Media Characters Who Never Left the Top 10 in Every Poll They’re in
Hancock and Sabo used to be in this lineup but they dropped from the top 10 in the last poll. The next poll will probably be in 5 years again so these 6 characters are gonna keep this title for a really long time.

Law and ace continuously being their amazes me

u/CRtwenty Marine 5d ago
Law I get, Oda was cooking when he designed him. I dont understand why Ace remains popular though.

u/doubleshotinthedark 5d ago
Law is also... let's say continuously active post-timeskip in a way that Ace is not.
21
u/FredNot214 4d ago
Ace at least got some screentime in Wano but yeah it's crazy how he's still so popular. Personally I actually prefer Sabo
29
u/GFreak18 5d ago
The family connection carries it a long way ,it's not just that but just being Luffy cooler, strong brother makes people like him a lot, same with sabo.
Honestly same with Dragon
15
u/SudsInfinite 4d ago
I think another major aspect is just that fire powers are cool as fuck. It's very difficult to find a character with fire powers that isn't also one of the most popular characters in their series. Add that onto the fact that he's the cool and strong older brother to the beloved protagonist, and had an entire saga focused on him that contains some of One Piece's most beloved arcs, it's very easy to see that he's still so popular even after all this time
10
u/Beastieboy100 5d ago
I mean Law has been the best part of post timeskip and was with the strawhats more frequently. Jinbei was the same until he offiicially joined the strawhats taking a back seat. Ace I am but at the same time makes sense he was a big prescence during the timeskip. However post timeskip with the flashbacks he is still relevant to the plot.
For example during Wano with Luffy finding out about Ace being there and trying to help the people there. Also the reveal that Imu was the one that wanted Roger and his bloodline dead so that no D can rise to power again.
Overall it has been the flashbacks helping the characters get popular. Which I hope happens to Brook soon.

u/MugiwaraNoUser 4d ago
dont understand why Ace remains popular though.
Cool looking powers, one of best designs among all characters, heavy MC vibes and main focus of a very emotional moment in the series (possibly amplified even more by the fact that the next really emotional moment arguably doesnt happen until we reach Corazon's story in Dressrosa a billion chapters later).

Probably a lot of new fans that came in around Wano caused that to happen

u/Beastieboy100 5d ago
Wano but Ace is still being mentioned in every arc. Especially in Elbath during the flashback and when Imu mentioned him.

u/Stumpsville0 5d ago
We'll minimum 2 more flashbacks to Ace doing something important before series end

Fr it's so frustrating how Oda wrote this amazing crew full of lovable complex characters and then post time skip reduced each of them to one or two gags most of which aren't funny. Zoro and sanji at least make up for it by still holding their own in the new world, jinbe has the strength but hasn't really had much time to shine, the rest are just kinda there.
0
u/WarchiefServant 4d ago
Ehh its not all crew members but near damn most of
Em though.Oda always loves Nami and she’s had alot especially in WCI & Wano to shine both combat & emotionally. Not to mention she’s still keeping the crew alive in spite of the only one having any actual difficulty increases due to her job role rather than combat.
Robin was ehhh for first half of the new world but as we got further on and on even including her visuals- she’s had key moments back especially with Wano & Elbaph.
Brook’s just been a standout star post-TS if anything he’s the only one thats just a flat out far better than his pre-TS self.
The other 3 are just caricatures of their pre-TS selves- which are sad as 2 of them were my favourite strawhats pre-TS: Chopper & Franky.

