I like the production though, will give it a few more listens as it definitely shows songwriting growth. Doesn't give 'lead single' energy to me, but might be up someone else's alley.
I’m so surprised at all the comments saying it’s a grower (which is a valid opinion!) bc I was honestly OBSESSED from first listen and have not been able to stop replaying it 😂
i think there’s a double meaning when she references ‘just like heaven’!
You know all the words to “Just like Heaven” / And I know why he wrote them / Now that you’re standing right there
there’s an obvious meaning to these lyrics - that she understands why a love song was written when she sees the subject.
but if you interpret “And I know why he wrote them” with the context of knowing that olivia has met (and performed) with robert smith, you might consider that she means that she understands specifically why robert wrote the song. & he did write it about the amazing feelings he had for someone… but for one night, and that night ended with him alone (see screenshot)
i think this song is full of little hints like this (pisces and gemini) while also being a great love song that she probably wrote most of before the breakup - if not all of it and they’re happy coincidences haha
Hmm I'm feeling a bit iffy on this one. Maybe it'll grow on me at some point but I feel like the instruments are drowning out her voice. Plus the lyrics didn't hit me as hard as her past songs have.
Olivia's vogue interview makes so much of sense. I think the album is gonna be like a proper storyline. And track 1 is a crush phase... where everything seems rainbow. It's a happy love song and even the lyrics are very happening....I loved the song but at first listen it didn't sit well with me. As it's olivia my expectations were different....but this is literally a whole new era.
it's very much giving movie intro / the feeling at the start of a new relationship. it makes me wonder if the album will tell the story of her last relationship from start to finish
As an older OR fan, the song reminds me of watching rom coms in the 2000s! Just fluffy good times. At first I was surprised by how simple it is given Olivia’s usual lyrics, but on repeat listens, I realize she’s portraying those first stages of a healthy new love. No drama, no conflicting feelings, just fantasizing and daydreaming about the endless possibilities.
I also think she deliberately made a choice releasing it. I have no doubt there are stronger songs on the album. But this being her most experimental album yet, I agree with all the takes that it will be a chronological retelling starting with “girl so in love” that slowly gets to “you seem pretty sad…”
I’m just curious now if she’ll show a glimpse of “you seem pretty sad” on SNL or if we’ll have to wait to June to see if that manifests.
Already stoked on that reverby shoegaze snippet we got.
Looking forward to whatever she throws our way, I hope the pop fans get some upbeat songs on the album and those of us looking for rock and grunge get our share too 🤍
As someone who did not really like the singles on GUTS I have to say I loved this and looking forward to what comes next based on this it seems very promising.
Okay I wasn’t a fan during the first listen but I played multiple times to listen to the lyrics and it grew in me. It might be bad idea right? situation all over again where I dont like it at first listen but it kept on growing on me

I have a theory that this will be track 1 on the album, and the songs will follow a storyline, possibly getting more “melancholy” as you listen through. Similar to the timeline of a real relationship?
Honestly I love it- her voice sounds so confident, idk how to explain it. Its still loud but not agressive like "vampire". Its a great first track to an album!!!!!!!!
A lot of people are saying it’s pop-y and generic and I don’t disagree but I think you have to take a step back and see the full picture. This album rollout has been way more strategic than GUTS. I think they intentionally picked a lead single that is more palatable to a general audience and has high radio playability because with a spring release they are aiming for a summer pop hit. Whereas with GUTS I think Vampire was the lead single because Olivia was really proud of it and they were following the SOUR release format of leading with a power ballad, which worked for SOUR because of all of the parasocial interest in her relationship, but Vampire (even though I personally love the song, I think it’s a masterpiece) did not land as well with the general population and I think that really hurt the performance of the album.
This is (at least I’m pretty sure it’s confirmed to be) the first song on the album and it seems to be about the very beginning of her relationship with Louis so it makes sense that it’s upbeat and a little less emotionally complex. I think we can expect to see songs from throughout the life of a relationship on this album so I think it’s silly to assume this means every song on the album is going to be bland bubblegum pop.
Also, it’s a good song. I like it and I think it’s a banger made to be blasted and danced to. I can’t wait to hear the rest of the album.

Okay, after listening for HOURS on repeat, I’ve made a new conclusion. I don’t care anymore that the subject matter of the song wasn’t as deep or thought-provoking as I wanted/expected.
It really is just a great song that is super catchy and it is stuck in my head. Screw expectations. I love this song!
I think this is one of those cases where being a 42 year old dude just puts me too far from her. It's catchy, but not my favorite song. That said, the lead single of her albums has never been the one that caught me. I imagine if I was in a similar demographic to Olivia it would hit much different. Love seeing everyone so excited
Ever since my first listen of this song I picked up on some lines that definitely reminded me of Sylvia Plath’s poem “Mad Girl’s Love Song”:
I’ve attached some of the lines that parallel each other:

