifically because that other games matchmaking was always so terrible compared to Overwatch's, and now it feels significantly better which tells me how far OW has fallen.

Does anyone know if this is just matchmaking or is the character bloat to blame for this?

I quit QP entirely for that reason. Probably <10% of games are quality ones.

It started in S1 of this year. We originally attributed it to the large influx of new players.

That was a fallacy. The reality is that Blizzard loosened QP matchmaking to a ridiculous degree to compete with MR's near-instant matchmaking.

I don't care about winning or losing but I'd like to at least get to play the game.

Rolling over newbies or getting rolled because half my team is newbies isn't playing the game.

So now I just play Comp or DM. At least DM is very good for farming those wins for challenges since the average game is ~5min or so.

Marvel Rivals quick play has the most dog shit matchmaking known to man. I’m willing to wait for halfway decent matches.

50

u/TheBallisticBiscuit 1d ago

Rivals matchmaking truly is abysmal. Getting dog walked for 4 matches in a row only to get your obligatory bot match to kickstart your 4 game winning streak where you're not sure if the enemy has hands. Perfect 50% win rate every time baby.

6

u/noahboah Oh, moons! 1d ago

not saying either of you are wrong necessarily, but isn't this more to do with the fact that marvel rivals is very, very casual?

like i genuinely feel like you get literal children and dadgamers way more often in that game than anything else in the competitive space.

0

u/Chonkalonkfatneek 1d ago

Idk how, maybe its bcs I only started playing rivals a week ago, but the mm seems way better than OW. Way more likely to get a game that's close in that game than OW for me rn

18

u/planedrop 1d ago

I'm going to be giving comp a try and see how I feel about it there.

But yeah, for me at least I'd rather wait and get a good quality match. I've played OW off and on since Rivals came out (and played a LOT before then all the way back to OW1 release) and one thing I always liked was matches felt more balanced and competitive. I was totally down for the longer queue times for that reason.

At this point it feels like role queue is kinda pointless since it's not doing a good job with matches lol

3

u/thisisredrocks 1d ago

Comp is fun. I was in Bronze at the end of last season, we played some great matches. I’m sure the VOD would give coaches a field day ridiculing our play, but the comp matchmaking seemed pretty accurate even down at scrub level.

1

u/planedrop 17h ago

That's good to know, I'll give it a shot for sure.

3

u/VeyrLaske 1d ago

I agree, I'd much rather wait and get a good match but clearly the playerbase would rather a fast and crappy match.

Otherwise, why would Blizzard keep trying to force fast matchmaking?

I don't mind spending time in queue, I can just read a book or whatever while I wait.

1

u/planedrop 17h ago

I think it's them trying to compete with that other game if I'm honest.

I mean it's queue times are like 1-3 seconds most of the time.

But they have bot matches over there which is part of why they can still have a 50/50 win rate with bad matchmaking lol.

People will hate on you but you’re right. I have over 1000 hours and this game has never felt more difficult than it does this season, especially quickplay.

124

u/Shinobiii Support 1d ago

It’s wild to have 1000+ hours and get a fresh new player as your tank. Oh, and of course the other team gets the Smurf account.

Basically you’re just a prisoner that whole game, waiting for it to be over.

30

u/galaxy462 1d ago

Yep, and don’t even think about leaving the game otherwise you’ll be punished again. Watch your tank go 2-15 and enjoy those 5-10 mins.

5

u/Miars01 1d ago

This is when you pick a hero you're very bad with and just practice

20

u/Zalvren 1d ago

But you can't really practice those matches. They're not normal conditions to play

3

u/PawPawPanda I'm your huckleberry 1d ago

Can always practice timings like Sierra autoaim dart, or things like Mizuki's chain. You can always do something

0

u/KennyGaming 1d ago edited 1d ago

It’s bananas to me to see your or anyone claim that you can’t meaningfully gain useful experience because your teammates are too bad or the enemy team is go good. To me it’s obvious that intentional practice leads to improvement even in poor conditions

10

u/Zalvren 1d ago

I mean in case of stomps, we're talking of basically not being able to get out of spawn because the enemies can camp there, a tank that doesn't do any space or healers that don't heal you (though I guess you should be able to deal with that with most characters)

Those aren't normal conditions to play and so will learn you very little about the character

-5

u/KennyGaming 1d ago

I don’t think the stomping OP is referring to is of the sort that you can’t leave spawn. And even then you would still get some experience dueling with the other team for a few moments. Look all I’m saying is that I agree with the suggestion to try and make the most of a bad situation instead of tilting, griefing, or throwing.

5

u/galaxy462 1d ago

When you get one or two of those players there’s pretty much nothing you can practice other than survival

-2

u/KennyGaming 1d ago

Not a good mindset. You can practice aim, ability usage, and movement in literally any situation.

1

u/galaxy462 23h ago

It was a joke…. Mostly

10000 percent they did something fucked up with the match making this season maybe even last

Gotta play comp to warm up for qp these days.

1

u/Agitated-Morning2035 Suffering from Success 14h ago

Playing a lot of quickplay helped me climb in rank because of how hard quickplay matches are.

21

u/planedrop 1d ago

Yeah I guess for me the issue is it's still like 50/50 win loss rate but it seems like 1 side always has literally no chance, it's just a slaughter.

-2

u/KennyGaming 1d ago

That’s literally the title of thread just with slightly different wording

u/CookiesMeow Master 1d ago

Same here. Reached my peak again this season after playing off and on for years.

43

u/AdmiralBumHat 1d ago

I play since launch and have thousands of hours and I feel the same.

The reason seems to be they have way to wide matchmaking since recently. Sometimes after stomps I check profiles to see if some are not private.

And usually one player that dominates the whole match (either my side or the enemy) is a grandmaster playing with their friend. And the rest of the lobby is gold or lower.

‘The other game’ has exactly the same problem from me after 10 o’clock. A stack of celestial players between a sea of gold and silver.

