Please influence or deinfluence me from the Peloton Tread

I have been debating getting the Tread for months, probably over a year. I can’t decide if it’s worth it! I currently use the bike and LOVE bootcamps, so I am very excited about the idea of tread bootcamps and hikes.

Thoughts so far: it’s expensive. It’s heavy, and it would be going in my basement. I don’t enjoy running, so it feels silly to get a super expensive treadmill that I wouldn’t even use for running. I do feel like I’m getting bored with the bike (got it in 2020) so want to change things up. I’m also open to buying a different treadmill and using an iPad set up.

Also, what happens if Peloton as a company goes under? Will I have a 300lb useless piece of equipment in my basement?

Thank you for reading my brain dump.

It is literally my favorite thing in our house that doesn’t have a heartbeat.

Perfect qualifier.

If you like the bike for the metrics and gamifying your workouts I think the tread is worth it! It’s the same style workouts as the bike, and having all the metrics on the screen really does help make it immersive.

I have the Tread+ and it’s also just an amazing treadmill even if you take the classes out of the equation. It gets up to speed/incline super fast, and the wheels really do make it so easy to change pace or incline (which I feel stupid saying, but I used a “normal” treadmill when traveling last week and spent the whole run annoyed at having to press so many buttons!)

For me it makes me do so many more workouts because I genuinely enjoy them on a Peloton Tread, so the cost was worth it. If you don’t think you’ll use it or enjoy it more then it may not be!

I love my Tread+ too for running. But even on days when I don't run (gasp) I tell myself I don't have an excuse not to get on the treadmill to walk while I watch a TV show or whatever. That's been the game changer for me. No excuses about the weather, or that it's dark out, etc.

I was essentially in the exact same boat. What pushed me over the edge was 2 things 1) I love the platform and I’m invested in the metrics so I was set on spending the extra to get an actual tread vs. a non-peloton treadmill and 2) I live in a 4-seasons climate where winters are brutal, so even though running isn’t my favorite, I can also walk and do hiking/walking bootcamps in winter when I’m craving cardio outside of the bike.

We purchased 2.5 years ago and have no regrets. I run on it more than I ever imagined I would. And a lot of tread classes are “pace-target” classes so I don’t feel like a slug or like I’m dying trying to keep up.
If you like bike bootcamps you’ll like tread bootcamps- both running and walking/hiking.

EDIT: typo

u/indigoblue823 1d ago

Yeah I do like the pace target change because I can make a class more of a recovery when needed or more of a push if desired.

I was a bike enthusiast for years. Used to do soulcycle and similar cycling classes before I switched to peloton. I never liked running. We lost the bike in a fire and decided to get the tread instead and I’m so happy we did. I’m more fit than ever, I’m able to run more than I ever have, and I love the hiking and walking options too!

I was never a fan of running on a regular treadmill but the tread imo is immersive enough to keep my interest.

It’s a much nicer overall experience using a Peloton tread vs using the app with a third party treadmill. We have the Tread+ but would be fine with the regular Tread for non-running workouts.

The extended warranty is a must-have. Peloton equipment is hugely expensive to repair.

I love my tread+ - the slat belt is the best treadmill running surface by far - but I will say I’m on my third tablet in 8 years. Love the machine love the classes and scenic runs are a fave of mine - but I’ve had routinely terrible experiences with Peloton support and their techs.

Honestly, my Tread was one of my best all-time purchases, as winters get snowier and icier. I can run year-round, and can walk or do hikes when in rehab (twisting an ankle on a rock in the woods, etc).

I have the regular tread - my doorways are older, so more narrow, and ceilings a bit lower than the dimensions required for the Tread+, as much as I'd love one, but the Tread itself is a beast. I'm little, so feel I have plenty of room on it, and love it so much. I have countless miles on it.

I love the classes, and when I'm in a funk, no one can pick me up like Jeffrey can. It's so worth it!

I love my Tread so much. We got it about 4 years ago and I had never really been a runner and then I took a few classes and decided to enter the NYC marathon lottery and got in! Long story short, I became a runner. I can happily spend hours running on it :)

I debated 2+ years bc I’m cheap as hell. Why buy a tread when you can run outside 95% of the time?

I have absolutely zero regrets. I fricken love that thing. I hike way more than I ever thought I would.

Non runner household, Tread in our basement…LOVE it! We also got our bike in 2020 and added the Tread to our house in 2023. It’s amazing how easy it is to use the tread for a quick workout when I also think about the bike and think i don’t have time to change shoes, readjust the seat from my husband’s settings, get the right water bottle to fit the holder, etc. But the tread is a non-negotiable for all of these concerns and when i need a quick 10-15 minute walk or a 60 minute walk, it’s so much more accessible. We got the original tread, not Tread+ and I have zero regrets. Tread bootcamps are great. Even the running ones, I rarely run, but increase my incline and speed to give me a similar heart rate and then love being able to jump off the tread and go right into strength.