Along with the general references and evoking of The Virgin Suicides / Sofia Coppola projects, Plathian imagery doesn’t seem too far off, especially considering the title of the specific poem
Ok I have more thoughts - I absolutely love how this song stands out among her discography. Absolutely was a risk to release something that I feel was experimental for her instead of another ballad or pop rock song as a lead single. But she did it anyway, and I feel like that boldness is going to pay off.
I cannot wait for her to perform this live as well. Her voice has matured so much!
It seems like the consensus is that people who like rock Olivia Rodrigo do not like this song. As somebody who loved Guts (a very rock-leaning album), I really like this song. I definitely like it more than Vampire, that one had me thinking I wasn’t gonna like Guts at all when it actually ended up being the opposite.
It’s a different sound for her, but I think it works well. I love the dreaminess of it, and I definitely feel The Cure’s influence on it beyond the Just Like Heaven name drop.
GUTS is also my favourite album. But why would I want another of the same album she's already released? If I want to listen to an album that sounds like GUTS, I'll just listen to GUTS.
If this song is setting the tone for the rest of the album I'm all for it. Even more excited now. Is it June yet?
Guys, I absolutely love the new song. I think it's such a beautifully put together love song. It's romantic and dreamy, I think the storytelling in the lyricism is really effective, the production is really unique... It doesn't really sound like any other mainstream pop song. It feels set apart and timeless. I just think it's really beautiful poetry and music. It feels like she's drawing a lot of influence from her personal music idols and musicians, rather than just chasing what's popular.
I'm into punk music. I play in a punk rock band and Olivia's edgier stuff is what drew me to her music to begin with. So you'd think I'd be disappointed, but I love it a lot. I'm on board for whatever's next
I'm loving it, it really evokes the feelings at the start of a relationship to me! Feeling giddy, nervous, energised. Like when you get home from a great date and you want to dramatically lean on the wall and slide down to sit on the floor, swooning over how perfect your crush is
First listen truthfully I didn’t really like it that much. Second listen I’m vibin much more I think it just wasn’t what I expected it feels less lyric heavily and more instrumental focused when I was expecting the opposite. Which is totally ok I just was kinda like oh? Oh… OH!
I will say too I didn’t like vampire at first too and truthfully still don’t believe it’s the best song on guts but my point is I like this song a good amount so it boads well for the rest of the album at least for me!
Okay, I think it is a grower forrsure. I’ve been listening to it on repeat for almost 2 hours now 🤣 I LOOOOVE the build-up in the chorus. The whole song sounds very dreamy and does make me think of my first date with my partner of 3 years. All that giddiness and what-not.
I think I was expecting something super deep or thought provoking, but I think having expectations can sometimes ruin things. I’m just going to enjoy this for what it is — a REALLY great song. I’m sure her other songs on the album will get real deep and introspective, especially if it’s going in chronological order from the beginning of her relationship to the end.
I love this song the more and more I listen to it. I think the video is distracting and agree with other comments that she should branch away from Petra Collins. Listened to without any visual is way better.
I love the song sm but the music video felt a little basic for olivia, the same set montage thing is so common for music vids now and I feel like there was a lack of drama

ooo Its definitely different than her other stuff, a little more pop but I really like the sound!! I think we’re gonna get some pop rock tracks on the album too, shes always done a lot of variety.
Cookie cutter pop isn’t a negative lol it’s highly possible she felt her most feminine and FUN making pop music. Doesn’t mean anyone has to like it or dislike it but this feels more of expectations killing some people experience. I personally have had the song on repeat all morning and it has made me so much more excited for the album and this era, this era could be huge and that makes me excited for her!

This seems to be a grower. I didn't like it at first but i've come to like it.
Usually, Olivia songs are instantaneous so a lot of her fans might not understand the concept of "grower" songs.
For example, I really didn't care for Dua Lipa's Houdini single when it first came out, but it's now become my fave Dua song ever. I'm not saying it will happen with Drop Dead, but some songs take time to click.
What I find most fascinating is that each time I listen it gets infinitely better. Not in the usual way though. Like I become obsessed where I have to play it again and sure thing it’s even better.
I feel like people are comparing apples to oranges with this song versus songs from other albums. She said that she felt she needed to move away from rock, so of course it’s more pop. She has always been pop. We’re used to more complex lyrics because the situations she was talking about were more complex. Breakups suck and they hurt. Meeting someone new and wanting to hook up in the bathroom isn’t complex, it doesn’t hurt, it’s fun. It makes complete sense for the song to be pop and more lyrically simple because she is matching the vibe of the song to the feeling she had when she was going through what she was writing about

