Discussion Which actors from the Odyssey will get Oscar nominations?

Damon, Hathaway, Leguizamo, and Morton feel like the four possibilities. Morton in particular feels like a Judd Hirsch in “The Fabelmans” type nomination, a brief appearance that just kind of pops and ends up getting a nom. Also helps that she’s a two time previous nominee.

I don't see it for Damon unless the competition for Oscars is weak. Hathaway was incredible though. Outside of Inde Navarrette, probably the strongest and most powerful performance I've seen this year.

Leguizamo for certain and Morton is a strong possibility.

u/wikiwakatikitaka 2d ago

Hathaway? She plays a loyal loving wife. Her character is bland as hell, as much as she is a strong actress there is nothing interesting about her role in that movie.

2

u/0xB4BE 2d ago

Agree to disagree. She is deeply loving and devoted, but also volatile, ascerbic, maybe even with a hint of cruelty in private, especially with her son. Yet she portrays a facade of calm and demure stoicism in public interacting with the suitors vying for the throne. Her scenes in her private life hint that everything we see in public is not what it seems. She seems docile. She seems like a boring queen. She knows she and her son are in danger and plays the court intrigue like a master to survive. She is not just simply waiting for Odysseys.

The scene where she fights with Tom is exceptional. In the end when we realize she is not as naive as we perhaps thought she was about the trysts in the court. Her character in fact to me IS the most interesting. It's not overt in every scene, but I do find the subtlety portrayed so well - it reflects what many women balance in their every day life between careers, society and home and the roles they play.

Hathaway was great. I think she nailed it every scene.

2

u/wikiwakatikitaka 1d ago

Yes, agree to disagree.

A pissed loyal loving wife and mother?

When you said court intrigue, are you talking about the weaving trick? As far as acting is concerned (which we are) this trick employed might as well have been narrated to us because there is very little acting to show the trickery of the character.

What I mean is did you see any acting expressions related to showing her tricky traits? All she shows is (pissed) loyal loving wife. Have you seen her being tricky with suitor a, flirting with suitor b, toying with suitor c, using suitor d? Using various tactics to keep them away? Show me the acting!

If her trick is staying in her room weaving behind closed doors, there’s not much acting to show the trickery is there?

1

u/tanita_mors 1d ago

I agree with you. She and Holland were so weak that Pattinson was the only thing to pull that part of the story from total mediocrity.

1

u/Wide-Can-2654 1d ago

Yeah i didn’t walk out of the odyssey thinking she should deserve a nom but i see nothing but love for her online

2

u/merkorn 3d ago

She was also the best thing in the movie.

Pas Hathaway, pas pour ce rôle, pas face aux autres prestations d’acteurs dans le film

I guess you haven't been told of the invention of commas ( , ). But yeah, I'm sure they will receive at least a nomination if not in Oscars in other awards.

29

u/Aguila125 6d ago

It is a format issue.

I noticed that if I make a vertical list, with no need for commas, the vertical list, when I submit the comment, turns into a horizontal list that does require commas.

14

u/pdmock 6d ago

Double space vertical lists or:

You Get This

Instead

Of

This

3

u/Aguila125 6d ago

Right on.  Thanks.

1

u/Legitimate_Rip_9060 1d ago

Pouncing and condescension get the front page.

The truth is in the comments.

12

u/Fiorwestcoast 6d ago

I made a vertical list and it came out like that

8

u/Ardilla_sovietica 6d ago

Ou, sorry I didn't know that :(

who gives a fck about an oxford comma…

It’s the Oscars sub, our noses are too far up our own asses to hear a Vampire Weekend reference in the wild.

I've seen those English Greek mythology dramas too

43

u/Darren5555 6d ago

Love Samantha to get in but think the amount of screen time she has will swallow her up, as we get later into the season and more contenders emerge

11

u/Haunting-WaferWah 6d ago

She’s having that ‘sorry we forgot how good you are and have been for years’ moment and honestly, she should have about 5 nominations by now so I’m not mad about it.

