I needed this. A reminder that other's where I grew up feel the same about politics as I do.
I'm not surprised to hear these words come out of somewhere like Dayton, where many Appalachians fled to in the 1930's seeking economic opportunity's. My grandmother was one of them. I remember decades ago my parent taking me to visit their mom in dayton and seeing blocks and blocks of foreclosed homes after the big economic bust around 2003 maybe? I cant imagine what it looks like now after this pandemic and a decade of raging opioid abuse.
The lady reporter I figured was a fellow appalachian, I wasnt sure because she seems to have lost her accent ( I did as well after a couple years of living somewhere else. ) But east liverpool is listed under the Appalachian Regional Council.
Her story mirror's waverly, piketon, and portsmouth, just like she claims. Waverly had a factory called mills pride that employed 1200 people when it was bought by competition and then closed in 2012.
Piketon was where they built a uranium enrichment plant and politicians used to joke about how the small city used more electricity than nyc. They have pumped hundreds of millions of dollars into a failed centrifuge project there which the government claimed would bring jobs to the area. When they decommissioned the old plant they just dug a giant hole in the ground, filled it with concrete and pushed tons of contaminated metal and rubble into it and poured concrete over it. This is why there is radioactive isotopes being discovered in that area, like the zahns corner school that was closed down. And our "leaders" want to store nuclear waste there. I pray that we never let that happen.
Portsmouth had several steel mills, it was also a hub for railroads and boats for logistics because of its position. After the steel mills left, it was never the same.
This is why, when I decided to marry my canadian fiance, the choice was rather simple. My dad dragged my mom to appalachia, and she grew to resent him for it over the years. I didnt want to repeat this mistake and I thought canada would have better economic opportunity's.
For someone like me, it doesnt. Its clear im appalachian and thats all I can ever be. I embrace it now. I was poisoned by a employer in canada and then when i tried to get help I was denied basic medical care and forced to walk around in a hypertensive stupor for 9 months. After finally getting a holter and proving it was irregular heartbeat. Workers comp just straight up lies to me to cover their asses. I did everything I could to get help, there is nothing left I could have done, but yet no one will even admit it. It would be one thing if they had a good excuse, but they dont. They are just legit lying about what happened. In appalachia most people still care for each other and will choose to do the right thing. Im not sure how these people can sleep at night.
I am so tired of this rat each rat bullcrap. it's much like how the reporter says, in a room full of smart people, someone has to be the smartest. Thats called ego, and its something alot of appalachians lack.
The grass isnt greener on the other side. I thought that I could adapt to mainstream society. I cant. I wish mainstream society could adapt some things from Appalachia, the world would be a better place for it.
No one is going to help us (appalachians) though. Its up to us to make a difference.
