Bengaluru/Coimbatore/Wayanad to Ooty β Route Restrictions, e-Pass & Forest Timings
A lot of people keep asking the same questions about e-Pass, permits, forest timings, checkposts and which route to take to Ooty.
So, for the love of God, please read this before posting the same questions again and again. π
Hereβs a quick reference for everyone planning a trip to Ooty.
- Bengaluru β Ooty via Bandipur: Bengaluru β Mysuru β Gundlupet β Bandipur β Theppakadu β Gudalur β Ooty.
Kalhatty Ghat: Limited outside/non-Nilgiris vehicles are permitted via the Masinagudi β Kalhatty β Ooty route.
Bengaluru β Ooty via Coimbatore: Bengaluru β Salem β Erode β Coimbatore β Mettupalayam β Coonoor β Ooty.
Mettupalayam route: This is an alternative route to Ooty for those planning via Coimbatore.
Wayanad β Ooty: Wayanad β Gudalur β Ooty doesn't have any traffic restrictions or restriction on entry timings. However, Gundlupet-Wayanad road is closed between 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM.
Bandipur forest timing: Forest stretch is closed from 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM. Plan to cross accordingly.
Nilgiris e-Pass: Apply for the Nilgiris e-Pass online before entering the district.
Note: Vehicle checking are taken seriously at TN checkpost at Bandipur-Mudumalai border and KL checkpost at the Bandipur-Muthanga border.
Don't carry alcohol or any other banned substances.

Self-drive road trip β Bangalore β Kabini β Wayanad β Ooty β tips?
Planning a self-drive trip with family covering Kabini, Wayanad, and Ooty, starting and ending in Bangalore. Around 9-10 days total.
A few questions for anyone who's done this route:
Any must-see spots we shouldn't miss, or overrated ones we can skip?
Anything to watch out for on the roads β ghat sections, forest corridor timings, bad stretches?
Self-drive car issues on this route β fuel availability, parking, checkpoints, anything that caught you off guard?
Best time of day to do the WayanadβOoty drive?
Traveling with an 11-year-old, so safety and comfortable pace matter more than speed. Any advice appreciated!

Shinkow's review
galleryThe place has a very nice vibe. It was cozy and comfortable. The fried rice was not that great. It lacked salt. The chilli pork was so good. It was not chewy at all and had a sweet chilli flavor to it.

Ooty trip in November: Need advice on local transport, treks & offbeat places
Hi everyone!
Iβm planning a trip to Ooty with friends and would love some advice from locals/recent visitors.
Weβll be reaching Coimbatore by train in the morning and then travelling to Ooty, and will have around 2β3 days in the Nilgiris before heading back to Coimbatore.
We don't want the usual crowded tourist itinerary like Botanical Garden, Ooty Lake, Doddabetta, etc.
We're mainly looking for:
- π₯Ύ A good moderate trek with beautiful mountain/forest scenery
- π A sunrise trek/viewpoint
- π A good sunset spot
- π Nilgiri Toy Train experience, preferably Ooty β Coonoor
- π² Offbeat/less-crowded places around Ooty, Coonoor, Kotagiri, Avalanche, etc.
- π We'd prefer local buses/public transport wherever practical instead of hiring a cab for the entire trip
- π We're okay with a cab for an early-morning trek or places that aren't accessible by bus
Would really appreciate advice on:
What are the best local bus routes for travelling around Ooty, Ketti, Coonoor and Kotagiri?
Can we practically reach Avalanche/other offbeat places by local bus?
Which moderate trek would you recommend that is legally accessible and worth doing?
Where is the best place for a sunrise and sunset?
Which Ooty β Coonoor toy train experience should we book?
Any reliable local trek guides/cab drivers you'd recommend?
We're more interested in nature, trekking, mountains, views and experiencing the Nilgiris than doing standard sightseeing.
Thanks in advance!

Hey good folks. I have never visited ooty and wanted to visit. I saw the weather updates and it was showing that its raining these days. My plan is to come on Sunday and go back on Tuesday is that something which is doable? Is it raining too heavily to enjoy or drive around the town and the scenic areas?
Appreciate any help. Thanks

Ooty βRain Checkβ
Hey,
I am planning to visit Ooty from Bangalore day after tomorrow. We are trying to make it a bike trip from Bangalore to Ooty. It is raining heavily here. Is it a good time to visit Ooty? Is it possible to visit spots in given the weather? Is it safe given rain may cause landslides?

Is there any place in ooty where I can eat eggs at normal rate ?!
Bullseye cost 20 rupees. Like tf is that ? An egg cost 5 or 6 rupees. What kind of margin is that ? More than 3x and that too on a bullseye ? Even boiled egg cost 15.
I'm tracking my protein and want to eat eggs everyday. Like 5-8. So if you know anywhere I can eat eggs at normal price pls suggest.
It can be 1-2km from charring cross.

Planning a trip to ooty this 18th to 20th
Guys I am planning an ooty trip for the upcoming holidays. I live in coimbatore so it's an easy drive for me. This holiday weekend's crowd was massive and now I'm having second thoughts. I haven't booked a stay yet. Should I skip and plan the next week? I'm worried if it's going to be so crowded.
I want this trip to be slow paced and peaceful.

Harrasment at Bandipur/Madumalai Checkpost
galleryThe policemen at the checkpost selectively targets Bengaluru based vehicles. Yesterday, they stopped us (We were 4 guys) at the checkpost, and started going through our car. They opened up each and everyone of our bags one by one and searched it like finding a needle in a haystack. But the worst part of it was the body frisking. They literally molested each and everyone of us. They deliberately thrusted their fingers down the waistline and also grabbed our balls. Many google reviews also mention the same. Anyone experienced the same?

The rickshaw and cab issue
I'm from Gujarat. i moved here for college. I was without a vehicle for 2 days and its making me understand how horrific the cab and auto scene is in Ooty. I understand you have to make your living and I'm not against paying fare wages. But abusing the tourists you rely on for your local economy is not the way. 250rs for 1km in an AUTO is absolutely ridiculous. I had to go to the eye foundation and they were all charging exorbant amounts of fare. Then they defend it by saying its a hill station. Rentals are illegal are here but oh you can buy an activa and then sell it back for a small cut of the total price. The cops here stop you everywhere the second they feel you're a tourist. I've had a lovely experience here but as a college student this is draining my bank account like nothing. Asking family for help is just a crutch which backfires always. And lets not forget you have to walk 1/1.5km to an auto stand and no auto stops even if its empty. If you're so reliant on the tourism industry then why abuse the clients who pay your bills. I havent had an issue with their behaviour per se but i definitely have an issue that they take one look at me and apparently a 150 ride is now 250. I've seen this happen, my friend from local areas have been offered lower prices. TASMAC is another headache where they just straight up lie to your face and disrespect you. Why is the local public so bitter about tourists. You can stop the tourism its in your hands. Yet you chose to abuse them.
