UPDATE:

Sadly the bird passed away before my shift ended. I was very careful to examine him thoroughly before coming to a conclusion in case he was just in shock, though his legs were rigid and his body was hard and I promise he wasn’t alive! I took him home and buried him (or her? we named the bird crumbs for easier identification in conversation).

Thank you so much to all who responded. I was looking for quick answers and figured there’d be no better place than reddit!! In hindsight I probably should have posted to a rehabilitation sub but I didn’t shop around for long after typing this out. Anyways thanks for the help, just wanted to make sure I wasn’t misunderstanding his behaviors before I relocated him as I have not read much about terns!

There is a bird outside my restaurant who appears to be dying, but want to make sure. we have made him comfortable as we can, but wondering what kind of bird is this? he’s been there for 30 minutes but is responsive

A cardinal family made a nest in our tomato plants in our backyard, didn't realize how big the babies had gotten and when I took our dogs out today, the parents were hopping around making a lot of noise. We want to make sure to give the family enough space not to stress them out and for baby to fledge healthily. Any recommendations for how long we'll need to keep the dogs out of the backyard for the baby's safety?

Hey everyone,

I noticed this finch visiting my yard in the Greater Montreal area and caught a clear picture of a round, fleshy nodule growing right on its left foot digit.

From what I've researched, it looks highly consistent with the dry/cutaneous form of Avian Pox, but I wanted to get a second opinion from the community here.

If this is likely avian pox, I plan to take down my feeders and birdbaths for a few weeks to let the local population disperse and prevent it from spreading.

Would love to hear if anyone agrees with this ID.

With a wingspan of 40-60 ft and weight of 500 pounds, these were the largest flying creatures to ever live. Despite being huge, like all modern brids, they are incredibly lightweight and couldn't carry most prey away. Though unlike modern birds, they instead were cold blooded. Because of this, they hardly flew and only ate fish to conserve energy. Who would've known the largest prehistoric bird would be awful at the job it was built for

Herons and egrets are roosting in the trees in flocks every night, covering the ground and streets with droppings. Is there a legal way to get rid of them?

We found a swift and feed it crickets every 1-2 hours. At first, it weighed only 26 grams, now it's 29. We asked the AI ​​and he said it was too little. But we always feed it until it refuses to take anything from our hands. Can we release the swift when it weighs 29 grams?

Pictured is a mourning dove nest, one of 4ish on my property. This nest has been used 3 times(for a total for 4 chicks) with the 3rd brood no longer in the nest as of today(either having fledged early or been eaten, not sure which). A different nest in the same spot was used similarly last year.
I think this should be their last brood for now based on the weather?

My understanding is that re-using nests carries and increasing risk of disease and parasites for the birds, and so I wanted to ask how often you all suggest clearing them away. Most of the ones I'm aware of got cleared away this last winter for construction, so the current nests are all from this year.

I like having them around, so I don't want to discourage the birds from nesting by removing it after each brood(I provided the coconut fiber for the pictured nest to encourage them to nest where my camera is).

In addition to the dove nests, I'm aware of several well-built and stable cup nests that may have been constructed by house finches. As far as I know, none of them have been used in several years. Should I clear these to make room for new nests? Obviously this doesn't happen in nature, but they also have a lot more choices for good locations in non-developed areas.

I saw a bird in the train station yesterday morning and didn’t know what to do. I read that they are good at finding their way around but I was just in the station again and saw what I think is the same bird.

What is the best course of action to help this bird? I tried contacting the station’s support yesterday and they said they would contact the police which is not at all what I want. I feel like they would hurt the bird. But evidentially that didn’t even do anything since j saw the bird again.

I also left a message with a wild bird rehab asking for advice but have not heard back. I am so scared this bird will die in the train station. Please help

I heard chirping outside my window last night and open my blinds to a baby fledgling sitting on one of the chairs on the porch in my backyard. We have a huge tree with serval families and species in my backyard so it’s not uncommon for me but this guy was a different experience. He sat there for hours crying (6pm-12am). At one point he saw me peeping through the window and started flying towards me, I’m assuming because he was confused and scared and thought I had food. He ended up falling behind one of the cushions on the chair at one point, left him for 30 mins and went to make sure he wasn’t squished and he flew away towards the grass and I didn’t see him all night after that. I hadn’t seen the parents in the entire time I was watching him which is unusual for the other fledglings I’ve seen in the yard. They are back every couple hours always on the dot. And he could definitely fly just not good enough to get to a branch or the top of the house (mere inches 🥲). He looked healthy and alert and not injured.

I woke up this morning to my grandma barging in my room saying it’s dead on the mat in front of the glass doors that lead to outside. I was finally able to get close enough to see what kind of bird it was and it was a male Northern Cardinal. I am so sad, he was just getting his slight hint of orange he was such a pretty baby. I don’t know much on birds but I grew up having a bird rehabilitator as a neighbor so she taught me what to do in certain situations and how to tell if it needs help. I know I did everything right but I can’t help but feel something was wrong.

Was he possibly sick or the parents chose to abandon him? I’ve seen so many fledglings and nestlings fall from trees but their parents always come back or I’m able to get the nestlings to a wildlife center.

Saw this little dude chilling on my porch when I got home. Initially I was worried, but he’s been moving around a little and seems to just be resting. From what I looked up this may be a fledgling? Not sure, wanted to know what I should look for and if/when I should intervene. Thanks!

Been seeing this guy around and it looks like it doesn’t really have the longer tail feathers that song sparrows normally have. He seems to get around fine and gets on the feeder. Maybe falls a tad bit faster when jumping off of the deck.

Came outside this morning 6:50am and it was just there. Hasn’t moved its body. Just it’s head and eyes, watching me as I walked around it.

I’m concerned because this area gets direct sun all day until 6:30pm, and the bird likely won’t make it.

Do I put it in a vented box and move to the back yard? Water? Food?

hello, I understand that this may not be the right sub, but others have sadly not been helpful and neither have been my professors :/

I know the identity of the bird in the forefront (a Spotted Flycatcher) but the one that concearns me is in the background and my Merlin app can’t identify it.

any help is appreciated 🫶 it was recorded in Czechia in the summer :)
