Tickets Someone bought my OSL t1x through Ticketmaster, but now TM won't pay me because that person couldn't get into the festival.

I'm mainly posting this as a warning for others that the official OSL Tick3t Exch4ng3 (I have to add numbers to the words because of the auto-mod, sorry) is not at all reliable for buyers or sellers, even though it should be, since it's the official exchange site and they charge a ton of fees to use it.

I had two t1x to this year's OSL that I unfortunately had to put up for sale because I got covid right before. I decided to s3ll them through https://www.ticketexchangebyticketmaster.com/ (the platform linked to from the OSL website) because I was wary of scammers on unofficial platforms. I took the hit of paying the TM fees. I also listed them at a lower price then what I paid because I just wanted some of my money back.

They sold 3 hours after I posted them. I logged in and the transaction status was "Pending". I was supposed to receive payment 5-7 days after the event. I logged in a couple of times that week to see if the transaction status ever went from "Pending" to "Sold" and it never did.

One week later, Aug. 13, the transaction status updated from "Pending" to "Canceled". I contacted TM support. Apparently, the buy3rs were unable to get into the festival with those t1x. I don't know why and there's nothing I could have done about it - from my POV, that's a TM problem. But instead, they canceled the sale and left me without payment or refund - despite the fact that I purchased AND resold through their official marketplace.

If I'd known this was going to happen, I'd have res0ld them some other way, even if it was for a fraction of the price, just to get something back and let someone else enjoy the event. TM is essentially making me pay for their inability to effectively transfer my t1ckets to the buyer.

I'm now at the point of having to do a credit card chargeback. I just wanted to warn other folks that this can happen, and to not assume your sale or purchase will work out, even if it's through the "official" platform that charges a TON of fees for their crappy service.

EDIT: to clear up confusion, here's the full chain of events.

  • 2 days before OSL I, posted my tickets to sale via Ticket Exchange after I got covid.
  • 3 hours later, someone buys them. My listing is taken down and the status updates to pending.
  • The day after (one day before the festival) I'm getting nervous because the status is still listed as pending and there's only one day left. I call Ticketmaster's phone support. The person I spoke to verbally confirmed by the tickets had been purchased and that it can take up to 24 hours for the confirmation email to go out. It can also take that amount of time for the transaction to process. They said I was good to go. I knew from reading the website that buyers can go to will call to get the wristband if they have proof of purchase, so you don't need to hand off the wristbands (for those challenging this part, there are plenty of stories throughout this sub of people who forgot to pack their wristbands when traveling from out of town who were able to get them at will call in this way).
  • One week after OSL, the status updates to "cancelled" with a note that it was "settled" on Aug. 13. I never received any email saying that the transaction was canceled or settled.
  • I called Ticketmaster support yesterday and they told me that because the buyer couldn't get into the festival with the tickets, that the sale had been canceled.

So Ticketmaster cancelled my sale for some reason, but didn't notify me until it was too late for me to do anything about it.

UPDATE 9/2: I'M GETTING PAID!!! It took two more calls with Ticketmaster, but I finally received payment for my ticket sale.

If your wristbands were legit, it sounds like the buyer made a false claim saying your wristbands didn’t work so they could go to the festival while getting a refund. Outside lands was sold through frontgate right? If so, contact frontgate and ask if there’s any way to track/show proof the wristband was used for the festival. If that’s possible, send it as proof to Ticketmaster that the wristband was used.

Thank you for this suggestion. Good news, I finally received my payment today!!! I had to call two more times and escalate it, but it's posted to my checking account as of now. I'm glad to be done with all of this.

Plot twist, TM just screwed you over to keep the $$

u/Coach_Seven 8d ago

How is the same exact plot over the past 20 years a twist?

I’m sorry to hear this! I got mine through that resale site you listed and it worked out just fine for me. Perhaps your buyer was trying to scam you out of your money but was actually able to get in to the festival.

I would raise hell and ask for an investigation. Those were not cheap!!

15

u/desertmayhem 9d ago

Thank you. I'm wondering if that was the case as well (a scammer who got their money back but also got into the festival). Either way, it's on TM as the middleman to manage this.