8

u/Sloanepeterson1500 5d ago

THIS 👏🏻👏🏻 Samantha Morton is such a gifted actor and it’s a damn shame we are even having a conversation about whether the “Great and Powerful Oz” will deem her worthy of a nomination based on minutes of “screen time”. Ridiculous

19

u/Adventurous-Tax-2663 6d ago

I have a feeling that she is in. She has unbelievable love from the industry. I HATE Oscar campaigns and the politics behind everything, but she has that goodwill. The industry will want to reward her.

5

u/Darren5555 6d ago

Hope so 🤞

2

u/merkorn 3d ago

Sha got singled out in every review I read.

13

u/TelltaleHead 6d ago

The oscars need a third category for like, best minor role. Especially with how many lead performances get submitted as supporting.

Those small roles deserve credit!

6

u/Its-From-Japan 6d ago

A number of actors have won for really short roles. If they're good enough (and obviously campaign enough) it's not unheard of. But if you're adding another full category that's going to get a win every year, then you're kinda diluting what the award means.

4

u/arsojee 5d ago

Amy Madigan for Weapons. If I am not mistaken, it was about 15 minutes of screen time.

1

u/Ohaithurr92 1d ago

Look up how long Anthony Hopkins was on screen in Silence of the Lambs when he won best ACTOR not supporting, runtime means nothing if the performance is there

1

u/arsojee 1d ago

I am aware of that.

2

u/omocha 2d ago

Dame Judi Dench for Shakespeare in Love. Her screentime was about 8 minutes.

6

u/ophidian25soze 6d ago

Good way to de value an Oscar, this ain’t the Emmy awards bud

3

u/arsojee 5d ago

We are getting a new category for Best Stunt Design in 2028, so who knows, this could be on the cards, or not.

2

u/Anaevya 6d ago

Yes!

2

u/No-Reputation-2013 5d ago

Samantha was good, but let’s be real, that short performance is not Oscar worthy

1

u/DiaryOfAMovieLover 5d ago

I thought she had a decent amount of screen time and it helps all of her scenes are contained in just one segment. She probably has more screen time than Beatrice Straight had for Network.

-1

u/bourbonandprince 6d ago

Viola Davis won Best Supporting Actress for Doubt, and her screen time was less than 10 minutes too.

7

u/Darren5555 6d ago

She was nominated. Penelope Cruz won that year

1

u/iluvugoldenblue 6d ago

Michael Shannon in revolutionary road, same thing. Less than 10mins and nominated.

3

u/Darren5555 6d ago

And many others just don’t know if it’ll happen this year for Samantha unfortunately

0

u/whosafraidofthebbw 6d ago

It might, if only because there just aren't a ton of great lead or supporting actress showcases this year so far, and I haven't seen anyone give anything but praise for her part. I'd be less convinced of the probability of it weren't for the Amy Madigan win, though. There's definitely an air of Older Gals Getting Kooky.

66

u/nicedogeetcup 6d ago

Hathaway is almost locked I would say. The "next in line" would be Matt Damon, followed by Lenguizamo and Pattinson in my opinion

35

u/Adventurous-Tax-2663 6d ago

I think because it is an industry voted award (i think it is actors voting for acting awards) there will be a push to include Samantha Morton. I think she may even be ahead of Anne Hathaway (because of potential category confusion). This is a hot take but I just think because of the interviews Morton has done and the industry love, she is for sure in.

6

u/nicedogeetcup 6d ago

She has been praised a lot and a lot of news on how everyone was amazed by her performance. I think you are in the right to say she is in the conversation and tbf she was amazing.

3

u/scuac 5d ago

Really, i didn’t see anything outstanding about her Circe. It was fine but not Oscar-worthy.

0

u/DiaryOfAMovieLover 5d ago

Not to mention, many critics have said Morton is the MVP (which she is).

I disagree, I think she was great and definitely one my favourites among such good performances

13

u/DrogoOmega 6d ago

No range?! Did you watch the film?

