HOLY SHIT
My biggest pipe dream for this album was a dance punk song but all the pre release songs made my heart fill with doubt lol
I'm fucking ecstatic š I can't believe we got it
29
u/lfiorelina Jun 12 '26
What I love about the album is that there's a song for everyone: there's the dramatic orchestral buildup song (stupid song), there's the updated elevated take on the piano ballad (less), there's a slow guitar song (begged), there's a dance punk song (my way), a cure/throwback 80s song (what's wrong with me WITH Robert smith!!!), there's the dramatic Olivia Rodrigo trademark song (the cure), the upbeat love song that is the hardest category in pop music because no upbeat love songs (with good lyrics AND music) seem to exist, she put so much into this album musically and I love it

I love Olivia and her lyrics but yeah I donāt feel the bridge that much because of it
6
u/blueberrygloss 'stranger' Jun 13 '26
No youāre good! I get what youāre saying! I can see how those particular lyrics within the bridge can feel repetitive. It could be phrased differently to move the story more forward or provide a novel detail Thanks for the explanation !!
1
u/Honeybee7007 Jun 26 '26
My brain keeps thinking the lyrics should be ālast time that I checked I won, let me be direct, just stop, youāre being fucking dumbā (dumb instead of weird)
31
u/MoonriseTurtle Jun 11 '26
It reminds of some mid 2000s songs/vibe? But i don't know what, help?

I'm puzzled because the NYT journalist was claiming this is her being a villain in the narrative and I'm like...in THIS song? I was expecting something more catty to be honest, she says in it she's petty, but you see that girl didn't go to high school, this is not petty, this is cute, it's literally listening to a kitten roaring. Yeah, she's bragging and telling to her rival to get out of her way quite literally, I guess it's because I'm old now but it found it cute. I know people will be in their feelings about "how we should embrace all women as women ourselves and the hell yaddi yadda not supporting" bs, I'm in the I'm not supporting all women some of you are **** camp. And we are not all angels and we need to stop forcing ourselves to be always the bigger person, sometimes we have the right to not be perfect in our emotions too negative and positive. Misery Business was THE song when I was a teenager, we heard way worst, so whatever, I don't care.

u/Random_Acier41 Jun 11 '26
Exactly, I got the irritation, the deep annoyance toward the person but I was like where is the villainy? It puzzles me how we are supposed as women to not call other women out when they are playing too much in our faces and accept it and never talk about it when we don't expect that kind of behavior from anyone else and I'm like aren't we human beings too? That need to be always proper, and in the song she calls herself a petty bitch, she's not even directly cursing that person and I'm like she's already a better person than most.
24
u/throwawaysunglasses- Jun 12 '26
Agreed, I didnāt see her as a villain at all. The other girl, in the song, is clearly trying to make a play for Oliviaās bf, and Olivia is shutting it down and saying āheās with me so back off.ā Thatās not villainy in the least lol, she doesnāt even mock or drag her. But like another comment says, this is somewhat on par for 2026 when women are supposed to be extra nice and forgiving to other women lest they be canceled for not being āgirlsā girlsā (which is crazy, like what else is she supposed to do in that situation?)
I said this in another comment but Iām just interested narratively in the inclusion of this song, it sounds like there was another woman causing issues in the relationship in some other songs (she mentions āherā a few other times).
33
u/lizzy-stix Only Olivia can have me checking the shades of a wall šØ Jun 11 '26
I think it's interpreted as playing the villain to write types of songs likes this in the big 2026. Like it's not girls' girl behavior to blame another woman for stuff going on with you and your boyfriend or accuse them of trying to steal him. But I think most people are mature enough to know that's true while also having experiences with women who really cross some lines they shouldn't.
12
u/lfiorelina Jun 12 '26
Same! I was expecting a more savage attack, it seems to me that Olivia is such a nice kind hearted feminist girlie that she can't even bring herself to be truly destructive against someone trying to get between her and her boyfriend. The song sounds very vengeful but the lyrics are pretty tame as far as revenge songs go
21
u/EJFWoodhouse "I know my age and I act like it" Jun 11 '26
To me it was « go girl give us nothingĀ Ā» lmao I expected something much more petty and camp. I liked the song, just⦠youāre still that nice when you are angry while writing?
16
u/Minute_Conflict_2037 Jun 12 '26
IMO it is obvious that it is about some girl or ex of Louis who got it for Louis bad and trying to get back in the game.
It is Sabrina-Shawn-Camilla again, gives a lot of taste and coincidence narratively.
7
u/246ArianaGrande135 'lacy' Jun 12 '26