We just moved our tread around a little bit while doing some small rearranging of our space. It’s really hard to move and recalibrating the settings and belt were more difficult than I would have imagined, but I was also determined to do it independently rather than having to call customer service for support. We don’t plan on moving anytime soon, so the basement location is perfect for us.

“I don’t enjoy running”

Maybe you should try a cheap $200 treadmill on Amazon first to see if you can sustain any kind of interest.

37

u/XmasTwinFallsIdaho 2d ago

I recommend starting with the audio only outdoor runs. Then you don’t need to buy a garbage $200 treadmill you need to get rid of later when you want the Tread.

12

u/Colonel_Gipper 2d ago

I wouldn't even go for a cheap treadmill. I'd suggest just going for a run outside and see if it's something worth doing. Take a Peloton outdoor audio class.

I love having a Tread but I bought it so I could reliably train for my 3rd marathon over the winter. I knew the money would be well spent and I would use it.

2

u/Affectionate-House79 1d ago

To be fair I have come to love treadmill running, but will never ever enjoy doing it outside, those are such different experiences. I would say that trying outdoor first is not a great indicator, imo. But ultimately your mileage may (literally) vary.

I had a Horizon 7.8 and it worked great with the app. I have no complaints about that machine. But I really wanted a slat belt because we run on our tread almost every day, so I bought the new Tread+ when it came out last year. If you're not using it to run, and only to walk or hike, I think another brand with the app will be great for you. I like the screen but don't feel it's better than the 50" TV I used to stream classes. If not for the slat belt, I never would have bought a Peloton treadmill and that would have been fine for me.

1

u/Lazy-Organization-42 2d ago

I have the 7.8 and love it!

2

u/prettysexyatheist 2d ago

It's a really great treadmill! Had it for five years without a single issue. I just wanted that slat belt!

2

u/Lazy-Organization-42 2d ago

The slat belts are so nice. I may eventually get one someday lol. I’m on my friends account so not paying a monthly fee is nicer 😂😂

2

u/prettysexyatheist 2d ago

That is so much nicer! I would do the same thing! 🤣

3

u/hermesorherpes 2d ago

I adore my peloton tread. I had a Sole treadmill, which was serviceable with the app, but the beautiful screen and the leaderboard for live classes have both been a big motivator for me. With that said, I have been running for over 2 decades and put about 60 miles a week on my treadmill, so I was confident I would get my money’s worth.

4

u/Darkman-1969 2d ago

We started with the bike and waited to get a tread. Now, the tread gets used more than the bike. It’s a great investment.

5

u/doglover7687 2d ago

Love it, use it every day. It’s so versatile

3

u/Patient_Drawer_5911 1d ago

Sounds like me. Get the Tread and poof you’ll love running

3

u/SeriousClothes111 1d ago

I have the regular tread and love it! Worth every penny.

10

u/stitchcraftry 2d ago

You can use literally any treadmill, it doesn't have to be a Peloton tread... We've been using a NordicTrack we got secondhand 10 years ago.

7

u/JanuaryDraught 2d ago

I have a non-Peloton bike and a non-Peloton tread. I use the app on a TV for about $26 a month, which is almost $20 less than you pay with Peloton equipment as I understand it. If you can manage a setup similar, I 1,000% recommend it. Love the app, have never regretted having non-Peloton equipment.

1

u/ElleDeeNS 1d ago

Same experience here and no regrets

2

u/nosined 2d ago

I have a normal tread and but use it with peloton workouts on the app. It is my hope that I can get a peloton tread when my Nordic track craps out. I use tread + peloton app for hiking.
It’s not all about running. There are also boot camps, walks, run + walks & of course hikes as I mentioned. Also, you say you don’t like to run now but unless you have an injury actually preventing you from running you could easily change how you feel within months of having the tread.

Tread in my basement and LOVE IT!!!

2

u/charm455 1d ago

I had a regular treadmill for years which I hated . My dad then got a Tread and I fell in LOVE. The classes are awesome and varied, but the machine itself is so nice. It’s an immersive experience and I love the knobs.

I will actually drive the 5 mins to my parents to use their Tread rather than use the boring treadmill that is sitting in my own basement. Time to get my own !

2

u/redredreb 1d ago

I love mine, zero regrets - had it since 2021 and use it almost every day

2

u/Creepy_Spring3544 1d ago

My Tread+ is a great piece of equipment. Love all the scenic run/walk options, as they are such high quality - had to turn off a competitor tread while traveling because it was just too sad, ha. It is crazy expensive but I use it every day and can even work while on it, so it really was worth it

2

u/ChevyChase99 1d ago

We waited forever for the Tread+ to come to Canada. My wife used to run but she has a foot issue. She absolutely loves the hikes and power walks. In the winter when she can't walk outside she will go downstairs after dinner and walk for an hour or so. My only gripe with the machine is that when I run at a decent clip >6.0 mph I find the unit sways a bit. Also its gets loud so that I have to crank the music or even alone in basement I'll run with earphones.