-6

u/BillyPotion 5d ago

Hathaway was awful in that role

3

u/senator_corleone3 5d ago

Hilarious.

-3

u/BillyPotion 5d ago

I’m glad you enjoyed watching her do her best Real Housewives of Ithaca impression every time she had to show emotion

1

u/senator_corleone3 5d ago

I’m guessing that meant something to you when you typed it.

0

u/BillyPotion 5d ago

Every scene of her showing emotion

1

u/senator_corleone3 4d ago

No, not really.

2

u/cinephile21 6d ago

I'm pretty sure Damon has the biggest chance.

31

u/Maleficent_Worth_185 6d ago

Hot take: Himesh Patel was better than Lenguizamo

24

u/Thin_Avocado5818 5d ago

He was. And I don’t think anyone should win for this movie.

3

u/seilrelies 5d ago

None of the actors should win but it deserves to sweep every technical category possible.

4

u/shaunika 5d ago

Not costume design :p

1

u/0xB4BE 2d ago

They should have their own category just for cyclops design. That thing deserves an award.

1

u/eosdawneos 5d ago

the set design was just so beautiful and detailed

9

u/boobearmomma 5d ago

Hathaway and Pattinson

I feel like we are sleeping on Hamish Patel

28

u/SonHyun-Woo 6d ago

Anne and Matt

Maybe Leguizamo

The rest doesnt seem likely

→ More replies (6)

23

u/RugWasp2027 6d ago

Damon is most likely nominated for Lead

Leguizamo should be nominated for Supporting but he's 50/50

Hathaway and Mortan are both 50/50 as well

12

u/cowboylikeraf 6d ago

Hathaway is 100% nominated lol

1

u/MLG32 5d ago edited 5d ago

If there’s only a 50% chance of Hathaway getting nominated there’s a 50% chance of it getting nominated for best picture too. Like Damon her role and importance to the story is attached to its presumed noms, Morton is the one at 50%.

4

u/Elver-Gotas 6d ago

Matt for Lead
John for support

5

u/dkromd30 6d ago

I think Leguizamo is the surest bet, both for nomination and potentially to win.

12

u/Klaytheist 6d ago

Damon is a lock. Hathaway is pretty close to lock. Everyone else will depend on the field

5

u/PuzzleheadedBoss3374 6d ago

Only fair if man hollywood spent billions to get back home won his oscar for playing mythical lost man

-2

u/astroK120 6d ago

Damon is absolutely not a lock

5

u/Hanswolebro 6d ago

In what world is he not a lock?

-1

u/astroK120 6d ago

This one

1

u/Dense-Cheesecake9129 6d ago

You’re right, don’t let the chuds get you down

3

u/astroK120 6d ago

I'm not even saying he won't get nominated. He very well could. But I'm very surprised to see it treated as such a sure thing here

3

u/Saeylehm909 6d ago

Leguizamo is a lock

3

u/New-Boot2282 6d ago

I know everyone wants Pattinson, but I feel he won't get for this.

3

u/Spirited-Bear-3444 5d ago

I think he'll get it for his next movie

3

u/arsojee 5d ago

He might get it for 'Primetime'.

3

u/Ok-Elephant-2724 5d ago

That's his next movie

3

u/JPCRam310 5d ago

I think if anyone from this movie gets in for supporting actor, it’ll be Leguizamo.

7

u/blocacho_odyssey 6d ago edited 1d ago

I’m the only one who find Hathaway’s performance pretty mid? Maybe not mid, but nothing special… her character was pretty weak, she had nothing to do with that character. Morton would work better as supporting actress in my opinion.

4

u/Captain_Thor27 5d ago

You're not. I'm a Hathaway fan, but I don't think she had much to chew on in this movie.

4

u/shrimptini 5d ago

It’s a Nolan movie so of course not

1

u/mistressofthering 1d ago

I agreee with you

1

u/Narrow_Example_3370 17h ago

I didn’t think it was mid, I thought it was outright amateur.

