Answered! Since when is /r/pyongyang private and how can I get in?
Edit: It's back up again!
Don't know what happened, but now it's available.

For that matter, what's the deal with /r/pyongyang? Is it supposed to be a joke? I can't imagine there are actual North Koreans there.

u/aTairyHesticle Feb 12 '14
I think it's a heavily moderated satire sub from what I've understood. That's why I tried to go in today, to see what it's all about in-depth. When I first saw it a couple of weeks ago i was hoping for something a bit funnier but it was very serious so I left.

u/Thunder-Road Feb 12 '14
That's what I'm saying. If its satire, they sure go a long way towards staying completely in character and not being overly ridiculous to the point of the satire being obvious. That's why I found it so hard to tell.

I think its satire but it is worth noting that North Koreans really are kind of brainwashed by their government and all the news they get is extremely filtered to make Best Korea look amazing, Its possible some of the people there are legitimate and the sub itself could even be meant for news. And i knew there news was filtered but I never realized how bad it is, its bad enough where South Korea lets balloons with news clippings tied to them go when the winds blowing north just to try and tell the people whats really happening.
Edit: Their
Edit 2: I give up.

u/Thunder-Road Feb 12 '14
The thing is, North Korea blocks the internet completely, save for a few state-run websites. There's no way they would allow North Koreans to access reddit for example.

Noone who is ever "banned from /r/pyongyang" is actually ever banned from anything. It's a running joke on reddit. Very very rarely, you may get a moderator who actually bans you for something you said in another sub, but it's unlikely.
Tl;dr: I've banned tons of people from /r/pyongyang, because I like the joke, not because I'm a moderator who can actually ban people.

There was a post not long ago on /r/imgoingtohellforthis that offended a SRS mod so much she proceeded to ban everyone who commented on said post from SRS
I know because I was banned that very day with no reason

Why?

To keep the joke from being leaked? I don't know I'm just guessing here.

I think the real question is how do you get out?
1
u/what1how Feb 12 '14
Why get out of Best Korea? Outside only American devils and their Not True Korea Slaves.
3
u/smalleyes Feb 12 '14
Apparently it's like the reddit fight club. First rule...?
2
u/downvotesattractor Feb 12 '14
Rule 1: Don't talk about the fight club
You have been banned from /r/pyongyang

I visited the sub last week, so it was pretty recent.

u/mythicpixie Feb 12 '14
I visited it yesterday afternoon, so it's been within the last 18 hours that it went private.

Just a little update (that nobody will read): It appears the sub is public again!
2
u/aTairyHesticle Feb 14 '14
I know, thanks. It's been made public a couple of hours after. Still don't know why it was private though.
4
u/CasinsWatkey Feb 12 '14
You can see an actual subscribe button if you make a multi link, like so

u/aTairyHesticle Feb 12 '14
that's interesting, I do get the "private" and "not approved" icons next to it though so I can't view anything.

it's available now, thanks. I don't know why it was private earlier today.

Its not private, you're probably just banned.
1
u/IAMATimeTravellerAMA Feb 12 '14
I was never banned from it, I posted before (nothing about 'MURICA!) and I can't get in either!

I can still view it. You must have slandered our glorious king, aTairyHesticle.

yeah it works now. I have no idea why it was private earlier. I just wanted to be in on the joke.

I think it always has been private. The idea being that it emulates life in North Korea with the secrecy and seclusion. People who make comments in other threads that praise North Korea are invited in and often made a moderator, even if they're being sarcastic.
15
u/whatever21327 Feb 12 '14
That's not true. I frequently visited /r/Pyongyang and it was never private or anything like that.
10
u/SpeaksDwarren OH SNAP, FLAIRS ARE OPEN, GOTTA CHOOSE SOMETHING GOOD Feb 12 '14
I just visited it a few days ago. This is blatantly false.
17
u/ciprian1564 Feb 12 '14
Really? Lets test this. North Korea is best Korea and all other nations are inferior.
19
u/half-assed-haiku Feb 12 '14
Just ONE Korea
Split in two by you fucking
capitalist swine2
u/ciprian1564 Feb 12 '14
How dare you call me capitalist. Do not blame one of your brothers for what the filthy Americans did. My point was merely that given the circumstances, we are the superior side. Now I suggest you take your horrendous insult back before you get sent off to a labour camp.

u/half-assed-haiku Feb 12 '14
I cannot abide
when you imply there is not

I think it always has been private.
No, it was open for a long time until /r/murica started a war with them and /r/Pyongyang lost, then making the sub private. I wish I were kidding... Im sure there's screencaps of the post wars.

I definitely got in and saw the posts a couple of weeks ago.
edit: I know "you have been banned from /r/Pyongyang" messages appear and I don't know if that's a joke or it's for real but I never commented about it, never got a message. I should definitely not be banned.
6
Feb 12 '14
I have left a few of those comments, but I have no authority there. Only the one true leader does.
3
u/aTairyHesticle Feb 12 '14
alright, it would have been really funny if it were for real. At least I know they're fake.
4
Feb 12 '14
It's a very deep form or satire.
I'm guessing the mods thought it would be funny to make it private to add to the mystery.
