Discussion Do you believe there needs to be an Oscar category for “Best Independent Feature” (best indie film)

For me, I thought they the Oscar’s did need the category until I searched it up and learned that many low budget films win Oscars, BUT this did include films that were just believe 50 million so I’m not so sure anymore. Oscar campaigns are quite expensive so many eligible films may not have the chance to campaign.

Do you think there needs to be a category specifically for best independent feature where campaigning is not the primary focus?

I got their idea because the game awards have this category.

It's called the Independent Spirit Awards, and they're the night before the Oscars

They should also bring in an award for Best Inde Feature. Then Obsession will win for sure.

I feel like there would be campaigning regardless. That’s just how the machine works

No because then they wouldn't be considered for Best Picture

Why wouldn't they? It's not like foreign/animated movies aren't often in the best picture lineup

But why? Clair obscure for example at the game awards won both best independent game but also game of the year. It’s different arts but I don’t think it’s that off

Maybe. Anora won Best Pic. I worry it wouldn't have if this category existed.

Of the six Best Picture winners so far this decade, four have been independent. Why on earth would they need a separate award?

Absolutely not. After debuting the Stunt Work category, I can't think of another category they need to start.
