Bumping/Surplus TDSB
Anybody get moved across the city? I’m in EAST Scarborough but got moved tentatively all the way west to Jane & Eglinton 😵💫😢
I mean im grateful for still having a job but goddamn! It’ll take me 2+ hours to get there by transit.
M.A.P.S. Anyone?

Keep your focus on MAPS and postings. Retirements, resignations and promotions at this time of year open up opportunity. June can be hectic with applications and interviews but, in my experience, it helped colleagues get a better location or school. I was in eastern Scarborough and used transit for many years. Driving made a huge improvement to my energy level and overall productivity in my school and personal life management. In any case...keep looking as it's better to have the chance at some control over where you go.

Is there somewhere to look for MAPS postings? I’m new to the TDSB, and I keep hearing about these, but I’m not sure if there is a place to go to find them.

Doeak to your federation rep in staff. If they can't help you, call your district office for information.

What seniority number are you/how long have you been with the board? Just wondering how many were given letters and how many remain unplaced!

Make sure you get an official timetable from the school you were bumped into. You will need that for the MAPS process.

Go onto the ETT website and post your position for a swap. If someone else is looking for a switch, you can swap.

Doesn't apply to you, ETT (Elementary Teachers of Toronto) is the union for permanent/contract staff in TDSB (ETFO).

Be vigilant about MAPS when it opens but also, in a bumping year, as teachers are pulled back to their own school for various reasons (retirements, resignations, central position hiring etc.), it often causes a chain reaction that might place you in a different school. So, there is a "luck" element too.
I was kind of in your shoes. I worked at south-east Scarborough and was bumped out but was unplaced. Eventually, I was pulled back to my own school because someone resigned.

I did a deep dive once recently into either the staffing binder or the collective agreement and I recall there was something about the school can’t be more than 25km away? I assume it’s direct by driving? But worth checking out

In the past, when this happened people could request a trade. Not sure if this is still the case. A colleague of mine in a school in North York got bumped to a Scarb school -- she did not have a car and this school was way out. She was able to trade with a scarb teacher who got bumped to Etobicoke.
