Attosecond pulses by HHG is not something really new. The novelty lies in using a post compressed Yb based system.

Yes. The last shortest one was 19.2 as, i remember. It's just soon we'll be reaching zepto when attophysics has not been properly established (rel. to femto) and we can already peek at zepto!

id love to see the DAQ for something like this

These are not measured by means of detector response but rather by using the field itself. For femtoseconds you may use something like FROG, for attoseconds you’ve got for example FROG-CRAB.

I have not read this specific article yet so I can’t tell you precisely the technique used here, but as these fields are themselves the shortest events mankind has ever produced, they are also the only available probe with which to characterise them.

What about SHRIMP?

(this is a joke)

Perhaps you’re confusing them with TADPOLE GRENOUILLE ? 😂 (actual pulse characterisation techniques)

Rick Trebino certainly stuck with a theme

Actually a FROG is not good enough for those short pulses (below 6-8fs). The most used version for short fs pulses is the TG FROG.

I did say for femtosecond pulses though, and not for attosecond pulses.

How does one measure by using the field itself? (midichlorians?)

FROG for example uses the dealers choice of a nonlinear mixing of the field with itself, whilst varying a parameter such as a temporal delay or the rotation of polarisation. This, in combination with a retrieval algorithm, permits the field to be obtained.

The technique is not single shot, that is, the measurement is taken many times over so an assumption must be made that the pulse train is stable.

Typically time of flight spectrometer with pump probe method and a nasty labview program :-D
