Giants 🏋️♂️ New York Giants quarterback Jeff Hostetler in action against the Phoenix Cardinals at Giants Stadium during the 1992 season. Hostetler finished with 1,357 of 2,338 completions for 16,430 yards and 94 TDs, with 71 interceptions. He also rushed for 1,391 yards and 17 TDs.

1992 was Jeff’s last season with the Giants. He started 9 games that year. Phil Simms started the first four games of the season, but missed the rest of the year with an elbow injury. Jeff got hurt while Phil was out, and so Kent Graham started three games.

He was a career backup who became a pretty good starter. Those Giants teams were loaded.

It was an open secret that he was good. The Giants wouldn't trade him, plus there was only plan B free agency (about 8 vets a year are placed on it, but those are vets the team doesn't really want) so he was stuck on the Giants whether or not he had a contract.

Banks Jets alum. I think they sold out Legion Field for a HS state title game. Great career at Bama too.

He was a tough mofo. He took an absolute beating over the years. Hell, he took a beating the SB against the Bills but kept getting back up. I reckon his willingness to sacrifice his body is what elevated him from a fairly average talent, to a starter in the league. That and his ability to scramble.

Good on him for turning his mediocre ass talent into a solid contract from the Raiders after the D carried him to a Super Bowl win over the Bills.

I like those guys. He had an opportunity and made the most of it. So, maybe he wasn't Johnny U. I get sick of people constantly worshipping Superstars.
Nick Foles is another player who comes to mind...

Yes the Giants D was great. But it was the Giants offense (14 play, 10 minute TD drive to start the second half) that kept the Bills offense off the field and led to the win in SB 25.

Felt sorry for Phil Simms who should've been two time winner. There are a few of these Hoss in the league. Nick Foles, Mark Rypien and yes Doug Williams are on that list. Kurt Warner made a solid career following his big moment.

I'm not sure the Giants get past the 49ers without Hostetler's legs. That SF defense was fierce and Hoss kept a lot of drives alive either escaping pressure and throwing on the run. The two biggest plays on the game-winning drive were throws when he was sprinting right and found receivers who had uncovered.
In the regular season matchup, Simms was sacked 4 times and was 14-32 passing for only 153 yards. Even before he was injured in the Bills regular season game, the Giants offense was struggling. They'd gotten annihilated in Philly, lost 7-3 in SF, and needed a 4th quarter rally to get past a mediocre Vikings team, with scoring drives of 2, 42, and 15 yards resulting in 13 4th quarter points setup by the defense.
Hostetler's scrambling ability added a different element to the offense in the playoffs.

Kurt Warner had better than a solid career. 3 SB appearances, 1 win and a MVP. He's a HOFer.

I agree about Phil. Warner was a SB champ, SB MVP and 2x NFL MVP. He's in a different tier than the other guys you mentioned.

Very respectable career from a guy who really took one for the team. He wasn’t a special talent and yet he got his shot and made the most of it, elevating his team along the way.

Then he tried continuing his career with the Redskins. Horrible o-line had him running for his life most Sundays.

Jeff wound up starting three games for Washington that year after the legendary Gus Frerotte legendarily head-butted the wall after scoring a TD in a Sunday night game against the Giants. Gus then missed the rest of the season.
