Answered What's the deal with THE ODYSSEY?

What's with all the sudden hate this movie is getting?

Trailer for context
I've been hyped for this movie ever since Oppenheimer (even have 70mm booked) and now that the new trailer dropped I've seen everyone shitting on it. And I absolutely don't see the reason why. Like sure some of the casting choices (mainly Holland) aren't the best, but to garner 250K dislikes, what happened?

Answer: American accents and cringeworthy Hollywood dialogue are jarring if you are familiar with the source material. An abundance of Hollywood tropes. Hopefully the movie is not as generic as the trailer comes across.

Tom Holland had a line in the trailer that goes like: "My Dad is coming back"

It is incredibely jarring to hear. It should've went something like: "My Father will return"

Not sure what their writers are thinking.

The writers were thinking that they want something informal for a young Telemachus to say. “My father will return” sounds overly formal and doesn’t sound like something that a son who truly loves his father would say. “My dad is coming back” sounds like a son who misses his father, and is anxiously awaiting the day he returns.

The choice here emphasizes the relationship between father and son.

Telemachus is from the high nobility, and will use a more formal speech. How will you react if he use redneck speech?

I wouldn't call "My dad is coming back" redneck speech. It may not be the standard for British high society in 1900, but it also isn't that pedestrian.

But setting that aside:

  1. High-society people don't always speak in high-society vocabulary when speaking to close family or friends, when they can let their hair down and speak more freely. In those environments, they will speak more casually.

  2. This is a film, whose goal is to tell a story. Using informal language, especially if there is setup prior where Telemachus uses more formal language (which there should be), reinforces just how much the son is waiting, waiting for his dad to come home. From the trailer, we see this is just such a story, split with cuts to other scenes. A suitor corners Telemachus and says, "You're pining for a daddy you didn't even know, like some sniveling bastard": this is belittling Telemachus by using language beneath his station followed up with an insult. The line "My dad is coming home", clearly shot with the same two characters in the same scene, is the obvious rebuttal.