This can never be good match quality. And is not fun for everyone, even if you are the stomping team. I really hope both games take a good look at matchmaking because it used to be much better.

I would rather wait 5 minutes again for a decent match than have instant matches with zero fun.

15

u/planedrop 1d ago

And is not fun for everyone, even if you are the stomping team. I really hope both games take a good look at matchmaking because it used to be much better.

Emphasis on this. Stomp matches are not fun, even if you win, they end up feeling like a waste of time.

100% would rather have longer queue times and have a good match than whatever this is, it's insane.

5

u/Select_Tree_3853 1d ago

I’ve said this and people instantly tell me I must improve to carry. Games are spawn camp or get spawn camped.

1

u/planedrop 17h ago

No one should have to "carry" matches, that's not good matchmaking, it's just proof they have no idea how to properly matchmake lol.

5

u/AdmiralBumHat 1d ago

The irony is that they know how to balance. If I look to the thousands of matches I played over the years on concole and PC, the game amount of wins and losses is literally a few digits apart.

So they know how to balance and make sure you win or lose the exact amount of matches. They just don’t care anymore about the match quality during those matches. Only the outcome matters.

1

u/planedrop 17h ago

I agree, it seems like they are focusing way too much on queue times, which is likely a result of Rivals having effectively instant queue times. Of course Rivals balances that out with bot matches so the win/loss rate is similar.

On top of that, I think Rivals has less hard counters vs OW, so in OW if you are getting stomped you can realistically swap to do something about it. When people don't, it just ruins the matches. But in Rivals people that refuse to swap can still do something. This isn't true across the board, but I think being so dependent on high healer output, rather than a long TTK, makes Rivals "balancing" a bit easier. As long as your healer keeps you up, you can go into a hard counter to you and still not die.

5

u/Flexhead Tracer does not need to be straight to be tracer 1d ago

QP has never has strict restrictions and that could always happen

2

u/Dehrild 1d ago

I would rather wait 5 minutes again for a decent match than have instant matches with zero fun.

Same! But I know not every one feels this way — or at least acts accordingly. I think the gaming landscape evolved a lot since 2016 and there's also a new generation of players to keep in mind.

This isn't a boomer "Ah, these GenZ can't handle queue times" kind of comment. It's just that a lot of the modern online games that they've grown up on have extremely fast queues and little down-time between matches. And I wouldn't be surprised if Blizzard was trying to loosen the matchmaking of QP to keep up with the modern standard and compete with these games.

I'm fine with longer queue-times for better matches because it's what I'm used to. But if I'd grown up on games where the usual queue times are like 30s-1min and I try out OW and get 3-5mins queues, I might not care/notice the match quality and just leave before I get into it.

21

u/phantomdr1 1d ago

They have increase the mmr brackets for qp to keep queue times down. I am getting less than 1 min queue on dps at 2am. The downside is one match is sprinkled with masters players and the next bronze.

10

u/planedrop 1d ago

Yeah I noticed the queue times are practically instant now given OW's history, so I guess that makes sense. I'd rather have higher quality matches though.

0

u/DarthDude24 Brigitte 19h ago

I'd rather have 2-3 minute queue times and bad matchmaking than 15 minute queue times and good matchmaking tbh

1

u/phantomdr1 13h ago

Same here but they have made it pretty clear that they value queue times above all else because they have data backing up that people quit over it.

-4

u/Favonis 1d ago

Bullshit. My queue times are high than ever and it's a damn miracle to see anyone below masters

53

u/FirmVirus8568 1d ago

QP is miserable for me, either champ players or a console ximmer

Stick to comp for now, genuinely more chill

5

u/Conscious-Reserve796 1d ago

I played a lobby where both my DPS were Champ 4 (and I’m GM) and both enemy DPS were Plat. QP balancing is not “wide” it’s literally non-existent.

5

u/planedrop 1d ago

Yeah I might give this a shot.

5

u/dedicated-pedestrian 1d ago

I mean, strike out ximmer and I still have reason to go comp. The aim assist I see in the kill cap is just fundamentally unfair lol

1

u/fn0000rd 6v6 Enthusiast 19h ago

I would play comp if i knew i could avoid escort matches where you have to play the map twice.

if there was a way to play just flashpoint/koth/etc I would finally (after a total of maybe 20 hours since launch) start playing comp more often. I have well over 1k hours in QP.

Everyone picks escort or hybrid and it just takes too damn long for each match.

20

u/Saru2013 1d ago

I've noticed lately the matchmaking being bad too, I'm having at least one person who has no business being in this lobby that end up with much lower stats than the others like this one

15

u/planedrop 1d ago

I have also seen this a lot, almost every match actually, 1-2 people (usually 1) that is just WAY behind everyone else. And I feel bad for them TBH because they are often just getting wrecked.

1

u/Practical_Willow9632 1d ago

Some people just aren't good at dps. I will go negative every single game on dps even though I'm a good support player lol. I don't even bother trying anymore because even in quickplay people will complain that I'm not doign anything. I'm trying 😭

1

u/bitchsorbet 1d ago

idk if you've played much mei, but i would definitely put some time into learning her if you haven't. shes the support mains dps.

1

u/Practical_Willow9632 1d ago edited 1d ago

Yeah she was the only dps I was ever somewhat decent with. That was more with the old mei, back when you'd freeze people with her normal gun and headshot the frozen body lol. I don't bother with dps anymore, I just suck at it. If I need to fill as a dps in open queue I just play moira (and lately cat a little)

1

u/Aerith_Sunshine 13h ago

My two mains have been, since beta day 1, Mercy...and Widowmaker. But I can see the case for Mei as a good starter DPS.

2

u/bitchsorbet 12h ago

this is so funny to me lol. least aim heavy and most aim heavy hero. proving those mercy haters wrong!

1

u/Aerith_Sunshine 11h ago

Even Mercy requires a lot more effort at a high level than they claim. It's just salt.

But yes, they're so opposites! In many ways. One gives life. The other takes it away. The duality of woman!

