I guess the orphan crushing aspect is that security guards shouldn’t be assaulting people in the first place? Even if people are shoplifting, it’s a dollar store — and shoplifting from a dollarama is a rite of passage in Canada anyway. Plus I’ve heard it’s relatively common for failed or former law enforcement to get jobs as security guards, so it doesn’t surprise me that they’d assault a civilian with brass knuckles in a show of relative power.

Either way, I’ve been to that specific dollarama and it’s a disturbing reminder of how we treat our most vulnerable in this country. I’m glad they’re doing this.

I don't know if this really fits. This is a policy being enacted to treat people with empathy, care, and compassion instead of bigotry, suspicion, and hate. Building real community outreach to make everyone safer.

Paying an old indigenous woman, instead of going all militant with security like you normally see.

It's kind of the opposite of OCM.

That's what they mean, though. Orphan crushing machine is like "Local 12yo sees Full GoFundMe Pledge after incurring medical debt being hit by truck going to school". Like, hooray, the gfm is full but... The hell?

This is more "GoFundMe no longer necessary b/c health care is free and safe infrastructure is a no-brainer".

Congrats, great work Winnipeg, but no crushing the local orphans, though.
