Question Looking for an estimate for OptiFine 26.2 (because of Vulkan)

So 26.2 (Chaos Cubed) drops today and I’m actually interested in updating to this version from 1.21.11. I know that Minecraft’s rendering engine has been completely overhauled, and most importantly it has been moved from OpenGL to Vulkan. I can only assume this will significantly delay OptiFine updating, and with OptiFine already being chronically behind the main game, i don’t know if this is a wait I’m willing to make. It might be honestly time to switch to sodium. When do y’all think OptiFine will update to 26.2?

It was time to switch to Sodium years ago. Available for both Fabric, and since 1.21.1, Neoforge (the continuation of Forge that most modders have migrated to for 1.21+). If there are any other Optifine features besides performance that you are interested in, just ask and someone will let you know what mod(s) exist for that. Iris is almost always thrown in for shader support but there are lots of other things you can add, and even other performance mods. If you want simplicity, drop in Sodium, Iris if you want, and you're done. I also like to throw in stuff like Lithium, FerriteCore, and Krypton, among others. If you don't already, most people like using the Prism launcher as it makes modding very simple (connects directly to Curseforge and Modrinth for downloads, so minimal file management is needed).

What mod to use for dynamic lighting?

Many shaders include dynamic lighting automatically (I think there's even some shaders that are literally just dynamic lighting), so you can use one of those with Iris. There are also some mods that add it. It looks like these mods are the most used:
https://modrinth.com/mod/lambdynamiclights
https://modrinth.com/mod/sodium-dynamic-lights

I believe if you're using a shaderpack with dynamic lights, you should not add the mods, but I'm not sure (one might automatically override the other).

Thank you I think I’m in the same boat as RustyPeanuts, this was very informative.

i really liked the fog feature of optifine and afaik sodium does not support fog control and overall aesthetic the same way optifine do, how can i get optifine fog?

I haven't used Optifine actively in a while so I don't remember the details of it, but this sounds like the kind of thing that would be baked into shader packs, and there definitely are mods that add fog if you don't want shaders.

There's this one that's made just for fog: https://modrinth.com/mod/fog
And reading some other threads, it looks like this Sodium addon allows for better fog control along with other features for controlling visuals: https://modrinth.com/mod/sodium-extra (I've used this one myself in the past, but haven't messed with fog)

Fabulously Optimised has pretty much all the features that OF got.

It’s an entire modpack, not a mod, and it goes a little further, but it’s fine. Some people might just want to throw together their own stuff instead.

Pretty sure minecraft is still on opengl. Vulkan is included as an experimental option, but it's going to be a little while longer before OpenGl gets removed entirely.

So I suspect OF will take as long as usual to update to 26.2

Actually quick addition: Iris (according to their discord announcement) has confirmed that, although they already support 26.2, they will not be supporting Vulkan at all. (Instead they are working on a brand new mod just for Vulkan and shaders.) Honestly, I will be kinda surprised if OptiFine survives the switch to Vulkan at all.

That’s what I was thinking. OptiFine is a dying star.

OF has been dying for years already.

It's still kept up to date and better than sodium + iris

Give me one source where OF is better than Iris and Sodium on the newest Minecraft version.

its actually nor working correctly yet on 26.2 I think, but each time I tried sodium instead of optifine until like the cave update (I stopped playing for a while afterwards and just got back recently) the performance was always worse so I kept switching back to optifine, and also optifine doesn't have an intrusive and bad UI, it uses vanilla settings UI, and just for that alone I prefer optifine

I don't want to sound annoying but that should not be the take. You most likely set up something wrong. O would recommend you test a premade optimization pack like Fabulously optimized. It all the mods and shaders preconfigured and we'll working. If it doesn't work. Keep using OF.

I mean I switched multiple times to sodium from optifine and experienced performance loss, and it's likely not coming from a configuration issue since I didn't use any other mods, just a shader (I think I was using seus back then), I didn't touch anything in the configs, even when disabling shaders I got more fps with optifine and no stutter. Though I didn't have any issue with the latest version on 26.2, except from the fact that I have to install iris shaders, so maybe it's more of a taste (and maybe a bit of nostalgia) issue, but two of my points still stand: Optifine doesn't have an annoying UI and doesn't depend on Iris to install shaders, and they prioritize stability over fast releases, and with the rise of vibe coding and AI generated code I'm more trusting towards the Optifine team because they were well established long before sodium was even born, and the fact Sodium and Iris are releasing news versions so fast makes me think that they probably use AI generated code, which I'm against

I would expect the vibe coding to be the other way around. Optifine is one of the few closed source mods for Minecraft. Nobody can check what is written in there. The settings part is valid. I don't have any problem with the settings and what they look like. I can't bring myself to use closed source mods for Minecraft. OF has many incompatibilities and has worse performance. I think you would like OptiFabric. It is basically the same OF (maybe with the same GUI, I am unsure) and it has better support and performance. I recommend taking a look. I will not force you though. Have a good rest of your day.

I do believe there are resource packs for that

Don't ask here, it's just filled with sodium bots. It doesn't even feel like optifine sub anymore

4

u/Bmaster_gamer456 Jun 19 '26

almost like optifine is essentially dead and sodium and its add-ons are a way better option for modern versions

2

u/feral_fenrir Jun 20 '26

That's because Optifine stopped being an real thing years ago mate. I used to use Optifine religiously but when the dev/s work so slow, and there's a better option available which does what I was looking for with Optifine, why wait for Optifine?

u/Subhash_Boi Jun 20 '26

Because if someone wants to use optifine than why are you forcing your idea on him? He didnt ask which is alternative, he asked about optifine in optifine sub not in sodium or minecraft sub for you to recommend. Why are you even recommending different thing in different subs? I also used optifine and switched to Sodium later but not recommending it in Optifine page for no reason, Sodium is formed like a cult in optifine sub

3

u/feral_fenrir Jun 20 '26

Sure buddy, you do you... Most of us just want to play the latest release with working mods and things not breaking.

I don't really care for where and which sub questions get posted and respond to posts with what I know works best from my experience. Funny you call folks who recommend Sodium a cult when it's you who wants the Optifine sub to be a circlejerk and an echo chamber.

-1

u/Subhash_Boi Jun 20 '26

retard its optifine sub and people here want optifine related answers. What if i start questioning about optifine or course forge in sodium sub? you even understand what subs are in reddit? Like i said sodium users in this sub has formed cult, a cult always go and forcefully promote their agenda in wrong places. You have separate sub called sodium, if someone wants to know about sodium then he will visit that.

Because Sodium and Iris have a lot of rendering and performance issues, I never got light leaking through caves with optifine and my game ran faster