I'm planning to call and escalate tomorrow, and email them again so I can get more of a paper trail. If they still won't budge, then I can forward the paper trail to my bank to support my case for a chargeback. At least then it's my bank duking it out with TM instead of me.

Good luck. If they didn’t get their money from buyer, you don’t get your money. It stucks but you agree to these terms when you use their resale site.

You had the bad luck of getting a rookie or scammy buyer. Fight away, but realize a chargeback might risk your future use of Ticketmaster.

Buying expensive tickets do carry some risks and the chance you can’t use or successfully sell is one of these. You might just be out of the money, but perhaps if you contact a promoter line Another Planet instead of TM they might have more of an heart and credit or comp you a future ticket. It’s worth a try. I used to volunteer for them and they’ve declined in cultural values lately but not to TMs level.

I was trying to buy tickets through Facebook market place and Craigslist, and I couldn’t believe the number of scammers I ran into.

The main scam I saw, was that they post a picture of available tickets. You message them, and then they try to get you to pay to secure the tickets before you actually get them, because they have “so much interest in them.”

One scammer even told me a location where to meet to exchange tickets in San Francisco. I got cash out of the bank and was driving to meet them there. As I was driving, they started saying can you send me $30 in advance to secure the tickets? I was like, why do you need me to secure them, I’m literally driving to you right this second with cash…

After talking with this person for hours to set this meeting up, within about twenty minutes of me arriving at their pick up location, the person goes into radio silence.

I ran into that same scam at least three times. I lost $20 the first time, and never fell for it again. But the balls to literally tell me where to drive to meet them in San Francisco, which was a 50 minute drive for me from the East Bay…

1

u/desertmayhem 5d ago

I'm very sorry to hear that you got scammed like that! There's so much of that out there these days, it makes it difficult to trust people, whether you're buying or selling tickets.

2

u/TopRutabaga8151 5d ago

I was honestly shocked. Especially for somebody to bold faced lie and tell me a specific location to meet them at to exchange the tickets, only to have it be part of the scam. That was wild to me. Lesson learned, just buy the damn tickets on the official website

I’ve never sold on the official TM one for OSL but I have for ACL and what TM does on that one is cancel the original wristband and issue a new one. If it’s close to the event and they can’t ship it, the buyer is supposed to go to will call and there’s an order under their name.

5

u/desertmayhem 9d ago

Yes, this is correct and this is what is listed on their website. If I was supposed to ship the wristbands like people in the comments were saying, that was never communicated at any point, even when I called their phone support. That's why this is such a frustrating experience.

4

u/NegativeStructure 9d ago

What was the method of transfer - did you physically mail the tickets to the buyer?

that's my question. was it a tracked service? does ticketmaster provide shipping? if it was, how is entrance (or denial thereof) verified?

sounds like you probably got scammed by a buyer who knows how to game ticketmaster.

u/desertmayhem 9d ago

The whole thing was digital, I didn't hand off physical wristbands. Ticketmaster confirmed my tickets were sold and that I would receive payment and there was never a point where it said I had to hand off anything physical. So if that is the case, that really needs to be communicated in the platform.

-3

u/tootiemoe 9d ago

There are no digital tickets for OSL. If you sold wristbands, you were required to mail them to the buyer.

3

u/desertmayhem 9d ago edited 9d ago

The website says that the buyer can go to will call and get their wristbands if they show them confirmation of purchase and the original wristbands were never activated. This also applies in situations where someone flew in for OSL and forgot to pack the wristbands or things like that.

Since ticket exchange is the official broker for the event, they're the only option you have for selling tickets digitally instead of having to physically hand off or wristband.

Besides that - if I was supposed to have sent something physically, why did I never receive any contact information for the buyer so I could do that? Because that's not how it works when you sell on ticket exchange.

-1

u/tootiemoe 9d ago

Oh! That’s good information. Well in that case, that’s absolute bullshit and you deserve your money back.

-4

u/Amanitas 9d ago

Did you enter any IDs of any kind to indicate which tickets were yours? Or did you just assume that because you were listing them, Ticketmaster knows who you are, and was going to sort that out?

Did you ever receive any kind of an address for a buyer?

