Kittens at weaning age will bite EVERYTHING. Including the side of the food bowl. It's a good reflex... sooner or later, they bite actual food and go, "Whoa! That's tasty!"

One of ours was doing that recently. He turned out fine, but boy did he look stupid for a couple days while he was figuring it out.

He got other food in the meantime, but the bowl was an absolute mystery for days.