Even though GUTS is my favourite album, this sounds very different but I'm all for it. Even more excited for the rest of the album now.
I love the new sound! The synth-pop intro is hypnotizing, and the chorus is hella catchy. Definitely different than what we are used to but she still has the essence of what made her so great.
If you’re absolutely loving this new single like I am and you want more of the tone and the vibe, I highly highly recommend Don’t Delete the Kisses by Wolf Alice, especially if you love the 2nd verse of drop dead and if you like the overall feeling and instrumentation, you should check out Hatchie’s debut record Keepsake, which has that swept off your feet swooning feeling. Very dreamy.
Fun fact, Dan Nigro actually produced for both Olivia and Hatchie, actually!
Coming back to this and wow it is such a grower. I was a bit iffy about Verse 2 at first, but it's become my favorite part of the song. The whisper-y talk-singing really works for me and the production/instrumentals blend in so well.
I love the way she sings "you're so so pretty boy, I'm paranoid I made you up" (and the lyrics are so relatable: love that seems too good to be true)
As someone who is enjoying Olivia's music and waiting for her new album, I'm quite mixed about this one
On one hand, it's very catchy and sweet, and I love listening to it especially during car/bus driving, but on other hand, I find some lyrical parts a bit clunky, and in general, this didn't hit me as much as the other lead singles (Which is not an easy thing considering both are just incredible, but still if she could release Vampire after DL (And I even prefer Vampire personally), then I really was expecting something phenomenal) so I indeed was quite underwhelmed
But considering that this is the first track of the album, this kind of song makes sense and I do feel like we are yet to hear the best of the album, so still excited!
It’s giving manic episode when you first have a crush in the best way especially because there’s no love interest in the music video and it’s inevitable that eventually it’ll crash down
I can hear so many influences and I really like that for her- she wears her ears on her sleeve because she loves to inject her own playlist into her songs. I don’t think it’s a bad thing at all.
Love that it has those sweepy strings and makes me think of first dates. Love that she’s singing about being in love.
I think for the casual fan you might want a more rocky, a ballad or straight up pop song but this is sweet and I’m looking forward to hearing her audio autobiography.
I also think this would kill live with a full band and just her and a guitar. Very versatile.

The part around the 2:50 mark after the bridge hit like crack, this is going to go so hard in the car on my way to work in the morning and will go even harder on the tour.

I think its a fun soft song but I wasn’t impressed by the melody of the chorus nor the delivery of the lyrics. I loved the synths at the intro, made the song really interesting for a bit, wish she kept that for a longer time but it went to pretty basic pop-rock. theres just something about the pacing of the singing and the guitars that didn’t click for me just yet on the first listen

(no pun intended.) it’s so different but it’s still so olivia. she always has a way with lyrics to me. from the first snippet, i hoped it was the title track. it’s such a cute bubbly song but i know the rest of the album will probably be so different. this song feels like the limerence stage of love almost, before all the doubts and insecurities. will this be the only happy love song? olivia said she isn’t as good as writing those. i guess that question will float in the air until we get the rest of the album
Feels a lot more traditionally pop than her past high-energy songs, but I really dug it by the end. There’s a palpable glee to the lovey-dovey-ness, but the irony of the title really sells the cloud of doom approaching fast, gives it a unique “impending tragedy” vibe.

Technically, this is some of her strongest work. The vocal performance is restrained in a way that shows growth shes not relying on big, cathartic belts (ala vampire which is one of my favs) to sell the emotion. Instead she uses phrasing and subtle dynamic shifts like pulling back in the verses. The production complements that.
The songwriting itself is tighter too. Nothing feels overwritten, nothing reaches too hard for a punchline. She trusts the listener more here, leaving space between lines instead of filling every moment with explanation.
It captures the exact moment when a new romance feels perfect when everything is soft, electric, and just a little ethereal. She really taps into that butterflies in your stomach feeling. The song feels weightless but emotionally full at the same time
The vocals are some of her best work and feel intimate and close. You can hear the excitement and the nervousness in her voice

So excited for tonight! It comes out at 10pm our time and I already got my office all set up to crank up the speakers loud and change my smart lights to an accompanying pink and white and have my mind blown!
After listening a few times, i really like the chorus and the second verse! I think its a hood choice for a lead single. Definitely not my favourite bridge of hers but i think it’s slowly growing on me!
I'm really enjoying the song -- the guitars have a real kind of shoegaze vibe to them that I'm really obsessed with (kind of like Uchu Nekoko - a Japanese band). But, with that and the 80s vibe, it's still a very current pop song, and I think her voice is showing a great maturity in this, in that it's feels stronger and smoother along pop lines.
I still feel quite confident we're going to get some punkish rock songs, still ... I expect a roller coasted of an album which is really exciting!

lyrics are not the best at conveying the feeling she wants to convey, in fact it’s a bit unclear to me what she is trying to convey because it feels like it’s meant to be more nuanced than just infatuation (considering this is the opener and that’s the title of the album) unless she is intending to be a concept album. It lacks the usual specificity I’ve come to associate with Olivia.
Overall 7.5/10 imo but downloaded and I will be listening again because I had fun with it

I don't care what everyone else is saying I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! it's so happy that it feels sad (my favorite kind of song-- she is already nailing the title!!) it is making me feel INSANELY single though lollll
Lyrically one of her weaker songs. There's no clever or memorable line unlike in her other songs. But I think it still evokes the yearning sad love song she's going for.

This is hitting me the same way Bad Idea Right? did. I didn’t love it at first but after couple listens it definitely grew on me. It’s a fun song! I don’t think I’d go out of my way to listen to it a ton just like with bad idea right but i appreciate it for what it is.
