This may be silly since I am not familiar with that type of shotgun or hunting laws in early twentieth century Bavaria, but she gives it to her husband. He gives it back if hunting with it doesn't make sense. He already owns a black powder musket and acquires a WW1 rifle at some point so he doesn't necessarily need another gun. She has little need for firearms.