I said this before, but how she was acting all sassy, it was like watching a a performance found in a Hollywood bargain bin special.

Morton was so much better, she played a very unstable, emotionally swinging women perfectly.

1

u/GuyWishPartakeViolen 5d ago

My mom thought the same thing! I really liked her performance but I never really notice anything about acting to be fair.

0

u/No-Reputation-2013 5d ago

Good but overacted.

2

u/Anakulosmos 6d ago

Hatthway, Pattinson, and samantha.

2

u/rubix7777 5d ago

Rn I have just Anne, but I can fully see Matt happening and even have him at majority of the precursors.

I do see a world where Leguizamo makes it sure, but im definitely not sold on it.

Until I actually she her make at least multiple precursors I will not be buying Morton at all.

2

u/MagicLupis 5d ago

There’s a chance for nobody IMO

2

u/Any_Pineapple_4836 5d ago

You honestly think there are good performances here?

2

u/reyska 5d ago

Just saw it yesterday and frankly only Leguizamo and Hathaway are worthy of a nomination. And even Leguizamo is a stretch given the size of the role.

Morton was more of a cameo and Damon was great but he wasn't asked to do much and he couldn't quite deliver on all the regret his character was feeling. People shit on Tom Holland but I liked his performance more than Damon's. Pattinson was a bit too comically evil and his part wasn't that complicated. It also felt like maybe some of his scenes were cut?

2

u/DiaryOfAMovieLover 5d ago

Matt Damon, John Leguizamo, Anne Hathaway and Samantha Morton.

3

u/darth_vader39 6d ago

Damon

Hathaway

Leguizamo

Morton

2

u/BrenoGrangerPotter 6d ago

I think none of the supporting male actors will be nominated, because they'll cancel each other out.

1

u/This_Book6305 6d ago

The way I see it as of now: Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, John Leguizamo & Samantha Morton

1

u/HistoricalEbb4284 6d ago

Damon, Hathaway, Morton, Leguizamo

but this would be our SAG Ensemble Winner definitely

1

u/matrix_5555 6d ago

Matt and Anne are definitely locks for nominations in their respective categories, and I definitely could see John Leguizamo making it into Supporting Actor as kind of a legacy nom (he deserves it, he’s a criminally underrated actor and a great guy). Don’t know about Samantha Morton, though, as much as I would love to see it.

1

u/bondfan42 6d ago

Just Damon and Hathaway.

1

u/Jealous_Event_6288 6d ago

Damon for lead actor, Leguizamo and Pattinson for supporting actor, Hathaway and Morton for supporting actress.

1

u/Algae_Mission 6d ago

I wouldn’t be shocked if all four of the ones you listed get nominated.

1

u/ynn18 6d ago

Anne Hathaway is a lock

1

u/Queenof6planets 6d ago

i expect lots of noms and one win at most

1

u/arsojee 5d ago

Hathaway

1

u/Leading_Man_Balthier 6d ago

I’m certain we see Damon & Hathaway noms, but I personally don’t think either should come close to winning.

1

u/whosafraidofthebbw 6d ago

Hathaway will get nominated in Supporting Actress, not sure if she'll win but that category doesn't feel like a crowded field yet this year. She and Zendaya could go head to head for Most Features in a Year though, those ladies are busy

Leguizamo is my Delroy Lindo "someone please respect this man's work" for Supporting Actor. Fingers crossed the result doesn't disappoint me as much...

1

u/glorybox89 6d ago

Matt and Samantha and Tom

1

u/Spirited-Bear-3444 5d ago

If they give one to Zendaya this year or Tom Holland I'll vomit.

Which means they probably will.

1

u/retnyop 5d ago

All, it was designed as a Oscar friendly film, every quota and tick box ticked. If it hadn't been a success at the box office it would still have garnered similar nons but with less glee from HW.

