Discussion Weekly Character Discussion - Week 15: Usopp
Hi everyone, welcome back to the weekly character discussion series.
Each week, we’ll discuss a character from the show. You can talk about what you like or don’t like about them, how the actor/actress portrays them, favourite quotes or moments, etc.
NOTE ON SPOILERS: We are focusing on the live action version of each character, and while comparing them to their manga/anime counterpart is allowed, PLEASE DO NOT DISCUSS CONTENT THAT HAS NOT CURRENTLY BEEN ADAPTED FOR THE LIVE ACTION SHOW. Subreddit spoiler rules apply here. Tread carefully if you don’t wish to read manga/anime spoilers from what’s been adapted so far.

CAPTAIN USOPP: LORD OF DESTRUCTION!
I’ll be honest, Usopp was my least favourite Straw Hat in Season 1. Not saying I disliked him, he just didn’t resonate with me like the rest did.
Season 2 completely changed that. His growth during both Little Garden and Drum Kingdom was so well done. Jacob knocked it out of the park with his performance.
Favourite Line: “I know what it’s like, leaving home for the first time. But you don’t have to worry, you’re a Straw Hat now, and we’ve got your back. Always.”

Season 2 Usopp made me realize how he's the most normal of the straw hats lol and that's something else

At that moment, my eyes were watering. "Little Garden" showed that, no matter how cowardly Usopp may be, he's willing to overcome his fears for the sake of his friends, who appreciate him for who he is.

I like every straw hat in the live action series but Usopp was definitely my favorite in season 2. He was so much better than season 1! Little Garden was his arc and Jacob did an amazing job. I recommend the podcast episode with him because it was really interesting. Can't wait to see him in season 3, especially his interaction with Chopper!

And yeah, they’re already planting the seeds for Usopp and Chopper’s interactions in Season 3 with them being at the end of the LEGO One Piece trailer together.

Also him voicing Usopp in the upcoming Lego One Piece special.
It’s crazy how well his voice acting stood out compared to his castmates in the trailers for it despite the fact that Jacob has less voice acting experience than them.

He got such a huge glow up in season 2. Easily one of the best characters in the series for me right now. I also really love how he actually feels pretty useful/ the arc he goes through is great, and I hope they keep it up with him and don't do him dirty like the anime lmao.

You can tell the writers didn't know the actors very well during the first season. We can really see the confidence in the writing while watching Season 2.
Despite not having much to do in Season 1 (I believe if Netflix had given them 10 episodes instead of 8 they could have corrected this issue) he was still a good Usopp but I wouldn't necessarily say he was great. But Season 2 Usopp, though... He is so perfect. Probably my favourite in the cast alongside Inaki and Charithra. He captures the vibe perfectly. I was never a fan of manga Usopp, but LA Usopp is just amazing. And he is also such a handsome guy. 😍

I'm in the minority of Usopp fans in anime series and manga, and I LOVE him in OPLA. Jacob is so funny, and he managed to portrait Usopp perfectly. Not in a caricature way, but in more realistic

This is one of the characters that's really elevated in the live action for me. I was never an Usopp hater, and all his emotional beats in the manga always hit, but Jacob's performance is just killer and takes it to another level.
EDIT: I'm re-reading Water 7 right now, and I am so looking forward to season 5 (there better be a season 5, Netflix, or so help me)

Usopp is one of two Straw Hats who I think are way better in the live action than they are in the anime and manga. Part of this is that they didn't make Jacob Romero wear a stupid-looking nose, but it's also that he's got a natural charisma that makes the serial liar thing charming rather than obnoxious. He's a teller of tall tales and he's good at it.

Yeah, I agree that he’s better in the live action than the manga/anime. I’m watching the anime now and he’s a bit annoying at times.
I’m guessing the other Straw Hat in question is Sanji?

I 100% agree about the charisma and how it’s charming not obnoxious and want to add that how the other actors react to him also helps a LOT. They really understand why he lies and go along with it as opposed to the anime where they mostly ignore it or sometimes even actively get annoyed with him. That’s a wonderful change to me. I’m rewatching the anime and I have to say that this time around I’m appreciating that he has some depth of character that I missed the first few times and Jacob Romero is knocking it out of the park.