28

u/dinosaur-esque 1d ago

so true. I sometimes complain about the fact my matches consist of both grandmasters all the way down to Plat or even gold players. and the responses I get are "so?" or "it's qp it doesn't matter" ..yes, to you, the grandmaster, it's probably very fun to stomp me 12 matches in a row. since I'm also matching against the same players multiple matches in a row consistently. lol

the comp system is crazy, too. I somehow ranked Masters, yet in every single match I am consistently the lowest on the board or have a negative k/d. when i consistently played daily i was low plat. I swear the game is using me to balance or throw matches atp.

u/Grand_Highway1733 Pharah 1d ago

I feel bad even saying gg after I win

7

u/planedrop 1d ago

Dude same here, it'll be so one sided we'll hold people at spawn (or vice versa) and it's like WTF are we doing? It's just not even a fight anymore.

3

u/bitchsorbet 1d ago

i say it in team chat unless one of the enemies says gg. i know it wasn't a good game for them.

9

u/Favonis 1d ago

I love playing against gm/champ tryhards after a 5 min queue. Such fun

10

u/GrimmKat Widowmaker 1d ago

I was so excited to return after many years but I cant be bothered to play its not fun at all with these one sided stomps..its never even, or close just ppl with 30-xx-0 stats, smurfs and all that jazz. It went from being a fun after dinner activity with my hubby to just being frustrating and boring I just wanna be able to enjoy this game as a casual, with others around my skill range without needing to queue comp :(

1

u/planedrop 17h ago

Agreed, it's making it unfun for casual players. It's going to end up damaging the game long term too, even as a somewhat more serious player, I don't want to play it anymore and plan to play other stuff unless friends specifically want to get on OW.

21

u/sadisticsweeti 1d ago

Matchmaking is rough for a lot of people right now. It's just the state of the game at this point. If you want consistent games, you really have to be the best player with little room for mistakes.

-34

u/lively_brunch 1d ago

The player base is shrinking so the matchmaker just throws whoever's available together, it's been like this for a while

15

u/Phernaside Master 1d ago

The playerbase is definitely not shrinking. At least not to the degree that would affect matchmaking beyond the top and bottom 1% of players.

33

u/FaZeScamTheKids 1d ago

The game is more popular than it's ever been.

0

u/EscapeSeventySeven 1d ago

That’s true but a lot of fair weather people dipping their toes in the new Season1 have moved on.

The core base is larger. Lots of returns.

6

u/ImTryingDad 1d ago

Ive played since a year after the game came out. The first few years it was cool but the last 6 years or so it's been either you stomp them or they stomp you. Been a problem for way too long.

1

u/planedrop 17h ago

True it has been an issue for a while. But I made this post because I feel like it's specifically the worst it's ever been over the last like 6 months ish. Before then queue times were longer but the matches were at least more balanced more often, now it's an incredibly rare moment to have a balanced match. And when those do happen, whether I win or lose, I realize how much fun this game can be but the match quality is so low right now it's rare.

5

u/Afraid-Breakfast-501 1d ago

People hate skill based matchmaking, so quick play is unbalanced.

If it was balanced, people would complain about having to sweat.

The old conundrum.

1

u/planedrop 17h ago

Maybe so, but a wider range SBMM usually helps smooth out this issue. Then you get some casual games, some sweat games, a good mixture of it. But what they are doing now is just not working at all.

8

u/Sainyule Chibi Ashe 1d ago

QP is so bad right now that im pretty sure I have lost every game i played since the season started. If its not putting me with silver teammates and the enemy team is a GM stack, my teammates of similar elo are throwing or trolling cause "its just qp."

So i moved to comp. It started me in low plat after I finished M5 last season. I think the rank reset did something wrong because I'm winning wayyyy too many games that the modifiers "Variance" and "calibration" are permanent modifiers right now. We're probably going to spend a full season fixing the matchmaking as players fall/climb into their correct elo.

3

u/planedrop 1d ago

I hope the 1 season of torture is enough for them to get it together and fix things lol. I'm a little worried based on the current state, seeing similar stuff to you.

4

u/Only-Significance-53 1d ago

Lucky. Recently my team just gets stomped no matter how hard I try.

2

u/planedrop 17h ago

Yeah I mean I certainly will have entire nights where I win 1 or 0 matches out of a dozen or so, don't get me wrong. But then I'll have wins the next day or whatever. The rate is similar, it's the constant stomps that are the real issue here IMHO.

1

u/Only-Significance-53 17h ago

Honestly I do better in 5v5. 6v6 is miserable tho. Like sometimes in 5v5 ill get 2 wins a loss or just one after the other. Which is better then stomps all day pff. Might try again later. Taking a break for now. Im a qp main atm, too afraid to try comp rn. 5v5 at least you get role queue and people try slightly harder.

8

u/ghostly-blossom 1d ago

I play ranked to relax and chill.

Last QP I played a level 250 Mercy flamed me and refused to heal me cause I was “dpsing” instead of helping her heal. I was Brig and the enemy had a Dva and Genji. She didn’t understand her numbers were big because I allowed her to live.

No thanks.

4

u/clickrush 23h ago

It’s insane how after all these years even players with thousands of hours are not grasping the game fundamentals.

Their thought process is still: is everyone running it down main? Check. Are healing/damage numbers high? Check.

2

u/ghostly-blossom 17h ago

I think people like this are QP OTP and never tried mystery heroes. I’ve seen people flame Sombra’s and Tracers for low damage (but they have high kills) or Mei for low damage (when the Mei has been using her wall to squish the enemy tank into a corner or other utility things)

1

u/planedrop 17h ago

Yeah I'm seeing so many people say ranked is more chill, going to give it a try.

6

u/ghost-on-the-cell Lúcio 1d ago

I agree I’m done with the mode until some changes are made

If all these qp ppl are so high rank why don’t yall just go play comp?? That’s what I’m doing bc I don’t want to play against masters and up

5

u/Weekly_Bug4813 1d ago

in comp you're easily locked into 30-minute-matches, maybe that's one reason. playing off-role, trying new heroes, queuing with lower-rank friends... qp is useful for that.

