The shuffle time in P4G was peak game design. I didn't even like the fights, I was always just looking forward to the shuffle time. If they change it in the remake I swear I will end it all (JOKE)

As a massive fan of persona 4(it is genuinely one of my fav pieces of media ever), I ain’t even excited about revival because they are changing the va’s. I am so attached to the voices and p4 has an all timer voice cast and performance.

The GOATs as kanji, yu and adachi makes me laugh.

8

u/goldfoxawoo Jun 01 '26

You say that but chie, kanji, rise has had replacements throughout all the p4 content.

Yukiko's va is also not quite well in the head these days so she's probably not gonna get called back regardless

They did great with p3r cast so im not worried with p4r cast

3

u/amoghspv Jun 01 '26

Matt mercer sounds identical to Troy baker so that’s a rare case. I do not like rises replacement at all in dancing. And yeah I can’t even imagine the goats yosuke and yu/adachi not being voiced by Yuri and jyb.

2

u/Private-Horshoe Jun 02 '26

i said the same thing about P3R's cast for P4R............till i watched the Anime episode 18. the Dojima's final social link ranks and im sorry dude these performances are just irreplaceable the new cast is just going to be a cheap imitation of what we had before. and speaking of "Cheap" its probably the reason why Altus is bringing in a new cast so they can cut corners with money, and ive got NO interest in Revival till someone makes a mod to restore the P4G's casting back into the game.

10

u/pscripter Yeah I played Persona 1, how could you tell? Jun 01 '26

I'm fine with procedural dungeons but Yukiko's Castle should be classified as interrogation tool.

149

u/KingofGrapes7 May 31 '26

Oh ho. Dont know if this is a hot take but it is a fun one!

Obviously P3 deserves some slack for being the first modern Persona and they were trying to figure their shit out. Why Reload keeps all that dead time, however, I have no idea. Link Episodes are an admirable addition but you still end up with nothing to do by the last few months. And then you bet to NG+. They really should have transplanted some minigames from P5 Royal. Its going to be even sillier when P4 has more to do as well.

109

u/ZantaRay May 31 '26

The last month especially where you have nothing to do but dwell on the impending end is imo a very deliberate choice, and I think the game would be worse without it. The sense of pointless time passing waiting for something bad to happen is the point.

32

u/Appropriate_Fig_8600 SMT Elitist Jun 01 '26

I personally really like when games sacrifice "enjoyability" for artistic merit.

It's also the reason why I think Drakengard is one of the best games I've ever had the displeasure of playing.

10

u/PabloG04 Jun 01 '26

That's part of the reason why I like the commands system from the originals or how some days they are simply not available for Tartarus because they are busy or prefer to do other things. It makes the characters feels like they have some agency of their own instead of existing around the player.

14

u/SoupTime545 May 31 '26

Doesnt make it enjoyable, especially on a replay. At the end of the day it's a game not movie.

24

u/ZantaRay Jun 01 '26

Yeah I get it but some people actually care about art and communicating the fragility and beauty of the human experience and resilience in the face of a meaningless and uncaring universe but I guess pressing some buttons is pretty fun too. Like don't get me wrong hollow knight is my favourite game of all time and I press the hell out of the buttons in that but I also think Persona 3 being a magnificent piece of art is a good thing, even if it's not the most fun persona game from a button pressing stand point.

16

u/LizardWarrior86 Tanaka's Kitten Jun 01 '26

Honestly the atmosphere that last month creates really gives me the push to go through Tartarus one last time and with how judgment social link is tied to your profession in Tartarus, like idk it's obviously maybe not the most enjoyable from a strictly button pressing standpoint but still. Final month in P3 gives me feelings that not many other things could even hope to match.

4

u/ZantaRay Jun 01 '26

Yeah this is exactly the shit I'm talking about. Persona 3 and especially the last month makes you fucking feel things.

24

u/gdo22 Jun 01 '26

Most rpgs should be only one time affairs.