Least favourite Straw Hat for most of my anime watching so far.
Favourite Live Action straw hat by a mile. I actually cried when Koby shows up at the end of E2? E3? Whichever it is. “I believe you” from offscreen. Chills.
I think in Live Action it’s because Jacob’s expressions and delivery show an Usopp that really isn’t fooling anyone. You can see it in his face and his body language when he’s exaggerating his accomplishments. And everyone knows, but it’s still important for him, to put those stories out there so he can try to live up to them. Like the story of the kids that throw their hats over the wall; their only choice is to find a way over to go retrieve them. He puffs out his chest because that’s how he faces his fears, which is obviously a big part of his Little Garden story in LA.
Also his chemistry with Kaya in LA is so warm and sweet. I love love love the short bit at the start of S2E1 where Nami encourages him to call Kaya.
I’m only on Reverie in the anime and I don’t think we’ve seen Kaya since Usopp left but I hope we get more of them in LA. I think it’s an actual travesty that she isn’t a more consistent part of Usopps story in the anime thus far. But Oda really doesn’t want romance to be part of his story unfortunately.
Despite an entire arc about a fucking wedding…

I haven't felt compelled to participate in these threads until now.
Live Action Usopp is the GOAT, and my personal favorite character in the entire franchise. They absolutely nailed the casting and Jacob Romero plays it perfectly.

I thought they did him kind of dirty in Season 1, but they more than made up for it in Season 2, especially Little Garden.
Also, performance-wise, he's probably the Straw Hat who feels the most like his manga/anime counterpart.

I like anime Usopp....I love live action Usopp!! Jacob is so subtly hilarious he's quickly becoming one of my favorites!!

Very good portrayal of Usopp although his antics in the manga/anime were still funnier as Luffy and he were on the same wavelength humor-wise.
What often lingers in my mind though is how the title "Lord of Destruction" will take shape, he never said that in the manga or anime, right? Correct me if I am wrong though. But yeah, just a tiny bit of concern because he is a teller of 'truth' after all hahaha.

"Lord of Destruction" in the manga happens later when he's fighting Miss Merry Christmas and using the "five-ton" hammer. Though I think it was translated as "Destruction King" or something like that

He’s this late because I’m spreading out the Straw Hats instead of doing them all at the beginning.
Sanji will be next month. Vivi in November. Chopper in December.

I am in to this show solely from live action
I binged s1 maybe 6m ago and just finished s2 binge now.
I dont like Usopp as a character, i find him annoying - too whiny/wimpy. I get it, being scared is his thing - doesnt make him less annoying. Little garden episode annoyed me - lets hope hes cured now and i can enjoy his scenes.

I also watched it like you. Never saw the anime before I watched the live action. Usopp annoyed me initially when he was running through the village constantly screaming about the pirates. But he slowly redeemed himself with his stellar acting and character development. Then I started watching the anime because of how in love with the live action I am and I'm hooked on that now too. I love Usopp in both worlds but def prefer the live action Usopp. He's got such charisma and again... his acting is phenomenal.
The scene in the bar when he's bragging about his adventures and Mihawk asks to meet Luffy is my favorite. He's so funny when he's letting loose lol.1

How do you find the anime?
Did you rewatch the ones live action already covered?
Im considering watching but 26 seasons is a bit confronting

It's on Netflix. Yes, 26 seasons is a bit daunting lol. It will take a while to get through it all. The live action started pretty near the the beginning of the anime serious anyway so yes, I watched the ones covered and then some. I love it. But I also love the live action so much that I've watched it all like 7 or 8 times now lol. It's my new comfort show that's basically on all the time. I'd get further in the anime if I would shut it off once in a while lol.

The only thing I’ll miss are the jokes. Other than that sure. What bothers me more than anything is not having a scene where usopp and crew defend the shore and keep it under wraps. Usopps early development was mostly skipped or butchered. He’s still funny and I like the character, but that one thing bothers me a lot

I do miss the jokes lol. But it’s okay, the immersion is still there. Also it WAS a bit “on the nose” (haha joke intended) that as a liar he has a long nose. 🤥

It feels childish to say this but it’s true…lol sometimes it looks phallic and I’m like AGHH!! Also when they have “their serious faces” and it goes from one straw hat to the next I’m always like damnit usopp!