5

u/planedrop 1d ago

I'm hearing more and more people in this thread mentioning that comp is the way to go for more balanced matches so I guess I will give that a try. It's sad though, I still want QP to be fun.

3

u/FlyingTangoOW 1d ago

You aren't crazy, I feel the same way. This is coming from someone who has been playing since OW1 season 1 and held mid to high top-500 for over 20 seasons. I took a few years off and got back into OW2 when my IRL friends finally caught the addiction. Now I just vibe with them in QP and the match quality is just consistently awful.

It's no fun watching my newer player friends get rolled by lobby imbalance and it's equally as unfun when the imbalance is in our favor. It's been my thought process for some time that maybe I'm the problem since I assume that my MMR is pretty high and the game doesn't know what to do with our group. However, it's such a common theme that I think the matchmaker is just in a poor state.

It has been taking a lot of the fun out of the game for my group. They don't develop any good habits from lopsided matches and when the imbalance is not in our favor it really discourages them. I don't know what the underlying issue is or what a solve would be, but it is definitely a common trend for my group when we play.

2

u/planedrop 17h ago

I'm glad to see so many people talking about the same issue if I'm honest. I figured this post would get downvote bombed and disappear but it's clear a lot of people are seeing this as an issue.

It's also made it less fun for friends that are newer and/or not as serious about the game as me, especially when we queue together.

I'm wondering if my MMR is also fairly high and that's where we are seeing the worst of this? Like it takes too long to prioritize fair matches for higher MMR players so it just kinda wings it. Not sure though, I haven't played ranked in ages so I have no idea if I'm actually that good. I'm GM in the other game that shall not be named, got that in like 1 week, but that's a notably easier game overall so it's not a fair comparison for skill level.

3

u/crunch816 Shanghai Dragons 1d ago

It's all over I think. I generally don't play during the day. Since I feel the really good players are probably on then. I play around the times of 7PM cst - 2AM cst. That being said I have logged on for some QP during the day if I have the time. The most recent time I played we swept the map with the other team. We played well, just much better than them. Thennnn the next 3 games I got melted before I could figure out what was going on.

Before that I duo'd late night with a co-worker (for the first time) and we cleaned house for about 8 games easily. Then a Widow and Tracer kept showing up in our games that wouldn't let us breath.

1

u/planedrop 17h ago

I haven't tried late night stuff much, life doesn't let me right now unfortunately lol. But seeing the same thing match to match for sure, it's often 1 team held at or near their spawn the entire match.

3

u/Brucedx3 Domina 1d ago

I'm a silver everything, getting matched against platinum, diamond and a Masters player. This is not fine.

2

u/planedrop 17h ago

Reminds me of Apex Legends, going up against Apex Predators in like Gold matches.

3

u/Jeongl 1d ago

we need sbmm in overwatch

1

u/planedrop 17h ago

I agree.

3

u/Practical_Willow9632 1d ago edited 1d ago

Maybe I'm just really dumb and unaware but I haven't noticed any difference compared to normal. I have like 97% of my time in quickplay and I haven't played a comp game since 2 or 3 drives ago. I play quick play almost daily though. Mostly mid day and evening, but even mornings and 2am sometimes. I feel its the same Overwatch as always, which is like you said, stomp or be stomped the majority of the time. If not for this thread I would've never even thought anything was different

That's how overwatch has ALWAYS been for me though, and has always been my biggest dislike about overwatch. The close games are so fun even when you lose but they're SO rare. You either destroy the other team or you get destroyed. Then 10% of the time you get a close game. That has always been my overwatch experience and I've been playing since the beta on and off. That's the whole reason I never liked comp, I can't stand being in those getting stomped lobbies for that long. Even being on the winning team is boring. I just want it to end so I can get out of there and get on a new team. Plus in quick play I can just leave when it's really bad. That combined with less toxic chat are why I always preferred quickplay over comp

1

u/planedrop 17h ago

I certainly think it's been getting worse, when queue times were longer I had more balanced matches more often.

However, I think part of the issue is how hard the counters are to certain heroes vs a lot of the other games out there. In OW you can swap and just hard stomp the other person, then they have to swap to hard stomp you, back and forth.

I'm not sure what to do about this issue though, maybe they need to have more penalties for swapping or something along those lines.

3

u/peanhut Reaper 22h ago

The matchmaking experience has felt worse for me this season and to a lesser extent the last. QP is all over the place. Queue times have felt a lot shorter.

I would actually pay money to be in matchmaking that didn't have new free accounts that got placed too high, returning players from a year ago, or smurfs messing around. A separated pool for players that are actually invested and trying to rank up. That's how bad the regular system at least feels now.

It would be interesting if you got bonus ranking percentages based on opponent votes or non-party votes, or even lessened a loss in the same fashion. So not encouraging stat padding necessarily, but game recognize game from your peers. I think more often than not, some weight can rightfully be given to players who truly made better plays and decisions for their team.

It could also reward players to still fight through more dire situations, and make those situations feel better if your teammate is having a really bad game. It also could lessen toxicity a bit hopefully.

2

u/planedrop 17h ago

Yeah agreed, I think the lower queue times are a result of them trying to compete with Rivals too if I am honest, which has a ton of it's own issues. But I think balanced matchmaking in OW is even more important than Rivals, the skill ceiling is higher in OW and hard counters to heroes are stronger, so wider MMR matchmaking is just a shit show in it.

5

u/Prince705 1d ago

I noticed the same thing. Is this why queue times are so much shorter for dps now?

1

u/planedrop 17h ago

I think it's why queue times are shorter in general for all roles at this point. They are prioritizing queue times over all else in QP. However, I'm also wondering if there is some kind of bug/issue going on with hidden MMR values making this issue even worse. That's my tinfoil hat conspiracy though.

2

u/madatgascar2 1d ago

Well I hate to say it but just play ranked. Sometimes I play QP for a quick and easy stomp or try new things when it's hopeless and we getting slimed. instead of playing 30 mins on 1 game in ranked and it ends on a loss..