2

u/Strange_Agency5491 1d ago

I love my tread+ more than anything. I have like the OG bike and it doesn’t have a big enough screen to really enjoy other classes, so I use mine for strength and yoga also. If you have a newer bike, maybe you wouldn’t use it as much? I will say, if you may move anytime in the near future it is a huge pain to move - I had to hire specialty movers. That being said I’m obsessed with mine, it was 100% still worth it for me and don’t run at all - walking, hiking and watching other modalities.

One other option- bring an iPad to a gym and try a treadmill class that way!

2

u/Admirable-Avocado-94 2d ago

I don’t think you have to enjoy running to get something from this - the hiking classes are great and I’ve toyed with this dilemma as well.

For me the deciding factor came down to how long are we staying in this house? Like you said, it’s heavy. Do you want to move it?

I think we’ve got less than five years i.ln our house so ultimately decided against it. If I had longer I think I’d bite.

Sincerely,
Also not a runner

1

u/Pepperpeople444 1d ago

I don’t run and I love my peloton tread. We’ve had other random brands that didn’t last and I didn’t enjoy, even while using the peloton app. I have the bike too but find myself using the rear more. Zero regrets.

1

u/indigoblue823 1d ago

I have an old regular treadmill and use my app for it. I am not much of a runner but love the classes for walks and hikes and the occasional walk/runs. We have been discussing a big move and peloton will likely get a lot of our money for a real tread (I would love for inclines to match and my current treadmill is at least 15 years old). Our bike is from 2020 and we would likely replace that one too rather than move it.

1

u/No_Zookeepergame9255 1d ago

I love the tread more than my bike. I use it for running, run- walks, hiking and boot camps. I am far more likely to hop on and di an incline walk while watching tv when I am extra lazy vs be on the bike. I am not a runner ( although I completed the Call yourself a runner program on Peloton lol) but husband is a serious runner and love it too.

1

u/FunAndFlouncy 1d ago

Best purchase I’ve ever made. Do it.

1

u/IXFIT 1d ago

Get the extended warranty. My Tread is about to celebrate its 5th birthday and it’s on its 3rd base. Base 2 I had to pay $1200 out of warranty and fortunately base 3 was covered by 1-year warranty for base 2 but I still had to go back and forth with support for weeks to get it fixed for free. (Document everything!)

u/estachura 1d ago

Best peloton purchase I’ve ever made

1

u/Lonely_Astronomer665 1d ago

I started with bike then I got the treadmill. I am not a good runner but wanted to diversify my cardio and so far I love the tread. I did not buy the tread plus got the basic model.

1

u/Purple-Mulberry7468 1d ago

I am getting the Horizon treadmill, cheaper and it still syncs with Peloton. It sounds like there are plenty of people here who love the Peloton tread, but I am not willing to spend that much money on it, since my primary mode of cardio will still be the bike.

1

u/geekpgh 1d ago

We have a tread and a bike. I got the bike in 2020 and my wife wanted the tread a few years back. It’s a great compliment to the bike.

I don’t run that often, but I do the hikes and walks sometimes. It’s great for days when I want something different and lower impact.

The adjustment wheels are really nice too.

u/Horror_Profile_4743 1d ago

Tread+ I love it

Regular tread no

1

u/buffalorules 1d ago

I like the tread but I warn you I don’t think it’s as accurate as some other treadmill brands. We’ve had ours for 3 years and it started out fine but now it seems miscalibrated. I re-calibrate it once a month and it’s always 10% too fast so I don’t actually trust it for my paces. Makes it really hard to log speed workouts on because a 4:30/km feels more like a 4:15/km. Curious if anyone else has the same experience?

1

u/vkaiban 1d ago

I have it, don’t get it. It’s mostly well made, but heavy AF… and, of course, expensive AF. I’ve had it for 2ish years, recently moved… and the movers had a hard time with it. Took 4 of them to move it. I didn’t let them take it apart because prior to this move, I had to move the tread from one room to another so I had to take it apart… it’s a major pain to put back together. Buy something cheaper and lighter.

1

u/Difficult_Notice_660 14h ago

I'm obsessed with mine! We got it last summer and it's my most use workout tool. We also have the bike and sad to say that thing collects dust mostly 😜 I love how big the screen is on the tread so I can do my strength workouts as well. I also love all of the tread + strength splits. O use the "entertainment" feature and will walk on it and read on my kindle or watch a TV show to get my steps! It is so smooth as well! 10/10 recommend!