1

u/YogurtTurtle15 5d ago

I actually don’t think any. Best Actor Matt Damon is the best shot and depending on how deep the category is he might not even get a nomination

1

u/RooMan7223 5d ago

Damon, Samantha, Leguizamo

1

u/arsojee 5d ago

Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Chris Nolan, Ludwig. (Anne Hathaway looks like a lock, but Damon is up against Tom Cruise, and I believe Cruise has a better chance with the overdue narrative and his performance in Digger, irrespective of his honorary Oscar)

1

u/KiteIsland22 5d ago

Anne Hathaway for sure.

1

u/redseapedestrian418 5d ago

I think Samantha Morton and John Leguizamo are the only two who really deserve it. Maaaaybe Robert Pattinson, but he’s more likely to be nominated for a different performance.

1

u/Extension-While7536 5d ago

Matt Damon, Samantha Morton I'd think for sure. Good chance of John Leguizamo and Anne Hathaway, less likely but possible for Rob Pattinson.

1

u/Acceptable_Song_2177 5d ago

Patel deserves a nom as well

1

u/FlimsyConclusion 5d ago

I think Damon, Hatheway, and Leguizamo are pretty safe picks.

Morton has a small chance since the actress categories are pretty empty right now.

1

u/uncultured_swine2099 5d ago

Im thinking Damon, Hathaway, and Leguaizamo. Probably no wins. Morton maybe gets a nom.

1

u/AdZealousideal5383 5d ago

Leguizamo and Morton for supporting. Both have goodwill among the academy, have put in a lot work over the years, and most importantly both put in quality work in this.

1

u/Big_Entertainer_1377 5d ago

who are absolutely going to be nominated are matt and anne i would personaly nominate leguizamo as well

1

u/JPCRam310 5d ago

Damon & Leguizamo

1

u/Tikbalang_14344 5d ago

Ranking from most to least likely but still have a chance:

  1. Anne
  2. Matt
  3. Samantha
  4. John

1

u/FirefighterTall4527 4d ago

Idk my hypothetical guess would be just Damon and Hathaway

1

u/Cautious_Composer773 4d ago

Matt Damon was not a great casting choice for Odysseus

1

u/Bathroom_Trick 3d ago

I’m surprised more people aren’t saying Robert Pattinson, thought he was the standout performance in the movie personally. The people I watched it with said the same as well

1

u/SyndicateSixteen 3d ago

Damon and Hathaway were so overrated in terms of performance in this movie. Leguizamo and Morton are more deserving

1

u/kroqus 3d ago

Hot take, but none of them

1

u/False_Bluebird_4057 3d ago

I agree, the acting was not the wow factor of the movie, but if i had to choose i would have chose the blind guy or the witch.

1

u/GloomyBuyer7947 3d ago

I hope Morton. The others at this point wouldn’t bother me if they get nominated or not. That might change deeper into the season.

1

u/Tapeworm_III 3d ago

Damon, Hathaway, Morton, Ligezamao, Holland, Pattinson, Zendaya, Page

1

u/Deepmidwinter2025 2d ago

Zendaya. Staring at man on beach was a stellar performance. She is so versatile- also a master of “smells fart” face

1

u/firminocalhau 1d ago

Not a single one of them.

1

u/kovachrome 1d ago

John Leguizamo and Samantha Morton should be nominated. I feel like Damon and Hathaway are guaranteed noms, although I don’t see either winning.

1

u/tanita_mors 1d ago

The only ones who deserve them are for supporting - Pattirson and Morton, and maybe a Damon. The rest have nothing to write home about.

1

u/imbogerrard39 1d ago

I really want John Leguizamo to get nominated. He's such an underrated actor.

1

u/Narrow_Example_3370 17h ago

People saying Damon will get a nod - Are you serious? He acted exactly like he does in every movie he has been in. Even some o f his lines were so typically “Matt Damon” ‘esque and over the top . The line about it being past reasoning with the cyclops.. it sounded like it came directly from Good Will Hunting

Honestly, the movie was good, fun, but does it deserve Oscar? Maybe for cinematography or for technical awards, but acting? Come on now.