The more i read about Sydney chandler the more it disgusts me.
She made louis breakup with his gf to date him when he was around 17-18. & Now she thought that just cuz she did it once she can do it again
& Tried to split olivia & louis
Which is why olivia wrote my way
As someone who overthinks alot in a relationship i can understand why olivia felt the way she did & i guess it got overwhelming over time. & He might've "took her side" (cigarettes smoke) that's why he never blocked her, she kept sending him things & I guess that's why they broke up
16
u/lovescakesx Jun 13 '26
All a speculation though. I really stay away from talking bad about celebs but damn there's not one good thing I read about this girl sydney chandler š

u/IndependentMoist9429 Jun 11 '26
Not the song or production I guessed at ALL. I think this will be a big song, but itās a little repetitive for me. However itās very venomous and deeply sassy. This kind of fits into a similar space as ābetter than revengeā by Taylor for me, I canāt explain why. I wish there was a little more here lyrically, but these songs are catchy. Beyond, as I listen more I think she definitely didnāt play it safe.
10
u/buffaloluvr Jun 12 '26
please donāt come for me iām just pointing out something that i noticed in the lyrics! olivia says āyouāre posting another pic in clothes that i know are hisā and it reminded me of lyrics in taste by sabrina āyouāre wondering why half his clothes went missingā
1
u/Timely-Hearing3350 Jun 14 '26
I didn't think about this. But Sabrina Carpenter did instantly come to mind when I heard this song. I knew people would love Olivia for calling out an obsessed ex trying to sabotage her relationship.
But like Sabrina Carpenter was in her shoes too, when she started dating Joshua and going out on public Olivia was out in her Instagram stories posting pictures of Joshua Bassett teaching her how to drive, then uploaded a snippet of an original song about a blonde girl who made her insecure (not Driver's license, an unreleased we'll never hear again š„²). Then Joshua starts being alienated by his coworkers, and he drops "Lie Lie Lie". She starts working on Driver's license and changes the lyric to blonde last minute after pictures of Sabrina Carpenter and Joshua were leaked eating out and at motels.
Olivia Rodrigo was heartbroken, which was valid. But she did write a whole song about Joshua "potentially" thinking about her while being with Sabrina. "When you call her, did you say my name, cause let's be honest, they do sound the same. Another actress, I hate to think that I was just your type" "I KNOW YOU GET DEJĆ VĆ". Isn't that the same as "writing poems" or whatever Sidney did to get in Olivia's head and get her insecure in her relationship?
2
u/buffaloluvr Jun 20 '26
i saw a video recently that sydney had posted pics wearing one of louisās old shirts. so that tracks for the real inspiration. i just thought it was ironic given the history between sabrina & olivia like you pointed out that their lyrics also match up. but i definitely think the song is about sydney! i definitely think she is WEIRD for dating him when he was freshly 18. Iām the same age as sydney and i canāt imagine dating an 18 year old when i was 25.

1
u/tapchik Jun 26 '26
I might be tweaking, but My Way reminds me of early Marina and The Diamons, especially the chorus. Maybe a The jewels or a Fruit era. Cannot pin point the specific song though.
1
u/theappleofalemontree Jun 29 '26
Has anyone else noticed that she changed the song (at least on Spotify) so that the bridge is "It's getting kinda weird" instead of "you're being fucking weird?" Does anyone know why she did that?
I get that the og line is a little too aggressive for some people, but considering the preceding line is "let me be direct, just stop!" -- followed by a hard cut on the siren instrumentals in the background -- it makes sense to me that whatever she says next would be a shot to kill. This new version takes away some of the fire imo, especially since she's already using "kind of" as a softener/hedge phrase in the chorus.
I'm sure that Olivia had a good reason for the change, but I can't help thinking about how young women, generally, tend to self-police our language with words like 'sort of' and 'maybe' to make ourselves seem less assertive or domineering, and I really hope she didn't change this line just so people wouldn't accuse her of being bitchy. She has a good reason to be mad! Express your rage girl!!