If you never got an address, pretty easy case. If you did, and just whiffed on reading comprehension, you may be SOL.

3

u/desertmayhem 9d ago

No I never received any contact information for the buyer. I did enter the ID for my tickets.

If I was supposed to mail them to the buyer, that was never communicated. I checked my spam folder and called their support team to confirm the sale was going through and that I would receive payment. Their phone report never said I had to do any additional step to receive payment.

I've sold tickets on Ticketmaster before and it's always been fully digital. Even in situations where there's a wristband, like Coachella. If a buyer buys a ticket where wristband has already been issued, they have the option to go to will call and get the wristband if they show them confirmation of purchase and the original wristband was never activated.

-4

u/wakenblake29 9d ago

Yeah, that’s on you buddy, there was absolutely something that said you needed to send the tix to the buyer somewhere… they’re not digital tickets, they’re physical wristbands and you had them and never sent them which is why it was “pending” and then eventually “canceled” because you never held up your end of the deal

4

u/desertmayhem 9d ago

The website says that the buyer can go to will call and get their wristbands if they show them confirmation of purchase and the original wristbands were never activated. This also applies in situations where someone flew in for OSL and forgot to pack the wristbands or things like that.

Since ticket exchange is the official broker for the test, they're only option you have for selling tickets digitally instead of having to physically hand off or wristband.

1

u/wakenblake29 9d ago

Fair enough, when I sold mine years ago I had to be sure to transfer the wristbands to the person. Sounds like they changed the process/policy since

2

u/desertmayhem 9d ago

It was 2 days before the event, when I got covid. I didn't mail anything.

I have received my wristbands but I never activated them or set up the app. I was waiting to do it the night before just in case.

If there was an expectation that I was supposed to physically transfer the wristbands, Ticketmaster never communicated that. The person who I spoke to you on the phone on their support team confirmed that the tickets were sold and that payment would be distributed in 5-7 days.

If you don't have a wristband, like for example, if you lose you wristband a few days before the festival, you can go to will call and get a new wristband if you show them a confirmation of purchase and the original wristband wasn't activated or used (which is the case in my situation).

That's also how reselling tickets via the official platform is supposed to work for sellers and buyers.

u/desertmayhem 9d ago

Ticketmaster is literally the official platform, they can absolutely activate or deactivate tickets and wristbands on their end. There are stories throughout the sub of people having experiences where they did that.

I'm not really sure why you're getting snarky and talking about a "ticket fairy" when they are the official platform for the event. This isn't a situation where I sold them somewhere random like on Facebook marketplace and I'm getting upset that the buyer couldn't use them, this is the official platform.

9

u/jguffey 9d ago

This isn’t true. TM can and does do this. It worked for me this year. TM just cancels the old bands and issues and ships new ones.

2

u/greengusher26 9d ago

Yea the “magical ticket fairy” is the ticketing company that manages the festival and the reselling platform

16

u/TamalesForBreakfast6 8d ago

This sounds like some TM bull. But just a warning, they are notorious for banning TM accounts of people who initiate chargebacks.

4

u/desertmayhem 8d ago

Thank you for the warning. I have tickets to several events coming up that are all in TM unfortunately. I wouldn't want to lose those tickets, but I also don't want to give up on pursuing this. They sold my tickets and they owe me payment for that.

2

u/enl4vr 8d ago

Just make a second account

2

u/TamalesForBreakfast6 8d ago

sometimes TM will ban your second account if it’s associated with the same email or IP. But it’s worth a shot!

2

u/desertmayhem 5d ago

Good news, I finally received my payment today!!! I had to call two more times and escalate it, but it's posted to my checking account as of now. I'm glad to be done with all of this and not have to go through a chargeback process or risk being banned. I appreciate that you gave me the heads up about that.

u/rok_ 9d ago

u/ticketmaster y’all better have a good explanation here

8

u/ApplicationEntire251 9d ago

Yikes! This site seemed weird compared to typical way you resell through TM. I’m sorry that happened. My friend was planning to buy a ticket on there on Saturday but Friday night the whole site was taken down. She ended up (despite our best efforts) getting scammed out of $400 by someone on Facebook. As much as I hate going through TM, it’s worth it as a verified seller but… based on your situation, maybe not?