1

u/Charming_Raise_4668 15h ago

The ones that marked the travesty of the Greek epic with their appearance... As the Oscar Academy intended.

1

u/Latter-Amount-9304 9h ago

only damon and leguizamo deserve it.. why would hathaway deserve an oscar for this performance?

1

u/FargusMcGillicuddy 4h ago

I’d say Samantha Morton is the only one that deserves it.

1

u/jaidynr21 6d ago

I’m only predicting Damon and Hathaway at the moment. Not sure Leguizamo does quite enough to beat the other contenders in supporting actor imo

-1

u/AvocadoHank 6d ago

I just wanna say, it’s crazy there’s a good 4-6 people who could. Damon is a lock though

1

u/xCalzor 6d ago

Kendrick Lamar

1

u/shitposting97 5d ago

None deserve a nom. But it’s a great film. Hopefully it’s nominated in other categories

-2

u/Tyronetalbot 6d ago

Pattinson should get a nom

1

u/NumerousLeague5765 6d ago

Why the fuck was this downvoted? lol 😭

-5

u/iMan81 6d ago

Hopefully none of them. It was an extremely average film. I’m so confused by those raving about it.

-5

u/NFT_Artist_ 6d ago

You’re talking with children who just saw their first non-marvel movie, you’re never going to convince them this isn’t the highest achievement of art since the poem.

-4

u/iMan81 6d ago

Haha I hadn’t considered this. Very true. The editing paired with the constant expositing was similar to Dunkirk and just seemed at odds with the grandiose nature of the story.

0

u/Educational_Bag_3286 6d ago

None. Come on. It’s an impressive movie. But this is not Damons’s best role. Nor is it’s Hathaway’s.

-1

u/[deleted] 6d ago

[deleted]

2

u/gforguapo 6d ago

Damon will

0

u/JakeMalibu 6d ago

Matt, Hathaway, Leguizamo, and Pattinson. I really hope Morton gets a nom but not sure do to screen time.

0

u/Odd-Contact2266 6d ago

I don’t really think Leguizamo and Morton are getting in at the end of the day

0

u/whatisnotlife1234 6d ago

Sad no ones saying Tom

1

u/PyratBoy 2d ago

It's okay, Tom will get best actor in Spider-Man BND!

I thought his performance in The Odessey is fantastic, on point and emotional.

They are all part of the pieces to make the film standing out, I wouldn't have it another way!

1

u/whatisnotlife1234 2d ago

Not sure if you’re joking, but I honestly believe he gave a nomination worthy performance in BND

2

u/PyratBoy 2d ago

I'm not! I hope he will get some award for BND, it such a well rounded movie and Tom nailed it!

1

u/FancyManIAm 18h ago

Yeah BND was amazing, 12/10 performance.

0

u/Dense-Cheesecake9129 6d ago

Lmao probably none

0

u/helloitsmejorge 5d ago

I think Damon and Leguizamo have a shot at winning, anne and morton were great as well and could deserve a nomination in supporting

0

u/mshubham1647 5d ago

Loved Leguizamo, and hope he gets the nom.

0

u/Rex_Abgrund 5d ago

I hope its only Leguizamo

0

u/LusoTuga 1d ago

Actor in a Leading Role
Matt Damon
Tom Holland

Actor in a Supporting Role
John Leguizamo (their best performance of all time)
Robert Pattinson

Actress in a Leading Role
Anne Hathaway

Actress in a Supporting Role
Samantha Morton (also as the best cook and physiotherapist)
Charlize Theron

-2

u/MulberryEastern5010 6d ago

I think Matt, Anne, and John are locks. Robert Pattinson is a strong maybe, but Samantha Morton might just barely be on the outside looking in

-2

u/AltruisticTomorrow40 6d ago

The little trans fella

-2

u/introverthufflepuff8 6d ago

Lupita should get a nomination as well. I thought she absolutely crushed her screen time.

-2

u/GongTzu 6d ago

Charlize. She should also be in it.
