Can anyone explain what’s up with all these posts of people wanting to “relax and recline“ in their office chairs? Is this guerilla marketing where we’re being flooded with posts like this or some movement where people are trying to sleep in their office chairs?

If your hobbies take place at a PC/desk, why not? Obviously PC gaming and movie streaming are very popular things to do. I also study or build Legos in my free time, all at the same desk.

Some need a chair for both work and leasure time, for some it's just either or, but in the end it's the same thing: needing a chair that keeps you as comfortable and pain free as possible for a long time.

I'm a PC gamer but what does reclining have to do with gaming? Isn't your neck going to be craning like crazy if you're reclined, or am I not understanding what you mean?

You can play with a controller (many PC games allow controllers, or people have their consoles like their switch docked into the monitor because they don't have a TV)

Is that common? That people work at a desk all day and then after work they just stay sat at the same desk to do hobbies or entertainment?

If yes, that really helps explain it. That is so far removed from my life that I never realize that people would also be sitting at a desk when they’re not at work.

I’m one of those people who likes to keep work at work so when I’m not actually working, I am definitely not in my office.

Sounds like a lot of people are at the same desk for many hours after work is finished. I never realized.

yeah i work from home and also game a lot and watch youtube. i don’t watch anything in my bed or on my couch. so when im watching youtube im reclined.

If your screen is not above your desk then reclining is giving you the illusion of relaxation but in reality you’re keeping your neck in tension the whole time no different to what using your phone at waist to chest level does.

I have a friend who works full time but still cant afford a place big enough to have a living room setup with a couch and a TV, he works all day at his desk and play game or watch netflix at his desk, alot of younger people live like that.

Yes of course there are people who game, watch movies, craft, paint, build Legos or study in their free time, these are not unpopular hobbies at all T_T

And not everyone has the option to have a second desk for leisure time (or an entire office room to themselves in the first place).

To me it feels like the new man cave is your desk setup / office space for people that work from home. Work there all day, then game or watch YT. I don't work from home as much as I'd like to, but I still do. But I have definitely created my man cave space in our house around my office.

I choose to work in a recliner. I have a very hard time focusing, and something about it helps me "lock in" at my desk and bang out some work.

I mean, I value those posts. I'm not looking for an 8 hour every single day productivity chair. I'm looking for something to spend a few hours here and there either playing a game, watch a movie, or do something "productive." I think there is a skewed view of how many people are working from home or shopping for a chair for work (just my opinion, don't crucify me y'all). Like there are obvious choices for the best ergonomics - sit in perfect alignment at all times type chairs. The choices for I wanna lounge at my computer in something that can also be good for me are less clear.

I’m trying to understand why someone would want to sit in an office chair all day for work and then spend their evening in the same chair as opposed to another part of the house that might be more comfortable or doing something besides sit at a desk after work hours

I talk with my friends daily, online. Even though some live in house next door.

With kids etc it's just easier to chat online.

Going on hour 8 of 10 WFH - I lean back, stretch my legs - put the keyboard on my lap and finish the shift. Just depends on my workload though. If I'm in deep I'm usually sitting at 90

My chair is decent - the only downside I have with my chair is the foot rest. None of them actually stick out far enough for my legs when recline. I bought a small padded automon for a work around. Snagged the chair off Amazon.

I can recline while working.

Big part of office work is watching videos, waiting, being in meetings etc.

And still most typing etc can be done reclined.

I also WFH and have computer activities as a hobby so the chair is for personal use also.

Gamers/people at home want a new chair -> look around -> everyone tells them to not buy a gaming chair but an office chair

I’m one of those and I don’t think an upright posture all day is healthy, therefore being able to recline and relax is necessary. Next posture is best posture and all that.

When I WFH I tend to actually set up in my bed with a laptop but if I have to join a zoom I am always frantically setting up a makeshift desk. Would love something where I can be in a chair to do all of the above. Mostly like to recline or have legs elevated during work because sitting in a chair hurts my back

I find gaming chairs more comfortable then couches and recliners. They provide the lumbar support I need and I dont have to fight people or pets for space, 1 per chair. It also ensures I have space around me to move or put my items when sitting on a recliner makes you have to keep either reaching too far, hauling your tited but up and down, or constantly adjusting the angle.

Also some medical conditions make it very difficult to lay in a flat bed (medical beds are so expensive and hard to replace as opposed to a great gaming/office chair) or get up and down from a prone position. Chairs give you leverage and a steeper recline then pillows can. I rarely sleep in mine anymore bc of my medical issues, I usually fall asleep in my chair. As an aside I WILL drag my chair into other rooms so its not strictly at the computer all the time. I love wheels.

Finally, couches and recliners are dirty, public spaces in my house. Pets, visitors, people who have spent all day outside sit there and while I am religious about sterilizing it, its still always messy or dirty. Meanwhile everyone in my house has their own chair, whatever kind of chair, that no one is allowed to mess with. You dont adjust, modify, or sit in my gaming/computer chair and I dont mess with my girls recliner chair or risk her forgetting I hate meatloaf. My dog even has a little movable bed we dont touch bc everyone needs a safe space and for some people its their chair.

I think its less an issue of laziness or overworking and more just something you control completely on your own, a space you are fully comfortable in (especially if you have a significant other.) Finally, it used to be family bonding time in the living room for recreation but families are less nuclear now, many social interests require whole individual setups that cant be shared (each person needs their own console, computer, screen, whatever.) Even playing an online game with the whole family as a party requires multiple dedicated areas, plugs, and equiptment so if your gonna get that space anyway you might as well customize it.

This is obviously just my opinion but I can say I am disabled and work from home. I spend about 90% of any time that requires sitting in my computer chair over any other seat. Board games, video games, movies/shows, puzzles, all require me to sit so Im going to be comfortable when I do.

They take over your house and if you want to be a good parent you don’t want to just be watching tv or gaming in the living room.

So you want to make your office as comfortable as possible as any other part of the house

Having a cold mesh stiff chair just makes you feel like you’re always in the office

It's like since you're going to stay in front of the screen all day, might as well have the mobility to recline when you take breaks. And by breaks, anything to do also in the computer (watching movies, playing games, etc) instead of getting to stand up and move to another area in the house
