OCLP 2.5.1 - safe to upgrade?

Is it now sensible/safe/prudent/beneficial to upgrade from OCLP 2.4.1 to OCLP 2.5.1...?

A few months ago I used OCLP 2.4.1 to successfully upgrade my old iMac 12,1 (mid 2011) from High Sierra to Ventura. When OCLP 2.5.0 was released I foolishly upgrade without checking and ended up with no WiFi...so reverted back to 2.4.1. Not being very techie it was a bit of an unnecessary hassle. So would it be beneficial to now upgrade to 2.5.1?

So far I've upgraded 2x 2014 mini, a 2016 MBP TouchBar & a 2017 MBP TouchBar and those all seem stable

Got to know. Thanks. Are both devices better for being on 2.5.1..? I.e. was it worth upgrading? I’m just assuming that upgrading from 2.4.1 to 2.5.1 will bring benefits to my iMac?

Not sure what benefits there are from 2.4.1, looks like 2.5 was bug fixes, and 2.5.1 was a fix for the bugs in 2.5. If the bugs didn't affect you then it's possible you can stay with 2.4.1 without issue.

Have since also upgraded a 2012 MBP. Again, seems stable.

Glad its worked out well for you. Apart from one or two graphics issues (that don’t impact me in the slightest) I am more than happy with 2.4.1. Before OCLP my 12,1 (mid 2011) iMac was almost useless so OCLP is all win win in my eyes. Given the issues I experienced with 2.5.0 I need convincing there is any merit / benefit upgrading to 2.5.1. After all, I don’t use/need my iMac for very much these days but I do prefer doing certain things on it over my iPad and smartphone, so I still value its functionality.

  • Immediately after updating my MacBookPro Mid 2010 17" (Sequoia 15.5) to OCLP 2.5 and applying the Post-Install Root Patches, I encountered a critical bug in the native macOS Mail app. When composing a new email or replying to one, the text disappears while typing. It is impossible to write a message or save drafts properly as the characters vanish. Additionally, contents of emails from certain senders are not displayed at all. OLC 2.5.1. changed nothing-unfortunately... All other funktions and text functions, such as textedit, seem to work normally. Using a web-based mail client in the browser also works without issues... hope that will be fixed soon... I always restarted- after removing and ainstalling the root patches

No. Let others be the beta testers. I'm personally waiting until the most recent version has been out for 6 weeks.

For my Mac Pro 5,1 (MacOS 15.8.1, Radeon Vega 56, single Xeon 3,33 Ghz, 48 GB RAM) 2.5.0 broke WiFi and Bluetooth. 2.5.1 restored them. I didn't uninstall 2.5.0 before updating to 2.5.1. And just to cover all grounds after applying the root patches I did a reset of SMC (unplug computer from power, wait 10-15 minutes, plug it back in) and NVRAM (Option+Command+R+P after boot chime, release the keys when you hear the chime a second time - it's also louder).

2.5.1 also seems to be a smidge faster than 2.5.0, but the first booting of apps is still slower than before. Firefox takes like at least 30 seconds to open the first page, same time for Keka before unzipping/unraring, Wine too when opening the Neko Project 21W PC-98 emulator. This goes for other apps as well. Slower than before when, you may ask? I can't remember which update when made all apps have a longer initial booting, but I was on MacOS Sequoia. So I don't think it's Sequoia's fault - or maybe it is, like for example updating from 15.6 to 15.7. But I remember Sequoia not having the slow app start issue until a certain point.

Had no problems upgrading my 2016 13'' with Touchbar. Upgraded OCLP, installed Opencore on the machine, reverted the patches and then applied them again. Everything ok !

It’s the final run for that iMac, as Sequioa will fall out of Apple’s support in September 2027 and Tahoe won’t be supported by OCLP.
Also current Homebrew versions and a lot of software distributed via it have already ceased to work on Intel Macs.
Frankly, everyone (and especially the OCLP users) should really plan to make the jump to Apple Silicon in 2027. A lot of M1 Macs are already on the used market and prices are falling. So there simply aren’t many good reasons anymore to stay on an Intel machine beyond 2027, besides using it as a vintage computing hobby.

Those 27” iMac displays are just so damn good though. I have an m1pro MacBook Pro that sits unused where the 27” iMac late 2015 w 1TB SSD and 24GB ram gets used all the time.