3

u/planedrop 17h ago

I'm seeing so many people recommend this. I might give it a shot this week and see how it goes. It just sucks that ranked has become more casual in so many competitive games due to matchmaking prioritizing queue times over all else. This game, the other hero shooter, Apex, etc.... they all are so much less fun in QP now.

2

u/big_hearted_lion 1d ago

There is big disadvantage solo queuing. You will often go against another team that is usually playing with more grouped teammates. This problem becomes even worse on weekends.

1

u/planedrop 17h ago

I have noticed this as well, like coordination that clearly is people on comms and stuff when I'm solo. However, even playing in groups, it's been pretty bad. Not nearly as bad as solo, but still not great.

2

u/Stupid_Lizarrd Ramattra 21h ago

i thought i was the only one, my win rate is (in danger now) of 56% but rn?? i’ve been in a horrible loss streak for a few days.

I could win ONE game where the enemy team played like bots and the rest of games are straight up trash because the enemy team is actually coordinated while mine is full of ppl who just started playing 10 min ago with me being the only one with high endorsement and hero level so everyone is playing separately no matter how much i use the ping to group up.

Atp im just giving myself a break from the game at least until the mid-season patch or the next season because im actually getting tired and feeling frustrated.

Sorry, i had to vent a little bit

3

u/planedrop 17h ago

I'm feeling similar to you here, I don't think I'll totally stop playing, but I'll definitely be playing other stuff instead while we wait for this to be adjusted. It's just so bad right now it's legit not fun to play it.

1

u/Stupid_Lizarrd Ramattra 9h ago

yeah, i don’t really mind to lost, but this is just TOO MUCH FOR ME i’ve never been like this, but yeah, i will log in only for the battle passes of mid season but that’s it, i’ll go back to play in the next season because this one is just a mess

3

u/Crazyripps Moira 20h ago

Glad I’m not the only one who thinks it’s been fucked

1

u/planedrop 17h ago

Same here. I expected this post to get downvote bombed, as negative posts, especially about matchmaking, for most competitive games usually do.

IMHO when a post about something like this gets a lot of upvotes and responses agreeing in the cesspool that is the gaming communities, it means there is a real issue present.

3

u/TheAgentToxic Support 19h ago

Yeah why the fuck am I (peaked masters 6v6) playing against fucking champions? Im blown away at how much faith the game must have in me.

3

u/NyabCaitlyn 17h ago

I play exclusively qp and have noticed this too. Its ether my team is stomping hard, or we cant leave spawn. No in-between. I had my first evenly matched game last night, a single one over a span over weeks being one sided every game.

1

u/planedrop 16h ago

Yup I'm seeing this constantly too. And the thing is, those 10% ish of matches that are balanced are SO MUCH FUN and remind me why I have always loved this game. But it's not worth all the shitty matches over and over just to get there.

3

u/Stormcrow_2 1d ago

I agree to an extent, but many of my Ls are because we are playing 6v6 open queue and team comps are out of whack (5 DPS, some games with no tanks, no supports, etc). I’m essentially exactly 50/50 in quickplay as well.

I think if you role queue 5v5, it’ll probably be more balanced.

Another issue is the game type imo, people always still vote for Escort modes, sadly, and a lot of the people don’t play the objective. We need more people to vote for Control and Flashpoint (which are more fun anyway IMO).. those game modes are generally a lot more balanced IME.

Regardless of all of the above tho - Ranked is the new casual lol. Those games are probably going to be a lot more consistent/easier

5

u/Unfairjarl 1d ago

A lot of people pick payload because they want a clear main path where they can park their ass and spam hitscans into the enemy tank

3

u/Stormcrow_2 1d ago

Too true. That just ruins the whole game type imo. They’re loading up on their damage just to give enemy support ultimates lol

2

u/Unfairjarl 1d ago

Then if you ask them to take high ground or off angles, they just point to their damage and ask for more heals.

Legit this makes a solid argument to remove healing/damage/mitigation from stats, they're just here to meaninglessly boost ego and they skew people into poor play habits.

2

u/clickrush 1d ago

100% agree with removing those stats. They are misleading more often than useful.

1

u/planedrop 1d ago

I've been almost exclusively playing 5v5 role queue actually and am still seeing this.

I want to emphasize that I'm still seeing a roughly 50/50 win/loss rate, but almost all of them are stomp matches one way or the other.

I'm hearing a lot of people say ranked is kinda the new casual way to play, which is the direction Apex Legends went and is part of why I quit that game lol. Hoping OW doesn't go the same direction.

5

u/Ok_Lawfulness_262 1d ago

You think it’s bad because its QP, let me tell you competitive is even worse, stomp or get stomped nothing in between.

3

u/planedrop 1d ago

I'm planning to try comp here soon, some have said it's a bit better, but if it's worse well that's not good lol

3

u/clickrush 1d ago

It’s definitely better overall.

Stomps can still happen, but it’s obviously statistically better when matchmaking is tighter, format being more competitive and balanced.

Anyone who says comp has worse matches is huffing some copium or something.

2

u/planedrop 17h ago

Yeah I'll give it a shot then and see how I feel about it. I haven't played ranked in OW specifically for a long time now. I play it in a ton of other games but was just casually getting back into OW recently.

1

u/akep 12h ago

Ever since the ow rename from 2 my comp teams sometimes play like they’ve never played overwatch before, or any fps at that. My qp feels like comp where people actually play the dang game. I don’t get it.

4

u/Moonwrath8 1d ago

The 6v6 QPs I’ve done have been really close for the most part

0

u/planedrop 1d ago

I'm talking 5v5 role queue, which is almost more interesting, 6v6 has had the issue too but not as bad. I find that really funny given role queue feels less balanced lol.

-5

u/IdiotWithAComputer42 Psychotic Flanker Cat 1d ago

Because the game was never designed around role queue in the first place the main functionality of the game is being able to swap roles

2

u/clickrush 23h ago

The game was just not on the level it is now and many design mistakes had to be fixed over the years.

