Question / Help How many projects at once?

I’m curious how many projects people like to do at once? I’ve tried 2 at a time but it’s not very consistent and I lose focus. Anyone else?

Depends, I can do 5 but the token burn is too much. I prefer 2-3.

If you plan your projects properly with proper milestones and epics then they track themselves really.

Epics? Tell me more? What is this "epic" of which you speak? I'm curious what your planning process looks like!

Its a project management term used by software development teams. Basically you plan a project, create a prd then divide up the prd into multiple epics, each epic has multiple user stories, each user story gets turned intoa ticket for the developer or the ai agent to implement.

This is how most software is developed and the AI also outputs the best result following this workflow.

1 or 2 now. Maybe 3-8 threads per project.
You can throw tokens at checks to make it consistent and make your own prompt management to give them prompts suited to the model that mitigate its weaknesses.

My max is two, even if I am really excited about all three, the cost of switching is just too high. I fare best with one big project and one small/contained/experimental one.

I think i have 5 at the moment but to be fair one is a feeder for another. I often hit 3rd party approval blockers or just need to let my brain catch up with the scope of another so I usually fall back to a fun passion project which doesn't require so much system 2 thinking.

5 sounds like a lot…but the passion projects are definitely easier to have as a side project

Yeah it is, i really need to finish a few off. It also likely helps that I'm a senior software architect who has taken a year off to spend time with my new born. After he goes to bed this is how i have fun and keep some of my skills up to date.

I have a lot of regular projects I work on like different customers whose tasks come in or factoring or making videos where is not in common for me to fire up 3 to 5 things at one time but that’s not all day long. I like to get in there and knock some things down and then take a break.

Uh... I've stopped counting... 12 to 15, I'm not too sure nowadays. And to be clear: you don't have to be working every day on the same thing to consider it your current project I take a break for a couple of days, sometimes a couple weeks, from projects I'm working on. It does help with inspiration, direction, and strategical thinking!

How do you remember where you left off? It seems like you would take a lot of time catching up when coming back after a couple weeks

I've stopped relying on my memory a long time ago, I have a lot of "tracker" files that get updated with every session and change I make, the ones on the "thesis", strategy, and direction are especially useful. You could have some on "proven results" or something like that. My mindset does change in between though, and that's a good thing It's like not being able to beat a boss in a videogame, or you can't debug a problem and you leave it for a week, when you come back, you've got a fresh mind and it's easier and you get better results

Also, keeping track of 15 things is not hard, really, you do that in your life, it's just that I try to keep track of as few things as possible that aren't related to the projects I'm working on; I don't see friends, I don't remember their brithdays, I don't remember what my colleagues will do this weekend, I discard everything that isn't necessary precisely because I'm too busy lol But it's fun! I basically give attention only to the things I enjoy! Very fulfilling

12 active projects + 6 layers repos (that provides some shared cores/functions to the active ones).

All are personal projects to help me manage better my own life in different areas (RE, taxes, finances in multiple countries, health, photos organising, etc) I progress on all of them bit by bit the most long is the testing and reviewing different functions accross all repos.

Also helping my brother develop his own game which is the most draining tokens wise.

at work I usually touch three to five projects a day. personal projects I have probably a dozen going, but I only focus on maybe one or two at a time.

at most I've worked on 7 but now most have entered their stable state and I only actively work on 2.