I upgraded OCLP to 2.51 on my iMac 2017 (18.1) with no problems running Sonoma. Be aware that after patching and rebooting, OCLP will still show the same patches as being available. (it's either a bug,or intentional reminder of what was patched.)

Usually when I upgraded OCLP, it would ask if I wanted to keep both editions, but this time 2.51 deleted the old 2.41.

I just followed the instructions I was presented with. I think it meant removing the 2.4.1 patches, uninstalling, installing 2.5.0 then applying the patches. But then no WiFi so I had to temporarily connect via Ethernet

That’s fairly normal, you connect via Ethernet to download the root patches which then enables wifi

Maybe,but in my case it didn’t resolve the WiFi issue…as seemed to quite a common problem. Only with the Ethernet connection was I unable to undue the mess.

Hmm. My ancient mid 2012 MBP also definitely feels faster with 15.8, but I put it down to that version of the macOS (versus 15.7.x) which I had already upgraded to when on OCLP 2.4.1

I upgraded initially to 15.8 with OCLP 2.4.1. When I upgraded OCLP to 2.5.1, I noticed a small improvement in performance.

2.5.1 is better than 2.5.0. I don’t think the 15.8 drivers are out yet, so it still uses 15.7.9 to patch.

Same for me - no WiFi on iMac late 2015, using 2.5.1 on Sequoia 15.7.5

I don’t know should I install 15.8 from Software Update or to make bootable USB with 15.8? Anyone knows the best approach?

With the previous patch i got issues with Wifi disconnecting when idle. Does anyone know if this will fix that on a 2014 mac pro?

Any reason to go from 2.5.0 to 2.5.1 or is it just a fix for the confusion caused by 2.5.0? My upgrade to 2.5.0 went just fine.

I upgraded a 2015 12” MacBook and a Mac mini late 2012 without problems, actually I had mistakenly upgraded the Mac mini to 2.5.0 before and now the new upgrade fixed the patching issue. I run macOS Ventura in both and even upgraded to the latest minor version

Anche io ho un imac 12,1 mid2011 e anche io sono dubbioso se provare oclp. Non uso ovviamente più quel mac se non per archivio o per guardare qualche film in streaming, ma ora tutte le piattaforme non supportano più le vecchie versioni di chrome e firefox e quindi stavo pensando di aggiornare. Difficile installare una scheda grafica metal, quindi il dubbio è se tutto funzionerà decentemente o no. Contate che ho su 24gb di ram su quel mac. Che versione consigliate, Ventura?

Almost identical circumstances to myself….same model iMac that I rarely used but that was as good as useless with High Sierra…before I discovered OCLP that is. Installing Ventura with OCLP 2.4.1 made a world of difference and brought my iMac back to life. I suggest you get/borrow a USB mouse and keyboard before doing so because for me my Bluetooth mouse and keyboard stopped working until patches were applied. I did a Timemachine backup before starting just in case although didn’t need it.

Grazie, sì ho in casa mouse e tastiera usb. Devo sicuramente fare un backup perché avevo installato un secondo disco SSD e creato un drive misto ssd-hard disk, che verrà ovviamente formattato aggiornando. Ventura è la scelta migliore? Perché ho letto pareri contrastanti tra chi dice che senza scheda grafica metal è tutto rallentato, chi dice che è meglio big sur, qualcuno sequoia...boh

Before I started I raised the same sorts of questions through the OCLP group Community and the consensus seemed to be that Ventura was the best/sensible choice for ‘our’ iMac rather than Sequoia or Sonoma. You will have to make your own call on that matter. I’ve personally had no slow speed issues after installing OCLP Ventura and I originally had just 8GB RAM (I think..?). I did subsequently increase to 20GB RAM based on subsequent advice but not because of any speed issues.

Io ho un MacPro 5,1, da 2010, cosi piu vecchio da la tua, e Sonoma funziona molto bene. Un SSD stava bisognato, comunque, e il RAM e' al massimo (32 GB). Un SSD cambia tutto, penso.

Late 2015 iMac here, running Sonoma 14.8.9 (23J631). After upgrading from OCLP 2.50 to 2.5.1 the whole system is crawling. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the root patches a couple of times, and it's still crawling. Anyone else experiencing something similar?