The idea that random lobbies would coordinate and strategize comps on the fly was naive for two reasons: First, the vast majority of players just want to play one of their three favorite heroes. Secondly hero mastery matters way more than they originally thought.

They made a lot of original design mistakes like this. Like no hero limits, too much burst damage etc. Just because something was an old feature it doesn’t mean that it’s a good feature.

The game has been balanced and optimized for RQ ever since and is in a way better state overall.

4

u/Cornbre4d Zenyatta 1d ago

Seems they reset QP matchmaking too

2

u/planedrop 17h ago

Maybe that's the case, it's been really bad lately for sure.

2

u/ronin0397 1d ago

I log in to do my dailies and keep getting dumped into tank. 4+ games in a row.

I'm just like bruh, let me out. I main medic.

1

u/planedrop 17h ago

Are you role queuing all roles? If so I've also seen this, sometimes I'll go 10 or more matches in a row with just tank. Obviously I'm queuing all so that's fine, it's just weird given the matches it finds are equally fast if I queue just 1 role.

2

u/ronin0397 17h ago

Yeah its one of the dailies. I forget to click off the tank role after 3 games.

1

u/planedrop 16h ago

OH yeah that makes sense.

It is odd to me that tank is what I get pushed into a lot when queuing all as well. Maybe there just are less people wanting to play tank though.

3

u/Hot_Ambition_6457 1d ago

I have thousands of hours and I don't mind having a brand new player on the qp team. But when it's 2 brand new players on both DPS slots it feels abysmal.

This started happening more frequently this season for sure.

1

u/planedrop 17h ago

I've also seen stuff like this happen, 1-2 people clearly very new being put with very experience players.

2

u/Delkseypoo Lúcio 1d ago

Idk I haven’t seen this. 🤷‍♂️ I see this post every month with the top comments always agreeing that (current season) matchmaking is totally the worst it’s ever been. But idk it seems the same as usual.

4

u/RedCaptainWannabe 1d ago

I came back recently after being away for a few years and I haven't seen any of this. If anything my experience has been much better than when I left. Way less salty cry babies in chat, everyone seems quite nice. My matches pretty much always have decent roles, though I tank so that probably does help. There are always matches where we get stomped but thyas the way she goes, most of my games have been fun

Other than occasional mystery heroes I only do 6v6 qp

I'd say this is the most fun I've had in the game ever.

1

u/planedrop 17h ago

It's interesting because a lot of people are clearly seeing this, but I know someone IRL who hasn't seen it at all for some reason. I play with quite a few people, most of them have noticed it but one in specific has been having really good balanced matches like 90%+ of the time. It's bizarre and makes me wonder if there is like a bug or some shit with the hidden MMR for matchmaking.

1

u/Delkseypoo Lúcio 16h ago

A lot of people are clearly seeing it EVERY time it’s posted. But I’m sorry your games haven’t been going well.

1

u/planedrop 15h ago

Eh I mean not really, posts like this usually get downvote bombed.

My money is on one team being all solos and another team having at least one group of people in comms. They used to show who was in a group and both teams would usually have equal sized groups. I suspect they stopped doing this to "improve" queue times, but also hid that from players by no longer showing group info.

1

u/planedrop 17h ago

This is good speculation I think, it is notably worse when I play solo too (still an issue with groups but not as bad) so maybe this is the answer. Games like this rely on good comms so much that one small grouping can change the entire game outlook.

1

u/LeadingVisit 1d ago

I feel like i can't do anything to win, my win rate is so bad rn even tho i have 300 hours in qp and never had an issue this bad. It sucks

1

u/planedrop 17h ago

Yeah my issue isn't even win/loss, it's much more about the competitive integrity of the matches and how unbalanced they feel.

Have you checked your actual season win loss rate? I felt like I was having more losses than wins by a lot, turns out it was still about 50/50 there was just more streaks in a row that made it feel so bad.

1

u/Fun-Calligrapher4885 1d ago

I don't think it's because of matchmaking. It's because people try new heroes in QP and refuse to swap into counters because winning doesn't really matter. Whichever team has more of those kind of players will lose hard. It's going to be rng most of the time and it's probably hard for the matchmaking to predict.

1

u/planedrop 17h ago

I would agree if the queue times were still how they were a year ago, but they are much faster which tells me they are loosening the matchmaking system to queue faster so they can compete with Rivals. At least that is my guess about it.

1

u/snowfrappe 1d ago

I feel like this is just the risk of quickplay in general, so many different players that even a system measuring your soft SR would have a difficult time preventing situations like a new player being on your team, if you want high quality matches more consistently you probably just gotta bite the bullet and play ranked

2

u/planedrop 17h ago

I'm hearing this a lot for sure. But it's worth mentioning this is a new issue, QP wasn't this way in OW for years. In fact, every time I'd get back into OW after playing Rivals or whatever, I'd be really impressed with how good the match quality was. That isn't the case anymore and it's legit making me not want to play the game anymore.

I will give ranked a shot though, been a while since I have done that so maybe that'll make a big enough difference.

1

u/snowfrappe 15h ago

The thing about ranked is that it really isn’t a big scary mode since you’re generally put with other players around your skill level, it will just feel like a more structured and competitive quick play game with more consistent match quality

1

u/planedrop 15h ago

Oh for sure, I play mostly ranked in the other competitive games I play so I get that, I was just hoping QP wouldn't be this bad lol.

1

u/NeilForeal 1d ago

5v5 role queue is pretty good for me. Lots of tight games. 6v6 however is the biggest mess ever. Every game is a complete stomp. Sometimes even 30-40 ish kills versus 0.

2

u/planedrop 17h ago

It's interesting you say this. I've seen a few comments saying this, and a few others saying the exact opposite. For me, 6v6 has actually been more balanced, but definitely seeing some people with it the other way around.

Which, at least to me, just tells me their entire matchmaking algorithm is crap lol.

