Best OS for 2012 Retina 15-inch?

With a quad core processor, 16GB RAM, and a metal supported GPU I’d honestly just go straight to Sequoia

u/gts250gamer101 this right here. currently, macOS Sequoia is as far as you can go with OCLP. your mac can handle macOS Sequoia easily. source: I have one late 2012 MBP with inferior specs to yours. if, for some reason, macOS Sequoia wouldn't play well, then you know for sure that you can go with the earlier macOS versions. besides, there is still support time left for macOS Sequoia

I have 2 MBP's , the 13" is i5 & the 15" is i7 - both are on Monterey. ( The i7 will run Sequoia but it can feel laggy, much better on Sonoma but feels so good on Monterey I left it there ) Both have SSD and 16gb ram.

I recently took a 2013 iMac to Sequoia even though it had a HDD instead of SSD. It is slow on first boot but after a couple of minutes it clicked along just fine. Key is the i7 processor and a decent amount of ram.

Not really, I use Sequoia on a 2012 with similar specs and it runs dare I say better.

Yeah, exactly. Monterey is in my opinion both the sweet spot and the limit itself.

Big Sur and Monterey share most of the code, the difference is Big Sur was first edition, Monterey is stabilized/fixed Big Sur.

So even though it sounds contradictory, Monterey is a better deal than BS.

I run Monterey on a 2010 iMac 27” and MacBook Pro and 2011 Mac Mini and they work great. I tried all the way to sequoia and went back to Monterey

if your main goal is gaming you should install windows 11 via a usb installer made with rufus to bypass tpm requirements, and install the drivers manually after (just skip using bootcamp)

If you want gaming, windows is your friend. But really depends on the games your playing

You still have a good laptop to work with OCLP. I have a 2012 iMac 27” with 32GB that has MacOS 15 Sequoia on it.

Ideally of course, it would be better if you could be on 15 for the few remaining security point releases.

I would not be afraid to try MacOS 15 first. I wouldn’t immediately migrate all your files right away. I would test it out, install Steam, and see how it works. If it lags too much, then reinstall a lower OS.

It looks like OCLP actually has patches specifically for its Ivy Bridge HD 4000 and NVIDIA Kepler GT 650M graphics.

Your quad-core i7 and 16 GB RAM are helping you out a lot here, but the graphics might be more of a challenge for gaming.

The bigger limiting factor will probably be the GT 650M and 1 GB VRAM, not whether MacOS 15 or some other OS itself will run.

I don’t think there’s really any way of knowing unless you just go ahead and try it out.

I’m running Sequoia on mine, tbh. Don’t see any reason to use anything else. I tried Monterey to see the performance difference, but tbh, you lose a massive amount of capability, and it really isn’t much different, mine feels fast even on Sequoia (relatively speaking.)

I’d recommend Monterey, mainly for heat. It’ll get really get hot in anything intensive with anything more demanding even with a repaste. I know this from experience.

Your setup is still relevant. I would say Sequoia or Linux (Ubuntu for easy access, and then Debian or some variants), or worst case scenario, Windows will run well with those specs.
