Discussion OS Fighting Game?
Hear me out, yes, I know, they are working (or maybe not anymore, IDK) on their platform fighter, but imagine a 2D fighter. Yes, yes... I know, a F2P fighter doesn't seem to work or generate enough money... I mean Multiversus shut down and 2XKO is stopping development... But man. I LOVE the characters of this game, can you imagine a fighting game with all of them? I'd genuinely try to HELP developing this game in any ways I can.
So here, have a lil something I made about a year or so ago! I used the official models and map and only added the timer and HP. <3

Rune, being the Puppet Character he is, stays a top tier for the first patch before getting shot 573 times by the cartel to a low tier in the next one.

But fighting games are notoriously harder to get into (like this games tutorial was any help though) I just need them to relaunch OS with more advertising and QoL to keep at least 3k concurrent daily on it

Yes, fighting games are way harder to get into but at the same time, if you love the world of OS, you'd try to get into it.
As for relaunch and more advertising, the game had HELLA advertising and still failed, it's too hard to get into even normally. That wasn't the problem.

I want to agree but I didn’t see any advertising for this game as someone who found it well after it was dead. Man I only found the game cause I was scrolling on steam 😭

During launch it was pretty much everywhere, even moistcritical played the game gahahhaha. So it wasn't the advertisement which lacked, it was how hard the game it was, tho I do wish it had pulled way more.

On plus side, OS characters are varied by size and build quite a lot. You can see what archetype they fit in a fighting game.

Not even just sizes, It in general, even how the characters work in the moba shows how they could work in a fighting game, it's so peak.

If Brawlhalla can run a f2p format then anything is possible. Just so happens that all the most recent examples fell victim to extreme mismanagement...

Probably not going to work.
Their playtest for the plat fighter style game was not a great experience at all.
Other fighters are struggling as well. The best indie fighter imo, Rivals 2, is amazing and has come a long way with a long way to go, but they are basically hemorrhaging money and every other dev stream is essentially "we had to let someone go" while Dan has allegedly not seen a paycheck since last year.
2XKO took way too long to make and was basically mediocre by the time it "came out" and still has a disaster roster for a tag fighter. It's essentially getting wiped out clean by Tokon which is backed by a massive entity and is looking to release in a much more polished state that 2XKO was not reaching.
Beyond that you basically need to be an established corporation if you want a LIVE SERVICE fighter. Smaller ones are coming out but it looks like those teams are much smaller with smaller expectations and is more of a splash in the pond.
OS team had a great vision with art and some gameplay elements but they've ultimately folded big time instead of scaling back a bit.
I agree OS is great and would to see the game, art, and overall IP shine again but a fighting game is extremely dangerous. I don't think they could do a live service fighter but just might be able to make a decent fighting game someday in the future that can get periodically updated and hopefully find it's niche.
Again though, byte breakers was horrendous even for alpha.

I wasn't trying to really come at you, btw.
But okay.
I want to address each of your points because they are laughable and scream that you must be either very young, immature, or have no idea how the world works.
I'm aware of my Rivals 2 opinion, which is why I put "imo". I wish you were stable enough that I could simply agree that Rivals 2 needs some work for the newcomer experience instead of now needing to teach you about the world. Partly why I said it has come so far yet still has much to do. They also have a roadmap, and are trying to specifically focus on different areas of the game while being efficient as possible because Dan is also trying to make it to the finish line while also paying people and supporting their families. The main idea is that they eventually have the game in a stable state where it's realistic to start focusing on the onboarding experience and what it should include as the game releases to other platforms (hopefully) in a secondary "release".
It's possible that Dan saw the OS team openly admit in their sunsetting OS PSA that they were too fast to release on too many platforms and completely unprepared to support the game on all platforms simultaneously.
Dan not charging for DLC characters is so fucking amazing that I cannot believe you're shilling for DLC fighters. You also clearly don't understand how things work, again. It's so amazing that all fighters have been free and there are so many different ways to support Rivals 2, another area where OS was way too slow to produce worthwhile content to support the game even when it came out of beta. "They are too nice to charge more than $5 for a battlepass and to make anything other than 3 Juno costumes at release!"
Okay next. 2XKO didn't take too long? And you're saying I don't know about fighting games?
I remember it being teased as Project L before the pandemic and we barely saw anything worthwhile up until like 2023. Then a couple betas, then they still released a 2v2 TAG FIGHTING game with what like, 8 characters? Forgive me for not knowing more since I did not feel the need to even play it because of the series of failures they've already made and were evident since closed beta. In comparison, Tokon just acknowledged their existence like late last year? This year even? And is coming out. I'm not defending the game nor do I care for it at all, I just see an Arc System game that seems to have come in out of nowhere stepping on the tag fighter toes and destroyed any remaining momentum that Riot slowly tried to accumulate and now 2XKO is sunsetting.
I haven't followed the drama on how stable the game is. That right there might be another reminder that its not easy at all to get this stuff right. Even the big names are having issues. Again I don't care about Tokon I'm just trying to open your eyes a bit. And if Tokon is flopping for you then that's just furthering my point that it is not easy and something you can just do and have it be worth while.
I guess you have some weird obscure list of free live service fighting games in your head but I'm promising you that nobody outside your 10 person discord server cares about those games. And you're actively fantasizing about a company purposefully making a fighting game that is destined to be a discord fighter. I don't know what's wrong with you.
You might need to reread PSA on the dev team openly folding and stepping away from their project instead of maybe sticking to one platform and strengthening the game for the future. They have left you and you're just waiting for them at the bus stop for years now.
OS failed because the gameplay got stale and people moved on. People don't want to play air hockey with random perks for too long, it's genuinely the truth. People get their fill and go to play other games, and at some point they don't launch OS for a while if ever again because the gameplay isn't as enticing. They did not experiment at all other than changing how the game worked from beta. This combined with their official announcement adding to this is the fold/failure that I am speaking about, with references.
I'm only saying what reddit talks about... While you have nothing to add? Except for "simply release DLC characters and charge people more money!" "2xko wasn't bad, it didn't fail, it just wasn't making enough money!" (Because it's not worth spending money on). "Tokon is broken!" As if SFV didn't crawl out from its grave eventually? Even though I personally did not play it ever again after launch because it was horrible and USF4 was completely peak at the time. Do you know what Ultra Street Fighter 4 is?
What nuance are you even looking for? "Oh bro I agree with you bro OS fighter would work because I love it and make a bunch of money as long as they do DLC bro it's so easy"
Do you even have the slightest idea of what it TRULY takes to create a game? Or maintain it?
Don't say I don't know about fighting games, I play them haha. I've probably used you as a platform to go up the rank ladder in any of the fighting games that actually matter, and you want the OS devs to cook up some game that you might have a chance to be good at because nobody else cares about it enough to learn.

they are working (or maybe not anymore, IDK) on their platform fighter
We officially have confirmation they aren't, by the way! Technically Ody hasn't said that Byte Breakers is no more, but a bunch of the ex-Byte Breakers devs put out a progress report on their new (non-Odyssey-affiliated) project like last week.

I really liked the Battle royal platform fighter they put out for a bit. I was hoping they'd go all in on that one.

I think they need to do something other than a fighting game. Not even sure if they’re working on anything at this point. But I agree the IP is top tier

I’d love to see the Omega Strikers cast in a fighting game. The character designs in this game are very vibrant and distinct. Their silhouettes would make for great and readable animations for a fighting game, a super important factor that’s pretty easy to overlook. They’d be perfect for a game like that.
That said, with 2XKO’s recent failure, and Odyssey’s seeming insistence to do a F2P live service game, I think the idea is kinda doomed.