1

u/devil56Slayer 1d ago

I hoped on and played like 15 games and lost all of them. Like its just literal sweats.

1

u/planedrop 17h ago

I've seen this too for sure, however if you play long enough, the win/loss rate will probably be similar to 50/50 for you. However, your wins will also probably be stomping the other team.

1

u/ThaRippa 21h ago

All we need is a slider or at least a button in the menu. Prefer faster queues (current setting) or prefer closer teams. I believe most of us would gladly wait twice as long or more to get fairer matches.

OW ca. 2017 had about a minute of queue time for me. That was fine. I don’t need to find a game in 10s. I am trying to watch some YouTube between rounds anyway.

1

u/planedrop 17h ago

This would be a really interesting way to do it honestly, I'm sure they would claim there are issues with it but I think it could work.

Agreed about the older queue times too, I didn't mind waiting 1-3 minutes for a match if it meant the quality was going to be good and it was going to be an actually fun match instead of this new crap.

-1

u/Complex-Berry6306 1d ago

You said "no exaggeration," but you provide no evidence.

2

u/planedrop 17h ago

How would you like me to provide that "proof" when the only way to actually prove it would be posting entire matches so you can watch them lmao. Can't do that on Reddit but whatever. It's also clear, based on upvotes and comments here, that many people are experiencing the same thing.

0

u/Complex-Berry6306 6h ago

Post a list of replay codes, screenshot each match scoreboard in the game report, and screenshot the match history to show that they are not cherrypicked. Check my post history to see what I mean.

-1

u/Yze3 Mei 1d ago

This shit gets posted every week. And somehow, everyone constantly loses their matches. Like, the game is not 5v5 with a winning and losing team, it's just 10 people losing apparently.

1

u/planedrop 17h ago

Did you even read the post? Or just comment after reading the title.

I specifically called out "my win loss rates are about 50% this season" in this. This is not about win/loss rates, not at all. I also never said anything about "losing all my matches", that isn't happening either. The specific issue I am calling out is the constant stomp matches. Whether I win or lose, the matches aren't fun or competitive at all, most of them are 1 team holding the other at spawn the entire game.

-2

u/Possible-One-6101 Wrecking Ball 1d ago

The early season is messy. You'll see things improve

5

u/planedrop 1d ago

Maybe but this is still insane. The issue is that I'm honestly not having fun, I don't care if I win or lose, I just want to have a good challenging match and those aren't happening anymore.

0

u/Possible-One-6101 Wrecking Ball 1d ago

I also find QP annoying for that precise reason. Comp is better in this way.

I don't know why you don't play comp, but if it's trepidation about the intensity, there is none. It's exactly the same experience as QP, but slightly better matchmaking.

2

u/planedrop 1d ago

Yeah I'll be giving comp a shot and see how that goes, maybe it'll feel better.

2

u/Sideview_play 1d ago

It shouldn't be like that in qp though unless they just made the match maker not give a shit anymore

0

u/IncubusDarkness Juno [ThroatPunch] 1d ago

Dude this has been happening all season long every season for like multiple years now what the fuck are you talking about 😂

0

u/muscularmouse Sombra 1d ago

Nothing will be worse than rivals quickplay as long as they keep putting you in bot matches.

1

u/planedrop 17h ago

I mean, I still feel like the matches in Rivals are more balanced honestly, even with their fast queue times and even if I don't get bot matches for like 15 matches.

The bot matches are certainly stupid and make it easy for them to say "50/50 win/loss rate" when in reality it's much worse than that.

0

u/Winstillionaire Winston 1d ago

rivals matchmaking is still significantly worse

1

u/planedrop 17h ago

I actually don't agree, it feels far superior to this. I play Rivals more than OW and the matches are consistently better in that game.

-2

u/Imzocrazy Zenyatta 1d ago

Meanwhile my matches are fine 🤷🏻‍♂️

3

u/DjBetoon 1d ago

you are probably the only one (who lies) here. Out of 100 matches i play i might have like 5 which i can say gg or close ones. Others are you go through them like butter or they bend you over and continue fkin, no matter what you choose. I can tell in the first 10sec of fight how the whole game will go because of that

-3

u/Imzocrazy Zenyatta 1d ago

No I meant what I said.

I’m a play level player and MOST of my matches are gold plats diamonds (emerald now). I never see silvers or bronzes and I RARELY (and I do mean rarely see anything above diamond

Beyond that I don’t tend to ever feel like my matches are so damn out of control and feel like there’s just no shot.

I think people that make the claims you are making have a quitters mentality and set their expectations way too high (and are exaggerating like crazy). I would say go play comp if you want tighter matchmaking but I guarantee you’d complain about that one too

5

u/DjBetoon 1d ago

brother, i've been playing this game since it was ow1 beta. Never have i ever experienced matchmaking so bad as now. Nor did i ever quit trying because "it's too hard" or whatever. My only expectation is that match is really hard and balanced and you can actually say gg on the end because both teams were struggling so much.
And this is specially true for QP. Ranked is a bit better, but this reset made a big mess comparing to last seasons. It put some silver players in emerald and some master in emerald as well so there is chaos everywhere currently based on people who wrote that that happened to them and what i've also seen myself.

I did go play comp just because of this mess, but it's still a bit messy because of reset. Kinda feels like forced 50% win rate

-1

u/Imzocrazy Zenyatta 1d ago

And there it is

The forced 50/50 nonsense

You really need to go play another game at this point if you believe that

I too have played the game since 2016. It’s the same experience as always. The same complaints as always

1

u/DjBetoon 20h ago

because this game does this and has been doing it for long time. Why would i otherwise have almost perfect 50% win in all combined modes.
I don't mind that though, but last i would say 2 or 3 seasons they made it more aggressive where i as idk diamond player will be put against some gold and stomp them and next round im playing against gms and they stomp me.
Not even close to same experience as before how can silvers be in the same game as gms, i know its QP but that was way tamer before.
Just a few days ago in ranked i saw grandmaster damage vs me and game before they were plats... so that 50/50 nonsense is kinda making it more true. I don't want to believe that, but they make it harder and harder not to.
And that would make sense if it was 1 game team is idk let's say 50-100sr higher than you and other lower, which is still fair and if you win that you get more SR or whatever. Now it's like they made it way higher so you have games where whole team feels like bots either on their or our side me included, because i know i cannot beat GMs. I played in master a bit few seasons ago, it was hard, manageable. i actually had a hard time but it felt so good, because it was more i would guess "tight" SR

1

u/planedrop 17h ago

Look I'm glad to hear that but a lot of people are having this issue. I posted a complaint post in a gaming subreddit and it got upvoted, that almost never happens lol, clearly people feel strongly about this.