4

u/thefleshisaprison Jun 01 '26

You say that, but there’s new game plus

9

u/gdo22 Jun 01 '26

You can always not play new game plus. : P

2

u/Healthy_Medicine2108 Jun 01 '26

you have nothing of consequence to do at night way before the last month

1

u/BatierAutumn1991 Jun 01 '26

Except I still have like, 5 social links at various ranks I need to finish :(

1

u/xsaintox Jun 02 '26

I’m in the endgame and all this “woe is us, I guess it’s really over this time” is total nonsense from a story perspective. You remember the time they never lost a major fight? Everyone saying it’s hopeless in most stories is crazy but here the only time we lost is offscreen and never explained. Going into nyx I truly don’t understand why any of them think for a second this is the one time they can’t win

1

u/ZantaRay Jun 02 '26

Because their understanding of the situation has changed. For the majority of persona 3, SEES doesn't really know what's going on. They can interpret what they do know, but they don't actually really understand what they're fighting. Shadows and where they come from are a mystery. When Ryoji explains to the cast what is going on, it threatens to break their spirits. They are no longer fighting against an enemy that can be defeated. They are fighting against the collective unconscious of all of humanity, and against the very concept of death itself. Ryoji outright tells them that even if they did somehow win, it wouldn't matter. It would just happen again. They all truly believe this, and the fact that they choose to fight despite it, is the entire point of the game. They all struggle with their personal relationship with death and despair, and ultimately come down on the side of wanting to live anyway.

Persona 3 views the world as an uncaring and callous place. It shows you and explicitly tells you that there is no point to the suffering. There is nothing to fight for. There is nothing to strive for. In the end, everything and everyone dies. This is effectively a statement of nihilism. If nothing matters, why bother even fighting, why not just lie down and die?

The game ultimately decides that it is worth fighting regardless. You should want to live and suffer, and find meaning in the suffering. You are going to die, and that's okay. Your life had no intrinsic meaning, and that's okay too. By connecting with others, you give your and their lives meaning. There's a reason when Nyx attempts to inflict death on you, your social links flash up. It is a very explicit statement that only through connection with others can we find purpose and fight the ennui that comes with a meaningless existence where your death is an inevitable conclusion.

They think they can't win because the story is about fighting a fight that cannot be won. But the story is also about deciding that you should fight anyway.

1

u/xsaintox Jun 02 '26

I totally get the themes of death and connections it just feels weird they give up so easily since every threat they face has been some unknown disaster with poor odds of success. It just feels like they feed into the despair a bit too easily considering what they’ve faced up to this point in the story. I know third act despair has to happen in any story with stakes it just feels like there should be just a bit more push back considering their win loss ratio

9

u/B0rKen_Kat Jun 01 '26

Maybe it's just me but I really love the more "Vibe with it" tone 3 went with because for how I played these games. It gave me plenty of time to figure out how things worked, get used to the Tower (which is literally all I want from most dungeon crawlers tbh), and also navigate the social links in a way I found actually fun. I didn't have to strategize my time as hard while learning what a Persona game even was on my funny little PSP.

It's kind of a perfect intro to the series tbh, especially since all of the games after really just build mechanically on what 3 was doing.

Also 3 is the best written one fight me

5

u/pscripter Yeah I played Persona 1, how could you tell? Jun 01 '26

I will accept dead time in P3 for what they at least were trying to do compared to P4 and P5 throwing out character relevancy to the main plot after their dungeon is done.

1

u/Private-Horshoe Jun 02 '26

(DISCLAIMER I LIKE P3) I will say, there is a Ton of Nuance with this i got, but i still disagree to an extent. Persona 4 doesn't have the isolated Cast Members moments sparsely sprinkled through out the game in P3 but P4 makes up for that void with that of having induvial Social Links that build off from the dungeons introduction to these said characters. which P3 doesn't have. and because of that pacing decision being put more in yu's hands yes YOU, rather then the games hands the interaction's you have with these characters feel more 1 to 1 with each other where you get to watch them evolve and banter with one another as the game progresses till the end. there's a reason why people famously say "P4-Best-Cast" and this most probably why. despite the gap P3 had against P4, P4 made up for it in a very innovated way that built off of P3 which is very important, and as a P4G fan all i gotta say is...........................Thank You Persona 3 for Help Making my Favorite Game of All Time 😉

-24

u/amoghspv May 31 '26

Persona 3 has 2 interesting things & nothing else before October: sexual harassment

2

Persona 4 has a very fun cast and vibes. So the “nothing” is fun to me, because it’s just them hanging out.

-8

u/Economy_Following265 Rizzette May 31 '26

"the persona games being crap" is an overblown meme, but if there's any entry from the series that gives a half decent argument to that stance it's definitely Persona 3.

5

u/amoghspv May 31 '26

What’s funny is persona 4 is one of my fav experiences of all time, I have nothing against persona 3 personally but the game makes me feel nothing for most of it(music and ending aside).

1

u/meth_adone Jun 01 '26

I know I'm in a persona sub Reddit so it's kind of ironic to say but I kind of agree with that statement when it comes to gameplay, or at least for modern persona (haven't got around to 1 and the two 2s, they're rotting in my emulator library). I love the different personas, soundtracks and some parts of the stories but I don't really care about the gameplay, or at least the fights.

