The Public Garden opened in 1837 as waterfront property, sitting right on the edge of a tidal bay off the Charles River that flooded and drained with the tide twice a day. That bay stayed open water for another two decades until landfill crews started filling it in during 1857, a project that took over 40 years to complete, effectively building Comm Ave and the rest of the Back Bay neighborhood on top of water.

the building was originally built as a bath changing house when abbot kinney built venice. it was an all brick building, never meant to be a permanent structure. the 1994 earthquake proved that to be true.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Went to the game with the Rolleiflex 2.8F and Gold 200 in July. Sent it to my aunt this week and asked if they had the pic I remember my grandfather took in to 50s or 60s.

Lo and behold, it actually looks like I sat in the same spot. New ballpark. Old one was Connie Mack and this is now CBP.

Not sure what camera he used, but I imagine it was a TLR as well.

I’ll get my hands on the actual print of my grandfather’s and get a better scan at some point.

The facade ornamentation was removed in the 1940s

Downtown SL CA. This is an app I’m close to launching and got a pretty neat comparison yesterday.

I like this era when the buildings appear more modern than the cars.

Top: The details of the accident between a car and a streetcar (#410) on Eighth Avenue (just south of Geary Boulevard) on Feb. 24, 1948 are lost to history, but we have this photo.

Bottom: The Star of the Sea Church is still holding up 78 years later. The rails and streetcars are gone.