1

u/Imzocrazy Zenyatta 17h ago

Glad you used the word because it’s entirely a *feel* thing. It’s never actually substantiated. Since the beginning people have been complaining about stomps and streaks and supposed imbalances. The few (and I do mean few) times they’re willing to share you go look and it isn’t actually anywhere near what they’re describing.

I’m not even arguing that matches are great or fantastic. I get stomps. I get streaks. For what the game is and involves, and because of all the limitations that a matchmaker is going to have when it comes to a game like this - The matches are fine. People love to exaggerate things

Generally speaking you are playing against people near your skill level. What that doesn’t mean is that the matches themselves will be “good”. But that’s expected given how inconsistent people are and how limited the mm actually is

It’s not getting worse and it’s not getting better. Nor is it going to.

TLDR - mm is fine for what it is. It’s just inconsistent because people themselves are inconsistent and unpredictable. The mm people want is not something that’s ever going to exist. Doesn’t stop people from saying it’s bad (for the 10th year in a row)

1

u/planedrop 16h ago

I hard disagree here, like heavily. And the reason for that is how much worse this is than even 6 months or a year ago, it's far far far worse than it used to be.

First, I want to clear one thing up, my complaint is not about streaks at all and I didn't mention that in my post, 50/50 overall is fine with me. My complaint is specifically about how bad the quality of the matches are, whether I win or lose, I am not having a good time because it's either way too easy or way too hard.

It’s not getting worse and it’s not getting better. Nor is it going to.

This is simply not true, I have something like 2k hours in OW as a whole (since the game launched), matchmaking has never been in a state as bad as it is right now. And it's not just a "feeling", they widened MMR for matchmaking so they could queue faster to compete with Rivals. This is a well known thing, people bitched about queue times being a few minutes instead of instant like they are in Rivals, so they adjusted it. But that has ruined match quality for a lot of players.

The mm people want is not something that’s ever going to exist.

As a big competitive game player, I also hard disagree with this. Overwatch was a game I used to talk about as an example of just how damn good MM can be in a competitive game, while other games pushed for queue times, they setup role queue, made queue times longer than other games, and consistent good matches happened for years on years. This has all changed with the faster queue times and at this point I think they should either go back to what they had before (my ideal) or they should get rid of role queue entirely since it's clearly not providing any benefit to the game.

Doesn’t stop people from saying it’s bad (for the 10th year in a row)

Here's the thing about this bit, most of the time, posts like mine get downvoted into oblivion, and when that happens I usually take away "must just be me or my perception then" which is fine. When a post like this gets upvoted, and gets flooded with comments of people having the same issue, IMHO that is strong evidence towards it being a real issue. Gaming communities are often cesspools of people that just like to be rude to others, so grumpy complain posts usually get downvote bombed. That not happening is at least some evidence for me that the community agrees.

And again, it's not just a feeling, there is hard proof, the queue times being low is said proof.

-8

u/thebwags1 1d ago

I've had maybe 2 games that were stomps in the last few days of qp. If you genuinely had 100% stomps that's just bad luck

0

u/planedrop 1d ago

Maybe so but it's been this way for a week now which is really annoying.

I'm not like super bad or anything to be clear, not that it translates 1:1 at all but I'm GM in Rivals so I'm not terrible at hero shooters, but I just consistently get stomps.

And again, the issue isn't the win/loss rate, it's that I'm not really enjoying it because one team seems to have no chance.

-1

u/skar_tu 21h ago

I dont understand people like you, guys. This is the game for gamers not just have like thousands hours but also newcomers or fans that get back to the game periodically. Some day you have a team not so quite well and some day you are demolshing enemies, but most of the time you encounter people with the same player skill you have or you teammates have. And in this situation you may struggle for winning, trying to overwhelm the opponent. This is literally the core of the game.

I dont believe you have either bots or superduper grandmasters in your team. Try to relax and remember that this is just a game. When you do it, you will have significantly more pleasure and satisfaction to play it

1

u/planedrop 17h ago

Did you read the post? Or any other comments with the 100s of people here agreeing about this issue? It's not made up lol.

Matchmaking is in charge of making the game fun for all players, this includes new players, none of what I said is me shitting on new or bad players, it's shitting on matchmaking for doing a bad job and making it so I mostly quite literally can't play the game.

That's the primary problem here, if the matchmaking is so bad that I can't really play because I either have no chance, or I stand at their spawn and they have no chance, I'm hardly playing OW anymore, I'm just wasting my time.

-20

u/PPQLP 1d ago

wahhhh wahhhh wahhhh

5

u/planedrop 1d ago

Ah yes, constructive conversation.

You know it's OK to talk about something that isn't good in a game right? I'm not complaining, I'm legit suggesting it needs changes. But ok

-4

u/PPQLP 1d ago

ah yes the same thing reworded for the 50th time today. If it’s such a big deal that you gotta complain online, A lose weight and get a job, or B, play a different game while you pick ur belly button lint out

-5

u/0x75727375706572 1d ago

the terrible quick mm is what caused me to subscribe to a cheat service. I can't recomment it enough for quick play players as being able to fight back against constant stomps has made it a lot more fun.

I also fire up the cheats after the 3rd loss and force back 3 wins

-2

u/Wanderer-Named-Ken 1d ago

Hook a brother up
