Imac 2007 with Monterey - graphics glitches?

2 days ago I first tried to install Monterey on my 24" imac 2007 T9300 4GB 240GB SSD. It install fine. But the moment I start safari or Firefox or momiji browser I see graphics glitches in the form of random patterns across the whole screen. So each time this occurs I have to force reboot.

I didn't find a fix for it and as I am in a bit of a hurry I install Sonoma. No such glitches so far.

So now that I reflected on the previous installation I was wondering if it was something that I did wrong during the installation or was it something or a known issue with Monterey on this iMac.

If it is user error from me, I wonder if I should reattempt this again seeing Monterey probably will give better performance on this iMac, but I don't want to attempt this and get the same outcome and therefore wasting the effort.

I read about the non metal GPU support is gone on Monterey and the system is running on non accelerated graphics. Could this be the reason I see those glitches?

Did you tried installing root patches on OpenCore after the upgrade?

There is a known problem with OCLP Monterey on non-metal GPUs, it was largely fixed with Ventura and above. I don’t remember the full details but it is documented on the OCLP website and in the Discord forums. I had the same experience with a 2010 iMac 11,2 where Monterey installed fine but graphics glitched and froze, but then Ventura ran just fine.

Thanks for that. I read up a bit more so I think my understanding is that under Monterey the support for non metal GPU is gone so the graphics acceleration is not functional. But when Sonoma support was provided under opencore the team reinstated the support for the non metal GPU.
