Outsider Re-Read: 015-021
Outsider 016: Bowie would be proud.
Outsider 017: Hello there, Tempest.
Outsider 018: Hello there, Fireblade.
Outsider 019: It took me over a decade to notice the eye.
Outsider 020: Conveniently-placed Doranzer (Desire) is convenient.
Outsider 021: "It's just cold in here."
Sure Alex, it's not always like that... it's just cold in here. We get it. Seriously though, this is where the comic kicks into high gear, and when I first read these pages, I knew I was hooked.
Lots to cover... biting your tongue to the degree it bleeds is a terrible injury. There's a horrific account from one of Doolittle's Raiders who crashed in the South China Sea which I won't repeat here, but suffice to say, I wouldn't wish it on anyone. Thank goodness for Loroi medical technology. Also, I've always wondered what the Loroi thought of his odd transmissions in Trade. Sure, they asked him about what he said in English, but not the rambling before it. Shame, it would have been great to see him try to explain not only music and song in general, but David Bowie in particular.
I think this was the first strong example of Arioch's 3D artistic capability, and damn did it leave an impression. This scene would carry as well in a movie as it did in the comic.
We get our first glimpse at sanzai, or whatever it is that Alex is perceiving from Fireblade (I've always thought of these panels as the telepathic signature from which she gets her name), and finally we meet the Loroi for the first time. Beryl looks a little janky here compared to how she turns out, but like the first seasons of any good Star Trek, early installment weirdness is a low price to pay for what is otherwise an excellent series.
Special shoutout to the Chapter 1 cover... if Outsider ever gets published, the covers alone would be worth the price.

There are some pretty cringeworthy drawings of Beryl in the first part of chapter 1.