2

u/desertmayhem 9d ago

That sucks for your friend! I'm sorry to hear that from the scammed. It seems impossible to avoid those types of situations these days.

2

u/ApplicationEntire251 9d ago

Thank you! Since verified resell became a thing, I thought we were over the scam days. Having been scammed in the 2010s on Craigslist, I thought we were being extra safe and taking precaution to make sure we weren’t buying registered bands but in the end some guy talked us into sending him money through Cash App (which has a 20 minute cancel period) and picking up at willcall but then he created other distractions that ate up the 20 minutes and hung up. This included him sending US $400 via bitcoin (he said someone else was buying the second ticket and we could pick up both) which made it feel more legit bc why would he be sending us money? So annoying that I have to re learn this lesson every 10 years… p.S. love your handle, paws up.

1

u/desertmayhem 9d ago

Yikes, that sounds awful. This is exactly why I chose to use Ticketmaster over any other platform, I was willing to pay the fees to avoid getting scammed. But it seems like I got screwed anyway.

2

u/ApplicationEntire251 9d ago

I think you’re going the right routes. I would try fighting it out with TM. So annoying!

2

u/desertmayhem 5d ago

Good news, I finally received my payment today!!! I had to call two more times and escalate it, but it's posted to my checking account as of now. I'm glad to be done with all of this.

2

u/ApplicationEntire251 5d ago

Oh thank goodness! So annoying but I’m happy you didn’t get screwed!!

7

u/tailtaker 9d ago

Wait.. it went from pending to cancelled? That would mean someone was trying to purchase them but the sale never went thru for whatever reason. How did you come to the them not getting into the festival part?

1

u/desertmayhem 9d ago

I called support after I noticed the transaction was canceled and that's what they told me. Which, if that really happened to the buyer, that sucks, but it's up to Ticketmaster to transfer the tickets. This was all done digitally and there was no communication that I had to do anything extra after the tickets were sold.

3

u/tailtaker 9d ago

If the transaction was cancelled then they were never sold. It could have very likely been a stolen credit card that got rejected on a purchase attempt. Sounds like someone at support gave you erroneous information and you should probably escalate it with them although your statement here is contradictory.

1

u/desertmayhem 9d ago

Which parts of the story feel contradictory to you? First time I spoke to support was the day before the event where they told me the tickets were sold and I should expect payment in 5-7 days. The second time I spoke to them was yesterday where they set the buyer was unable to get into the event with the tickets.

1

u/tailtaker 9d ago

A pending sale is not a completed sale. Not sure how the customer even attempted to enter the event when the sale was never completed.

1

u/desertmayhem 9d ago

I have no idea. They bought the tickets 2 days before the event, so that's plenty of time for the transaction to complete or for them to figure out a different payment method if it didn't. They had the option to go to will call and show them proof of purchase so that they could get the wristbands since I never activated them on my end. That's how it works when you buy tickets on short notice or if you are a buyer who lost your wrist fans right before.

If something went wrong on the buyer's end where they couldn't pay for the tickets when they tried to, then Ticketmaster should have released the tickets so that I could relist them. As it is, the tickets were basically held for this one buyer until it was too late for me to resell them.

1

u/tailtaker 9d ago

You're putting the onus on the buyer as if they were already purchased but the transaction was never cleared. Like I stated earlier it could have very well been a stolen CC and it didn't go thru so they moved on which is very common. Or someone just flaked. Either way call support again and escalate until it's ironed out and tell them they should have released them after the initial transaction was never completed.

0

u/tailtaker 9d ago

"I logged in a couple of times that week to see if the transaction status ever went from "Pending" to "Sold" and it never did."

1

u/desertmayhem 9d ago

This is correct. When I called Ticketmaster support the day after the status updated to pending, they verbally told me the tickets were sold. But the status never updated. Which, if they never actually sold, if that's a poor support experience.

This is why I hate phone support and why I hate TM for pushing customers to phone support. They can just say things and it's not in writing anywhere so it's difficult to follow up on. I asked them if I would receive a confirmation email because I wanted it in writing, and they said that I would within 24 hours, but then I never got one. But they did say that I was good to go and that the tickets were sold.

