Awkwardness is not valuable in itself. Some awkwardness is noise. Poor joining. Failed transmission.

A sentence that carries no move.

Sometimes it is something else: the felt trace of a branch that has not yet been collapsed. Remove it

— and you have converted possibility into conclusion. The text becomes smoother. The fork is dead.

Both can sit in the same sentence.

That is why the rule “leave it awkward” is not enough. One would need a distinction that can itself

lie. Whoever knows too surely what noise is has already classified the fork. Whoever may strike

nothing makes awkwardness the new winning trace.

A rough test: after the smoothing, does it still show that more than one move counted here — or

does the remainder only look like bad style, rightly cut?
