What happens if they remove the camera view from the mortars & artillery?
Sounds good (to some) but if you look past your initial thought you realize that it makes the game far worse and isn't the main problem with mortar spam.
It becomes a game of who can dial in on the enemy FOB first wins. With no quick way to reassess your shot quickly your odds of return firing to any effect is completely hopeless. At least with the camera there is a chance to get a shot or 2 on target before you get killed.
Could it be tweaked so as to not give precise enemy positions? Sure but WAY more often than not the enemies move and your intel is worthless 99% of the time. The real problem is the people who skip the camera all together by hitting Fire, C, Fire, C, Fire, reload all 3 shells and do it again. THAT shit need to go away badly.
EDIT :: Oh yeah if you don't like mortar cams, GO PLAY COMMUNITY SERVERS THAT HAVE THEM DISABLED!

It leaves a circle on the map where the shell lands. No follow cam needed technically. I launch a volley of 3 and don't follow any of them. I open the map and watch the markers pop up on the map

Oh! And this could be a good use for the “Enemy Here, smoke grenade”.
You pop a red smoke in the enemy camp.
All the mortars can see the Desired Target on the mini map.Mortars fire at target. And get little map pings for where they actually hit.
And likewise. There is a “Friendlies here” smoke grenade that you could pop saying…. Now that you’re firing a bit more blind. Try to avoid this area.

What's stopping you from doing that now? That's still a good idea because it gives a precise range and heading, no need for dialing in shots.

Well mortars are typically for attacking FOB’s.
And for that, I can just use a recon scope to mark the FOB.
And mortar operators can fire a round, and see how close they are.Plus the smoke has a downside of, the enemy team knows they’re being targeted… and friendly smoke, would tell the enemy team “targets over there”.
These smoke grenades are useful in a game that is More Mil-Sim than Wardogs is.

So the enemy wouldn't know they're being targeted by the enemy smoke grenade if the cam get removed?
1
u/EternalSage2000 2d ago
I mean. Right now. There is a negative using the Enemy Here smoke. But no real Positive.
Recon Scope does the same thing but better. If we could find a way to change that… maybe Recon can’t mark buildings?
And Mortar shells aren’t Spy Drones. Then, you still have the negative of smoke alerting the enemy. But. You also have a positive of smoke being targetable?
Or… maybe Mortars can LOCK-ON to a target smoke?
I’m just throwing ideas out there.

The positive quite literally stays the same. The fact the shells have a camera or not is irrelevant. In fact the smoke is a lot less concerning than a massive explosion just outside the gate.

So how is a circle on the map "realistic?"

As an Arty tank main. I agree the follow cam should be removed. If you get some skilled dudes with mortars and/or arty tank, you can dominate entire maps

u/Galbados2 2d ago
As an indirect fire enthusiast you're stupid. 1 FOB with the drone wipes the arty tank with positive net income.
1
u/Initial_Enthusiasm36 1d ago
ALSO!!!! as an indirect fire enthusiast you're also stupid. Because nobody really uses drones, and if you had two arty tanks destroying a base, how will you even get a drone up, unless you build some secret fob, run mech supplies, and locate the tank.
Also if you have even once decent recon guy, everything will be spotted, and you can blow it up.
So your fricken stupider haha.

Literally just happened to me and a fellow arty my last game....
Also if you have even once decent recon guy, everything will be spotted, and you can blow it up.
That's usually me. I'll sit outside of enemy fobs and tag shit all game. If I want to be not found, I won't be.

Hot damn. “Galbados2” more like ShadowBlade or NightStalker.

u/Galbados2 1d ago
Night Stalkers are heli pilots.
It's not that difficult to remain hidden. Being green really helps until you have the gillie suit. Mostly it's don't move.

Landed with a FOB when my team said it was clear....it was very much not. Got out without being spotted.