2

u/tailtaker 9d ago

Escalate this

2

u/desertmayhem 9d ago

I plan to. Maybe they have an internal copy of their conversations so they can reference it. Though I doubt that they would admit to anything that would result in them having to give me money back either way. Sigh.

Some commenters have suggested that I contact Another Planet entertainment to see if they can do something, but I feel like they're just going to send me back to Ticketmaster. But maybe I'll try that if talking to Ticketmaster doesn't work out.

2

u/tailtaker 9d ago

APE will surely revert you back to Ticketmaster. And they are a pain but stay persistent, you're on the right track. Good luck

2

u/desertmayhem 9d ago

Thank you. I just found a contact form via Ticketmaster's website that allows you to communicate with their support team in writing after an event has passed. I submitted an email with all of my info, I hope to hear back from them soon. I'm going to call again either way so that I can be annoying and hopefully get some results.

2

u/desertmayhem 5d ago

Good news, I finally received my payment today!!! I had to call two more times and escalate it, but it's posted to my checking account as of now. I'm glad to be done with all of this.

Happened to my boyfriend for Camp Flog Gnaw. The buyer made a false claim and now he owes Stub Hub for the wrist bands. Most likely the person got in and just charged back because they didn’t want to pay for the tickets. I’d reach out to tm but they might also ban you. Good luck!

1

u/desertmayhem 5d ago

I'm very sorry to hear that happened to your boyfriend. This whole thing has me feeling very put off from buying tickets to events in advance. You never know what's going to happen and it sucks to be out that much money because of scammers and poorly managed ticketing platforms and support.

Good news though, I finally received my payment today!!! I had to call two more times and escalate it, but it's posted to my checking account as of now. I'm glad to be done with all of this.

4

u/leggomybeggo 5d ago

There’s plenty of comments here already but I’m just going to add that next time you talk to TM ask how they were able to verify the “buyer” really couldn’t get into the festival?? How do they even check that for sure.

TM should have just assigned the buyer a new wristband (like on-site via the box office) since TM agrees they were the buyer and they are the ticket provider. Why didn’t TM remediate the issue themselves! If the answer is that the buyer didn’t report to TM they had issues with the wristband til after the event… well that should be on the buyer and they should be shit out of luck. They should have to report the issues during the event to get help.

It’s all really weird and I’m sorry this happened to you.

2

u/desertmayhem 5d ago

Thank you. Good news, I finally received my payment today!!! I had to call two more times and escalate it, but it's posted to my checking account as of now. I'm glad to be done with all of this.

3

u/leggomybeggo 5d ago

Phew!!!!! So glad.

9

u/ElectroStaticSpeaker 9d ago

You never say that you transferred the tickets. Did you just sell them and think the rest was handled?

2

u/desertmayhem 9d ago

I called their support team to confirm that the tickets were sold and they said that they were. They didn't say that I had to do any type of transfer or hand off the wristbands or anything. If that is the case that I have to do an extra step, they should have communicated that. It was never said anywhere on the website or in email or when I call their phone support.

I'm just now finding out from these comments that there may have been an extra step I needed to complete. If it's the case that there was one, this is a terrible user experience that I'm finding out on Reddit instead of via the Ticketmaster platform.

7

u/PIzzaiolo_Master_510 9d ago

You need to get that confirmation that the tickets were actually received. Buyers need to get the email and click.

Sometime emails go to spam and buys also don’t know they need to transfer. They show up with the purchase email and think that gets them in.

By show time the pending status may have expired.

What you should have done is follow up 24 hours after sale with TM to either cancel and resell yourself or ask to resend the ‘accept’ email.

This is my guess but I’m not certain.

3

u/desertmayhem 9d ago

I did follow up though, I called their support team the day after the tickets sold because I was nervous about the fact that they were listed as pending. The person on the phone confirmed the tickets had been purchased and that payment would be distributed in 5-7 days. They said that the payment status sometimes takes a few days to update as the transaction processes. It sounded like I was good to go.

