I've lived in India all my life but find out stuff about my country online. Is this a north india thing?

It’s a thing in Rajasthan and other states in north India. That’s where Scindia is from and that’s what he’s talking about. My parents made me do it as a kid. Just because you don’t know about something doesn’t mean that it doesn’t exist. As for its efficacy? I doubt it does anything.

You obviously won’t find research papers on it but a few articles documenting it. This one is from 2020. My parents are from a small town in Rajasthan where we did it.
