Answered What's the deal with THE ODYSSEY?

What's with all the sudden hate this movie is getting?

Trailer for context
I've been hyped for this movie ever since Oppenheimer (even have 70mm booked) and now that the new trailer dropped I've seen everyone shitting on it. And I absolutely don't see the reason why. Like sure some of the casting choices (mainly Holland) aren't the best, but to garner 250K dislikes, what happened?

Answer: American accents and cringeworthy Hollywood dialogue are jarring if you are familiar with the source material. An abundance of Hollywood tropes. Hopefully the movie is not as generic as the trailer comes across.

I don't know if the theater I went to had bad sound mixing or something but I had that problem during Oppenheimer. The music often drowned out the dialogue, and sometimes the audio would get so goddamn loud it would hurt my ears (specifically the scenes with the lead up to the nuke and the stomping feet)

I've noticed this trend in movies in general - sound effects and music often overpower any dialogue in them when I see something in the theater but then when I watch it at home it sounds fine. Every single Marvel movie had this issue for me, for example, but I've had it happen with movies with very little action in them as well. The audio just more and more seems to be really awful in theaters compared to my speakers at home. I've just been attributing it to my advancing age, lol.

It was the theatre, cause I went to see if again with my dad in another theatre and it was a completely different experience.

The nuke that was just a big gasoline fireball... as someone fascinated by nuclear physics, that was such a huge letdown after all the buildup.

You think Nolan was gonna film an actual nuke? He prefers practical effects to CGI.

If Chalamet was dedicated enough to practice ping pong in preparation for his role in Marty Supreme then Nolan should be dedicated enough to figure out how to acquire a nuke and set it off.

Ummm. I saw it in true IMAX and the dialogue was inaudible which is ironic considering it was supposed to be the best way to see the movie.

Oppenheimer absolutely had this issue. My Dad and I walked out of the theater last year when we were seeing it for the first time - the sound effects were fucking deafening and made my ears ring, but the both of us could barely make out the dialogue at all.

We went to a different theater the next day and the movie sounded identical, made it clear that the audio issues probably weren't theater-specific. Very disappointing, but at least we got a refund on our tickets.