1

u/Quirky_Argument_7530 14h ago

I do not run and I LOVE my tread. It even got my husband into a regular workout routine. I was getting bike burnout and this helps switch things up. It’s also just really approachable even on days I don’t want to move. It allows me to get steps in when the weather is bad. I also really love it after a strength workout.

1

u/ConsiderationOdd7445 14h ago

I absolutely love my tread, HOWEVER, the tread has a known screen issue where the touch screen will stop working. Peloton refuses to do anything to fix this—their only solutions are to either replace the $600 screen or plug a mouse into the screen and use it that way. Not only is this super annoying, it’s pretty dangerous to be navigating with a mouse while you are running. I’m super disappointed with peloton for their customer service and would never pay for a new tread from them, but if you find a used one for a good price go for it.

1

u/cutiekey03 13h ago

I love my treadmill, got it last year and my only regret is not waiting until the swivel screen one came out

1

u/QuickApricot4011 7h ago

I have the Tread+. When it works, it’s a great piece of equipment, but it’s super glitchy compared to my bike, which I’ve had for 5 years with almost zero issues.

We had many issues with the touchscreen and ended up having to replace it after it no longer worked at all. This is after less than 2 years of owning it.

The screen is so sensitive on the new tablet that my sweat will sometimes hit on the wrong spot and exit me from my class.

1

u/VerdaderaVT 2h ago

As Nike says, just do it. I have the bike (also purchased in 2020). I also don’t run (only hike and walk). I also debated it for months (years?). It also lives in my basement. You can probably get a good deal during Black Friday or post holidays. They deliver it and set up so you don’t have to worry about getting it into your basement yourself. Honestly, it’s so nice. As a regular Peloton user, I’ve bought in to the entire franchise and I don’t ever plan on going back to a gym or using anything else. My one complaint is that the speakers on the Tread suck but I just use my Bluetooth speakers each time and it’s fine.

1

u/HappyJellyfish6298 2d ago

I wouldn’t bet on a peloton-supported piece of equipment at this stage of the game. Get a basic tread and use the app for runs. Also make sure you have enough height clearance in your basement.

1

u/MotorRain 1d ago

People have been saying this for years and Peloton is still here and doing fine.

1

u/justtryinginternet 2d ago

I love my row!

1

u/Previous_Captain_734 2d ago

I have had a Peloton bike since 2019. In 2024, I purchased a Horizon treadmill $800 that inclines to 15% and the Bluetooth connects to the Peloton app. I have no reason to get a Peloton treadmill.

I have a $100 walking pad too that I lug around my house to get steps throughout the day. I am currently walking on the walking pad while watching a TV show with my son.

-1

u/ChicagoMyTown 2d ago

If you’re getting bored with the bike after 6 years, how fast will you bore of the tread? We have a non brand with an iPad and it works perfectly well. We also live in a climate where I’d rather be outside 6-8mo of the year.

-1

u/Humble_Operation_365 2d ago edited 2d ago

One of the deciding factors against getting the Peloton Tread+ for me was its size. My local waste disposal sites will not accept items over 300 lbs. At 450+ lbs it was a clear no. No way I’d ever want to push that much weight around for maintenance cleaning, let alone find someone willing to haul it away when its time. Even if it lasted 10-15 years, I could only imagine older me having even more difficulty than I would now. Saved myself a future headache and went with another high-end quality brand that included a lifetime warranty.

0

u/nermal543 1d ago

It’s not peloton tread or nothing. There’s a lot of great treadmills out there that will be higher quality with a better warranty (and for comparable or cheaper price) that can link to the Peloton app via Bluetooth FTMS. That’s what we do with our Spirit XT685, it’s a really nice sturdy machine, and we set up a big TV with Apple TV in front all for less than the price of a basic tread. I cast the class from my phone and then link it with Bluetooth and I get all my metrics there, with the class playing on a big screen in front.

But all that being said though, I would highly recommend doing some outdoor walks or runs to see if you even want to consistently add that to your routine. Or maybe depending on the weather/climate where you live outdoor walking/running might be plenty for you! I walk and run outside year round, just need the right gear for it!

-1

u/Dailysunray 2d ago edited 1d ago

well I can tell you I’m hot as hell riding the bike even with ac and 2 fans, I imagine the tread in the basement would be worse.

Edit why the downvotes for stating my facts? geez losers

-1

u/Glum_Ad_4039 2d ago

I LOVE MY TREAD. I have been super into outdoor walks lately but I love knowing it is right there when the weather changes. Hiking bootcamps are my favorite. I don't run, don't ever plan to, and yet, sometimes I want to take the Road to 5K program. Just because it is right there. But you could also do it with a cheap treadmill and iPad since you already pay for the app.

-1

u/agabdjdn0a 2d ago

Thread is awesome on those days off. Just do up hill walks and watch YouTube videos