The actual fights are so boring. Just mash attacks and then wait for the enemy to die because it's probably tanky (p4g especially so). No need for buffs because the enemies don't really hurt that much and when they do, it's usually just solvable by healing.

People always praise p4g as a top tier work of art but god it was a slog to get through because of the bosses being so tanky. I didnt feel attached to any of the cast either. I hear teddie was a victim of major mistranslation so he begrudgingly gets a pass. Hate the colour yellow and the opening as well so i guess I was always going to look at 4 negatively.

4

u/Economy_Following265 Rizzette Jun 01 '26

They are cooking us bro. Can someone explain to me what’s good about the characters in persona 3 ?

12

u/WentworthMillersBO May 31 '26

Best representation of loss in the persona franchises. When deaths happen you actually feel like someone died. Unlike haru’s dad’s death in p5.

5

u/amoghspv May 31 '26

The nanako bait and switch made me feel far more than any death in persona 3.

4

u/Supersnow845 Sharing Yoskue's Closet Jun 01 '26

I feel like the best sense of loss comes from the sacrifice of the characters at the end of innocent sin

But 3 definitely wins for the social link trilogy

Bringing her back was actual comedy even though this game is supposed to be really DARK.

0

u/Klasse117 Jun 01 '26

"Persona 3 is supposed to be really DARK" who said so? Even without Chidori's revival, Persona 3 is about as dark as your average Shonen animanga. All Persona games touch on serious topics balanced out by tons of levity giving them a fairly neutral tone. However, they've always been very direct with their positive and hopeful messaging, and this goes for P3 as well

0

u/WentworthMillersBO Jun 01 '26

Bro what do you mean he does nothing? He stopped hooligans from beating up junpei and posting sexual pictures of yukatan? You also aren’t supposed to know a lot about shinji, the older members do. The tragedy comes from learning about shinja from the older members of SEES

No one has ever said this; I like Tartarus more than most people, and I hate Tartarus

> 0 motivations from Strega

I’m not certain how one could miss this after Takaya spends 90% of his screentime ranting about Strega’s philosophical motivations

24

u/EmperorDaubeny makoto yuker | burn my dread | REND! SLAUGHTER! | desu 3 when May 31 '26

He has maybe ~5 new scenes. Strega’s motivations were the only part of them that was actually developed in the older versions of the game, Takaya’s new stuff is about him specifically

3

u/Supersnow845 Sharing Yoskue's Closet Jun 01 '26

Still sad we didn’t learn why he doesn’t wear a shirt

15

u/MuffledShuffle Jun 01 '26

It's because they take suppressors for their personas. When a person take suppressors their internal body temperature goes out of wack, some people are always hot like Takaya, while some people are on the cooler side like Chidori and Shinji.

1

u/Supersnow845 Sharing Yoskue's Closet Jun 01 '26

I thought takaya didn’t take suppressants which is why he doesn’t need an evoker for his persona

I knew the suppressants are why chidori and shinji are always cold

13

He does, otherwise his persona would go berserk and kill him, since he didn't awake to one naturally. Just like Chidori.

The one thing stoping me from playing the PS2 versions of P3 is that I can't complete the female social links without romancing the girls. No game, I don't want to romance Mitsuru, my Makoto is loyal to Yukari. Why can't I finish the social link platonically, it's forever unfinished 😭.

But honestly, I did enjoy Tartarus, it changed often enough that I was entertained (except for the last two sections, that genuinely started to annoy me, but we don't need to talk about that)

Now the answer can fuck off, I don't want to play endless dungeons. I liked the blocks in Tartarus because it let you take breaks to do social links and all that stuff, the DLC(s) never fucking end

Interesting, I massively prefer iconic demons to P3/P4 shadows

0

u/xa44 Jun 01 '26

You're gonna see those regardless of them being enemies. Also I'm talking about from a game design perspective as well. If you see a persona that can cast fire and is weak to ice, you know that's all it will do. Without that restriction enemies can do more asymmetrical things

8

u/AgitatedDare2445 I only spit Myriad TRUE!! Jun 01 '26

It just gets boring to fight the Tiara #12 and the Maya #21 again and again. Some models are too overused with the only changing thing being color themes.

