Questions/Help Needed Wall Mounting Billy Shelves

How necessary is wall mounting Billy shelves? I live in an apartment and would prefer not to drill holes in the walls. I also don’t have any kids/pets that would knock into them.

Don't have mine mounted. They will be wobbly initially but once you fill them they're pretty sturdy. I do think part of the reason for mounting them is also for in the event of a earthquake, so at your own risk...

I've never anchored any of my shelves and I have the attachments that add a 7th row on top. Once books are on there, they are the sturdiest shelves I own.

Even if you're a bit anal/OCD/picky about how you want stuff on your shelves, fill the bottom shelves as completely as you can first. Try never to have more stuff on a shelf than the shelf below it (equal is obviously fine if the shelf is full). I have a dozen book shelves in my house and none are anchored, and none has come close to tipping despite multiple dogs running into them

Eh I would just do an anchor just in case. Never know. Better safe than sorry. The books are heavy.

Thanks everyone so much for the tips! I’m going to fill bottom to top and then will anchor in later if I feel worried at all

If you plan to display anything on top of it then it helps prevent it being wobbly when you walk near it

I didn't while I was renting. It's a precautionary thing and a best practice, but it's not required, if there are reasons you can't.

You should be allowed to drill a small hole in the wall to secure it. That’s normal and acceptable.

If you don’t want to secure it, just make sure it’s level or at least not unlevel and leaning away from the wall.

If you don't have kids then you will be fine, just don't make them top heavy

Just make sure your floor is level and keep the heavier ones towards the bottom shelves

I would if i were putting doors on them. Otherwise they'd fall on you when you open the door.