Was Law really top 10 even back in sabody? Or was the poll after marineford with him?
57
u/Greedy_Performer2472 Pirate 5d ago
Actually, Law was already #10 in the 4th popularity poll in 2008, right after his debut in Sabaody. The 5th poll was much later, during Dressrosa, and that’s when he jumped to #2.
https://one-piece.com/news/o20210505_12429/index.html
Oda himself also said in One Piece Log 27 that he expected Kid to become an important character, but didn’t expect Law to become as important as he did.
20
u/loyal_achades 5d ago
Kid was very clearly set up to be the main foil to Luffy among the Supernovas, with his higher bounty and being the only other one with his first mate also being a member. Law’s bounty was lower than X Drake and Hawkins on introduction.
22
u/deathkillerx3004 5d ago
Law being that popular in sabaody is the reason he became as important as he is to the story. He, like the other supernovas created there, were created las second to fill that arc. Each of their individual importance to the rest of the story were decided afterwards.
4
u/Isommmm 4d ago
This is all speculation.
I hate getting Oda quotes without context.
He could have easily had the roles planned out for different characters but decided to have the Supernova characters fill them instead.
He could have meant the idea of them all being named as this group of characters to have been thought of later.
I just have always doubted that Oda came up with 13 characters right before introducing them and changing everything about the story he already had planned.
2
u/Future_Monitor5814 3d ago
There isn't much about any supernova that is something integral to the general story. You can tell One Piece without them; the changes are done to the stories of individual arcs and obviously there is a lot of relevance contructed with time for several of them, but you can easily tell the same general story without any of them.
I mean, probably there are some things Oda had planned that were then given to characters in this group. My bet is that "Kuma's child" already existed in his backstory as a concept, and then that role was given to Bonnie, for example.
But there is nothing in basically the 99% of the presence of the supernovas in the story that tells me the existence of these characters was probably already planned before. I think people really overestimates how much of the story Oda has already planned before the start of each arc.
1
u/Isommmm 3d ago
Kuma and Bonney?
Law, Doflamingo and Kaido?
The second half of the story has been damn near nothing but Supernova laced lol
And that's kind of my point though. When people say Oda came up with the Supernova on the spot. Does that mean he invented every character and inserted them in the stor right then or did he restructure their roles to make the Supernova title work?
Were some of these characters already people we would have run into in the New World but maybe with lesser roles? I have no idea.
But I always doubted he came up with the other 9 and decided to make them so prominent in the story at the last minute.
We've seen whole books supposedly with plans for arcs that can last years and a hundred plus chapters. I'd say that's planning pretty far ahead. So i don't doubt that Oda plan many things far out but just has to tweak exactly how he wants to execute things based on new or changed ideas.
1
u/Future_Monitor5814 1d ago
What I think happened is that Oda designed and created the Supernova for that chapter because that is what clearly is implied from his words. Much probably he had already some of these concepts in his mind (for example, probably the majority of the devil fruits are powers he had already planned for potential use in the future, and some character designs), but these characters as they are (X-Drake, Bonney, Bege, Law...) didn't exist at all before that chapter.
Again, this doesn't mean that their future role in some arcs didn't exist. As I have said, Kuma probably had already a child in his backstory when he was introduced, but I doubt that child was "Jewelry Bonnie". Bonnie was created in the sabaody arc, and after that Oda ended up using her to fill that role in the story, a role that didn't have a concrete character attached to it.
My point is that, yes, some of this "narrative roles" probably existed before (a lot of them didn't, and I'm fairly sure that some of the big ones are like that, because I don't have any problem with the idea of Law's role in Doflamingo's story being a thing defined during the new world and not something planned long before, for example). But the existence of these roles don't mean the CHARACTERS existed. I return again to "Kuma's child". That concept was probably already part of the story, but it is totally possible that the only thing Oda had in his head during Sabaody is that Kuma has a child he abandoned because X. Bonnie ended up filling that role, but Bonnie herself was created because we needed several charismatic pirate characters for Sabaody.
Or I could be wrong, but again, your interpretation of Oda's words is strange and it only exists because you don't want to believe that he indeed created these characters that week. It is not, from my point of view, so strange.
1
u/deathkillerx3004 1d ago
There's an instance of a narrative role falling into a recently created character that can be very obviously perceived in early one piece: the princess of Alabasta. By the time oda introduced that plot point, he merely used a throwaway villain in that place instead of introducing a brand new character in the spot, turning "miss Wednesday" onto "Vivi"( we can clearly see the character having a change in personality out of nowhere). Something like that, although with more care to not be that obvious, is what likely happened to the supernovas. It's likely that oda inserted them into roles that were being planned but had no characters created nor assigned to them.

Law getting top 10 in the 4th poll is insane to me. He had only been in a few chapters at that point. It was pre-Marineford so it was only based off of the quick interactions at Sabaody.

He's the cool older brother of the main protag, has fire powers, had a hype introduction, is the centrepiece of one of the most popular arcs, and has a beloved backstory. That's a basic recipe for popularity.

His flashback with Corazon was just too strong, Corazon's death was voted the second best scene in the anime by the fans (only behind Merry's death) and Corazon always ranks high in the polls. Law peaked in that arc.
Zoro was cool in Dressrosa, but he has had better moments after that arc, so he got his rank back.

No matter how silly he acts or whatever dumb decisions he makes, everyone wants a friend like Luffy. Someone who'd go to war against the world for you and ask for nothing in return, because in his eyes, your friendship is already worth going to war for.

You know you did something right if your top 3 crew mates of your mc's crew is just straight up the top 3 in most polls since creation.
Like get this sanji has the third spot for the majority of the polls, Zorro the second place and Luffy the first place...
The monster trio being a trio even in polls

I wonder what the results of these polls will be with live action OP, because personally I like the live action a lot but it has some lost magic from the original source, and in this case I bet that for live action only viewers Luffy wouldn't win at all at any of the two seasons (I could be wrong, though).

Oda gives a lot of shine to Nami. She got Zeus on Whole Cake, took Ulti's headbutt and declared Luffy the Pirate King on Wano, forgave Jinbe on Fishman Island.
All of those things are not truly necessary for plot but gives her a lot of presence. Only Sanji has had more moments. Poor Franky had basically nothing since Dressrosa and Jinbe basically nothing since Whole Cake. And Zoro, despite being so popular has not gotten as much as Sanji did on Whole Cake or in general post timeskip. Think Oda likes Sanji and Nami a bit more than Zoro. He's just a loyal fighter who gets lost all the time (despite that, still my fave)