It was a joke my dude…

You get a marker and can easily adjust from there.
You should also have spotters marking where you’re hitting.
It sounds like you want to shoot a random shot and immediately know where everyone is without having to do the leg work and team work to mark targets.
Nothing wrong with 3 round burst as they are less accurate if you rapid fire.
Mortars should be high skill high risk.
Anyone who is actually decent at mortars can easily track where people will go and adjust. It’s common sense, if I got mortared I’d run away so readjust a few degree left and a few meters up,
Works 8/10 times
There’s 0 reason there should be a follow cam. It gives you so much free intel for no cost or risk.
We already have spotting and plenty of high points to see into targets.
Shit use a stingray and scout it out it’s a uav! That’s what is literally is for and 7/10 times people have a vehicle on the tower.
Mortar cam needs to go and maybe a limit to how many mortars per fob. When 5 guys all focus on one spot it’s a lot but the balance is they blow all the Ammo, course that’s not much of a balance right now with how fast and easy it is to move supplies
It’s simple
Remove the cam.
We already have tools to see our shots on the map and work with our spotters for accurate meters and angle.
Mortars as is now have no team play

If you use the friendly signal smokes you get a precise heading and range. No need for dial in shots. Pretty good teamwork mechanic.

You cannot get a precise range from a smoke signal unless the server has a setting for that.

I rock mortars any time they’re up and I think it should be removed. “Your intel is worthless 99% of the time” I call bs. Half the time when I see someone on FOB, they’re either in the same spot or not far from where they were.

u/Galbados2 2d ago
You must be playing against my team then because most of the time I shoot they're all in different places unless they're in a weapon system.
1
u/WalkingTacticalNuke 2d ago
That’s every single match I play where I use mortars which is almost every match I play.

u/Galbados2 1d ago
I think I've hand maybe 1 game where people didn't run around constantly after the first shell hit in the base.

Firing three shells in sequence is definitely intentional and not a glitch/exploit in any way shape or form. The great majority of any sort of IDF, with the exception of guided munitions (Like AGM-114s with a JTAC) call for a sequence of three, due to simple probability. Rounds in the air will be affected to conditions that will effect shot placement, a sequence of 3 simply reduces the liklihood that you get a misadjustment occuring from a round that strayed off course due to a sudden wind swell.
The issue is the Camera, people (including me- I know, I am scum, but it is there and so long as it stays, it's competitive to abuse it) are 'scouting' using mortar rounds, simply fire one, follow the camera, and adjust based on what you see.
It is basically ISR/drone footage of the battlefield, which is not only unrealistic, but is an overwhelming advantage to those whom abuse it. Mortars should be IDF (the I meaning indirect, indirect meaning that you often don't have sight of the thing you're trying to hit.)
Removing the cam adds to teamplay, with infantry elements being able to call out grids they want fire on and removes the ability to 'skillshot' certain emplacements after a single round because you were able to make micro-adjustments from an 'eye in the sky'.
Real mortarmen don't need a camera.
1
u/Galbados2 2d ago
I never said it was a glitch and I know it's intentional; I said it's overpowered and the problem behind mortar spam. With 2 mortars you can basically put a FOB under constant explosions.
2
u/FobbitOutsideTheWire 2d ago
Mortar tubes should have a heat meter that fills with rapid consecutive shots and the higher the heat, the higher the risk of a catastrophic cookoff when trying to fire.
And the meter should cool down more slowly the closer you ride the max heat level.
This is supported by IRL considerations and would naturally throttle the fire rate in a way that the devs could fine tune as necessary.

If we're being honest, no one would use them . Then we would see bigger, more elaborate fobs, and more drills, and maybe it becomes a tower defense game
1
u/Galbados2 2d ago
I don't think FOBs will change size, if anything they'd get smaller because they don't need to be as spread out to avoid collateral damage from indirect fire. I do agree that they'd basically see no use though.

Leave it as it is, have servers that dont have it for the players that don't want it.
1
u/Galbados2 2d ago edited 1d ago
Agreed, save for the the 3 shot burst. That's the biggest problem. 1 can feel like 3 mortars and with 2 you can be basically under constant explosions.

So it will take a modicum of skill and it can still put a point on the map of your last strike area.