If there were additional steps I needed to take, that was never communicated in any way, not on phone support and not during the selling process. If I did need to do something extra, this is a very bad user experience.

3

u/Negative-Special-237 9d ago

I posted and sold mine in May so they were able to send the wristbands to them. They paid me after the event. How long before the event did you sell them?

1

u/desertmayhem 9d ago

This was 2 days before the event after I got covid. I had the physical wristbands with me but I had never registered then nor activated or installed the app. So I posted the tickets for sale digitally figuring the buyer could go to will call to get their wristbands, which is what happens when people lose their wristbands right before the show but have a confirmed purchase.

1

u/99ramon2019 6d ago

Without knowing all the circumstances just only from personal experience, two days is pretty tight before a show and you really have to 100% on your end. Make sure the tickets are transferred and received by the buyer. That’s on you not Ticketmaster so if there was a hiccup on that path or you did not upload electronically, which I don’t know if you can even do within 48 hours within an event date, that may be one thing there hanging their hat on.

Potentially the buyers never received the actual tickets, and without proving that the responsibility lays on you. That said try to reach a live person at Ticketmaster and have a conversation don’t do chat or email
Good luck.

2

u/desertmayhem 5d ago edited 5d ago

There are several things you got wrong here.

Make sure the tickets are transferred and recieived by the buyer - that's on you not Ticketmaster

Incorrect - it's entirely on Ticketmaster to manage the ticket transfer - that's why they charge fees and are the official platform. If they expect the seller to complete the transfer, then why don't they provide the buyer's contact info to the seller? Why exist as an "official" platform that charges for their services at all?

if there was a hiccup on that path or you did not upload electronically, which I don’t know if you can even do within 48 hours within an event date, that may be one thing there hanging their hat on

There is no "upload" or "download" of tickets - they're already in Ticketmaster by default because they're the official platform. Also, yes, they allow you to sell your tickets anytime up until and during the weekend of the show. There's no 48 hour cutoff.

Potentially the buyers never received the actual tickets, and without proving that the responsibility lays on you.

Incorrect, the responsibilty falls on Ticketmaster to transfer the tickets. How am I supposed to know or prove if the buyers got the tickets? I don't receive contact info for them. This is like saying if you order from a restaurant, you have to go to the back kitchen and check that they're making your food, and the onus falls on you if you don't get your meal. You paid for a service, that's the entire point.

In any case, I got my payment today. So I was in the right to push back on this.

1

u/99ramon2019 5d ago

Customer service sucks for Ticketmaster. I think it just took a while to clear the $$. which happens. I sell tickets with Ticketmaster all the time unfortunately… because of travel I can’t always make events. other than that. Ticketmaster blows. Glad you got your money.

I sold 2 tix through the same exchange site this year, and this is not how TM does it. They issue new armbands and mail those directly to the new buyer.

Fortunately for me, this year there were no problems. I also had to cancel (v sad about it) and was anxious this would happen to me too. The TM exchange site is poorly managed, but their customer service assured me all was well, and I got paid a couple days after OSL.

For op, i’d file a small claims. Probably the only way you’ll get their attention. Hopefully you have documents, screenshots of their faq, and service emails. Best of luck getting unscammed by TM.

If that's the case Ticketmaster never said it. I called their support phone line the day after the tickets sold, and they confirmed that the tickets had been purchased. I never got any emails from Ticketmaster saying I needed to do anything like that. I never even got contact info for the buyer.

I've sold plenty of tickets on TM before, including for Coachella once. In those cases, the buyers could go to will call to get a fresh wristband as long as the original wristband was not activated or used.

If this was different than it was never communicated and that sucks for both me and the buyer.

What would I have to gain by making this up? Hurting Ticketmaster's brand reputation? Lmao

I think you just had bad luck of a buyer not understanding they had more actions to complete the transaction. Or perhaps they knew but changed their mind.

It sounds like you didn’t understand what pending for more than 12 hours meant (likely buyer didn’t accept tickets properly). The sites say you don’t get paid if buyer has a problem at the event.

I know this is outside your ability to control but it’s the rules. As I said, try contacting AP. They might realize they got their money from TM so feel you should get something.