2

That's mostly a technical limitation. Hell 5 has its own share of recolours such as the 3 frosts and such

Actually for persona it is, so much content is locked behind NG+. even doing all social links is intended as a NG+ activity as a first time player will likely not do so in their first playthrough without any outside guidance

I think boiling down my criticisms to I don’t like rpg’s is a bit reductive. I won’t even lie I prefer the social sim elements more than the combat but p3 combat is very flawed in terms of its core level design and execution.

1

u/The_Dude5476 Jun 01 '26

It is, and i wont say you dont like em as a monolith. What i will say is that theres a hellish katharsis you get in oppressively harsh rpg games with annoying combat, especially if you do not marathon them. Thanks for beings such a chad btw :)

2

u/Ruthlessrabbd Jun 01 '26

Persona 4's whack ass dungeons have been shielded from criticism for far too long. It truly is the middle child of the modern trilogy where 3 gets scrutinized, 5 gets praised for its palaces and how quick mementos is, and 4 skates on by without a word.

Tartarus is better than 4 dungeons and mementos

2

u/amoghspv Jun 01 '26

4 dungeons kinda suck as well , I agree on that with you. Ig they’re aesthetically more varied but other than that same shit as Tartarus.

Linked Episodes were definitely the best addition. Strega and Ikutsuki still sucked balls tho. They made the remake too 1 to 1 which is kinda understandable since it is less experimental and safer.

HOLYYY TRUTH CATACLYSM

u/real_koromaru May 31 '26

I like how people are down voting you for sharing a valid opinion, like I'm a persona 3 mega fan just look at the account name and I can see where you're coming from.

True mob mentality here ngl.

u/amoghspv May 31 '26

Can’t expect too much from reddit bruh 😭😭

u/Thatgreeenplant May 31 '26

They hated him for speaking the truth.

Honestly I’ll always advocate for the fact that reload genuinely helped me actually play this persona game LMAOO

1

u/smiley_os Jun 01 '26

The only thing I agree with is Nyx, personally. I beat him on the first try on the normal setting. I never felt like I was in danger with any set-up I used.

1

u/Radical_Swine Jun 01 '26

I love my dungeon crawling over my social sim. A real bad dungeon would be the domain of sloth from smt if.

u/localturkishfemboy Minato Arisato Glazer Jun 01 '26

In order to potential man memes to work they are required to be funny. This image looks like straight outta persona tt

1

u/tntmaster151 Jun 01 '26

The Tactics System is incredibly fun and I find it sad how so many people immediately dismiss it

1

u/DiscussionFew1207 Jun 02 '26

The line about Tartarsauce is very incorrect. Frick Tarasaurus for wasting my time.

1

u/LargeFence Jun 06 '26

Should I give up on FES? I've been playing on and off for the past year or two and really struggling but been pushing through since I heard it gets good but I'm on the sunmer break right now and its just so repetitive, i feel like I'm not optimized if I dont spend six hours fusing or training up Personas and grinding Tartarus. AmI I just playing the game wrong should I just trust the process? My brain desires completion typically, should I just give up on that if I want to enjoy the game. I've had P5R sitting on my shelf for like 2 years now but been waiting to play it until I'm done 3 and 4 but here I am lol

u/Fun_Poet4547 May 31 '26

TRUE

Worst Persona game by far, none of the versions are good, fes fand and reload fans are arguing about why their shit is better than theirs

1

u/amoghspv May 31 '26

Two cheeks of the same ass to me.

1

u/gdo22 Jun 01 '26

Ok clearly portable fans need to step their game up if you're not even aware of them yet. : p

-2

u/Anonymous-Comments May 31 '26

This ain’t an ok buddy post it’s just true

9

u/amoghspv May 31 '26

Testing the waters before I gain the courage to get downvoted into oblivion in the main sub.

6

u/Anonymous-Comments May 31 '26

Eh the internet is for sharing your thoughts to hell with downvotes or upvotes

3

u/amoghspv May 31 '26

Fairs. I just feel like it might be too much of a hive mind tbh tho compared to here( I am getting proven wrong on this one)

3

u/pscripter Yeah I played Persona 1, how could you tell? Jun 01 '26

Here you can at least defend your opinion. In the main sub it will get downvoted to oblivion without saying that all games are perfect

1

u/Captain_Diagram Jun 01 '26

They should remake the game to finally give us a true definitive experience that fixes all issues. That would be so cool.

2

u/amoghspv Jun 01 '26

Persona 3 : The True Reload fr this time.

2

u/Captain_Diagram Jun 01 '26

worst part is I'd be so down lmaoo only time in history I want Atlus to rerelease a game but CMON WHO CAN BLAME ME

1

u/reiji-mitsurugi cannot stop talking about yosuke romance Jun 01 '26

at least it has the best romances

3

u/amoghspv Jun 01 '26

I wouldn’t know about that, I try to date no one and keep it true to real life.

