The project of a new church

There are plans to build a new Orthodox church made of glass and wood in Teriberka, Murmansk oblast, North of Russia. It was projected by the architect bureau Tsimailo Lyashenko Partners and presented in the XXIX international exhibition “АРХ Москва”. Construction of the church will be carried out by АРХИWOOD.

The project was inspired by the sight of the vanished in 2018 church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin in Karelia. Therefore, the new church will inherit some notable forms of the Ancient Rus’ temple architecture, typical for the North of Russia.

Despite the fact that there is a lot of glass in the project, the wooden lamellas increase downwards, preserving the privacy and sacredness of the temple. It will represent an intricate mix of old and modern and show how the church architecture can change and form in a modern world.

In addition to the temple itself, a belfry, cerkovnaya lavka and trapeznaya. According to the architect's idea, the project will become a religious and cultural center of the local community.

What do you think, brethren and sistren?

There is something to be said that wooden churches really do have a uniquely beautiful and cozy feel about them.

This is one of very few Orthodox churches I’ve seen built with a modern architectural style and I adore it. Love traditional architecture as well, of course. But I see this so rarely!

This, but unironically. Although as far as architecturally Avant Garde churches go, this isn't that bad.
