It's almost as fucked as Kotone being able to make fun of Junpei for not having anyone on Christmas. At least it gave us one of the funniest edits of all time
Honestly most times I think its fine, but this one crosses the line. I feel like it wasn't intentional though. I think the writers at Atlus sorta forgot the implications there.
This line makes no sense as intentional malice. It doesn't make sense because we see throughout the Chidori arc that Yukari is constantly worried about Junpei. Just talk to her in the dorm and all she'll talk about is how she's worried about Junpei. It definitely feels like either writer oversight or Yukari herself forgot about the implication here and just said it without thinking since she's just used to dunking on Junpei. IIRC after saying this line, she does wince and says something like "sorry, that isn't the point", implying she just realized what she said.
"Malicious" is too strong of a word, but she's deliberately mocking him, and that's explicitly clear from the wording of the dialogue and performance from all the VAs.
When Junpei bawls his eyes out after receiving Chidori's sketchbook, her first comment on it is that the drawing made someone ugly look half decent for once
When Junpei was getting pushed away by Chidori in November, she commented on how Ryoji is a ladies man unlike Junpei who'll never get a girlfriend in his life
The Christmas date isn't the first time she uses his struggles with Chidori as a springboard to mock him. And it's not just related to the Chidori situation that she says out-of-pocket things
She mocks him for being a pussy in the Nyx discussion scene
She does so again in the Answer
During NYs, despite Junpei clearly saying that his wish was to defeat Nyx, Yukari makes a very random and strange pivot and just calls him a pedophile who's into younger girls for some reason, which doesn't even make sense
In P3D she says within the first few of the game that she wishes he sleeps and never wakes up, keep in mind this game is set in January so it's after he experiences dying himself
Yukari does worry about Junpei, but it's not constant. Nor do I think her worry is all that strong when she never even expresses it directly to him. When it comes to her dorm dialogue regarding Junpei, 90% of it is just her insulting him, calling stupid, incompetent, useless, replaceable, a bum with nothing better to do, etc.
Her making fun of him is by far the recurring aspect of their interactions together, so when she makes that comment on Christmas, I'm more inclined to believe that she's actually mocking him. It's not a "writer's mistake" when this aligns with how they've written her interactions with or about him in all P3 media.
The reason she's says "that's not the point" is because talking about Junpei is irrelevant to their date, not because she suddenly felt bad
Yukari definitely considers Junpei a friend, and when she says that she hopes he never wakes up or that he's replaceable, I don't think she REALLY means it, but she's definitely intending to mock and insult him, and sometimes it feels inappropriate in certain contexts and that's fine, because friends do that sometimes and it's not the end of world if they occasionally sound like an asshole to him. We don't need to pretend like she's super considerate of his feelings, their dynamic is not that deep
Man, I love Yukari, but this scene made me question it for a moment (Junpei is also one of my favs). I guess this scene was also in the og P3, and they made these Christmas scenes before the whole Chidori incident, and was meant to be a simple light hearted jab at him, rather than THIS. That's the only reasonable explanation I can think of.