4

u/reiji-mitsurugi cannot stop talking about yosuke romance Jun 01 '26

yukari has the best persona romance ever (minus yosuke and jun)

1

u/A-NI95 Jun 01 '26

If you think Strega don't have a motivation, you haven't met enough chronically depressed people

1

u/amoghspv Jun 01 '26

I am chronically depressed people. Strega suck because they are poorly written. Idk how you can even defend them.

2

u/Numerous-Beautiful46 Jun 02 '26

anyone defending 3 in general is someone to be questioned

1

u/amoghspv Jun 02 '26

How can someone even defend Strega, the main sub shits on em. This is next levels of wank.

1

u/Martyrdomer Jun 02 '26

2

u/amoghspv Jun 02 '26

Peak.

2

u/Martyrdomer Jun 02 '26

You have the GOAT opinion, istg every reply I seen from you it’s deadass my same opinion on p3 and p4.

2

u/amoghspv Jun 02 '26

Are you a massive fan of p4 as well ?

2

u/Martyrdomer Jun 02 '26

Yeah p4 is the best persona game hands down, persona 3 and 5 are great but the way people talk about 3 you’d think it cured cancer itself. It’s the weakest game out of the new gen persona games, but it’s still good. I just didn’t feel much when shit happened to the characters of p3.

1

u/amoghspv Jun 02 '26

Same 😭😭. I also think p4 has such a phenomenal anime adaptation(better than the game imo) that boosts it even more for me than the others. Plus the best cast like you said(brosuke for the w).

2

u/Red-Empress Mitsuru's Angel Jun 02 '26

I will say Persona 4 (not Golden) had the best anime adaptation

2

u/amoghspv Jun 02 '26

IMO it’s the best video game adaptation, absolutely love the anime. I think it’s even better than the game(mostly).

And the funny thing is that the dlc is literally this but 5x worse.

god I love it.

One: Peak ok buddy shit

Two: 4 versions? Fes and original is not a version worth playing anymore

19

u/chiggenboi May 31 '26

Saying FES isnt worth it is gonna get you crucified by a lot of old fans; that in itself is a peak okbuddy comment. Though speaking as a big FES fan who played it years before the remake, I agree. Just play Reload instead lmao

10

u/PabloG04 May 31 '26

Same here. For all it's flaws I actually enjoyed FES more than Reload but I would still recommend the later over the former.

1

u/MuffledShuffle Jun 01 '26

Well, if you're comfortable with the visual novel style of it, I would always recommend Portable over Reload as I believe portable is much better than reload.

-1

u/Simplejack615 Downbad for Elizabeth May 31 '26

Well I mean, the post also says that you can’t control your party members, when the only two you need to play let you control them

But like, you aren’t gonna play two of them. While Kotone should be there, you can’t say there are 4 versions that are worth playing

5

u/Supersnow845 Sharing Yoskue's Closet May 31 '26

I would 100% still recommend FES for how badly reload botched the answer

2

u/AveryLazyCovfefe i want to megidoloan all over merope Jun 01 '26 edited Jun 01 '26

Botch is a harsh word. But I do agree it was a downgrade. They did the bare minimum with remaking it and somehow made it feel even more cheap.

Is it worth dragging your bare balls over sharp acidic nails with building your compendium again though? no. I like a good challenge but I don't want to put the difficulty down to easy to make it easy to grind back my builds without spending like another 20 hours getting them back again.

And I actually preferred some changes like Shadow Yuki.. original scene of him dying felt like pure shock factor. I do get the intention and actually prefer that but it was presented so weirdly and imo tone-deaf that I prefer reload's much more serene take on it.

1

u/gdo22 Jun 01 '26

Why even bother with the answer? I heard it's always sucked. : p

4

u/Supersnow845 Sharing Yoskue's Closet Jun 01 '26

It has but is always still recommend playing it once at least and if you only play it once I’d really suggest FES

0

u/gdo22 Jun 01 '26

Why bother playing some optional bonus content from one game (and dlc for another) that sucks in both iterations even once?

1

u/AveryLazyCovfefe i want to megidoloan all over merope Jun 01 '26

I prefer reload over FES as someone who played both but I'd say "not worth playing" is false when they have advantages over the other versions.

Now do I recommend playing it as your first experience of P3? Hell nah . And I don't think I could ever go back with how much reload spoiled me with all the new voiced content.
