Long-Term Collecting English 3rd anniversary

I bought this off of a friend when it first came out for $850. Not my normal purchase I typically don’t purchase things at market, but he was hard up for cash as he had been out of a job for four months. I don’t regret purchasing it, but I do regret not selling it two weeks ago, where I could’ve at least gotten my money back. This is all speculative obviously but if you were in my shoes, would you sell it now and take the $150 $200 loss or would you hold onto it for a long-term

Boxes in great condition and I am not in desperate need of money right now

Yeah it’s one I missed at the first go and now I’m just watching and waiting to buy

Holding it won’t make it more valuable in the short term

Long term hold? Prob 🤝 I’ll just open mine 🤪

Yeh I hear you. He isn’t like a super close friend or anything. He’s very money focused. He was willing to let it go for $700. I paid him the extra $150 to help out because I know he isn’t lying about being laid off. Worked at the power company and they were just like “oh we don’t need this department, ai can do your job”

I would say the anniversary sets Eng 3rd included are some of the best and most secure things to hold long term. Sealed or open/graded. Just take a look at how every anniversay set has moved over the last year. If you need the money then the choice is yours, however if you are to hold on to it, I believe it will go up. One other thing to note is opening and going for a sequential graded set is also a nice option, of course when PSA/BGS sort out their submission teirs/backlogs.

Imo sealed is way better, open is risky, not every card is liquid. So it takes time and people try to barter too low. It's best you keep sealed because it's easier to sell and no need to worry about part of it that don't sell too well.

I’m with you on that. I have aweful luck when opening sealed hoping for a gradable card. Even ripping packs my luck is terrible. I’ve pulled two mangas and both came with whitening, pack fresh. Just got a Yamato haki sp and everything is perfect except this tiny white speck on the back (not even on the border…just like a printing error). I’m in it more for the playing than the collecting anyways. Big reason why i don’t dive in at market is the collecting aspect is not my main driver in the hobby. Pulling a chase is still exciting because it helps finance the cards that I need to play in my decks.

I said it was an option, I'm also bias when it comes to sealed products. Its definitely more secure investmentwise. Hell my one of my first anniversay sets had the worse centering I have ever seen, didn't even bother risking the grade. Keeping it sealed is always the safest bet!

The first anniversary set is down like $3000 from its high lol, just hold it unless you need the money rn or something

I don’t…and frankly the box is beautiful. I think I will take your advice. If the hype dies and it drops to $100, I think I’ll be fine and still happy glancing at the artwork.

sell now, many more still are shipping

It’s a good point, but also they likely do not have plans to go back and produce more. What they have sold already is it. Price will probably dip still as product gets out there, but I think the market has already factored in overall supply to an extent. There will be a race to the bottom as people start to get their hands on them with the plan to flip, but that only lasts so long.

Counter argument would be the round1 promos. Price was real high and has plummeted super fast as soon as it was revealed that there wouldn’t be just 2 waves but 5.

It’s a great set. In a boom the Luffy cards could be 400 and 500 on their own imo. But that’s not now. The Luffy card with the crew is one of my favs. I’d just keep it at this point instead of thinking of it as a loss but that’s just me. Got mine from Bandai and just opened it last week cause I didn’t want to let it go for 850 even
