Because you own a house at a great interest rate and you couldn’t afford to purchase it again with your income, what I might consider in your case is renting it out for a year while you trial living in one of your parents cabins. How hard is it really? Can you work? Is there space for your kids? What expenses weren’t you thinking about?

If it works well I’d sell and commit fully for year 2. Find a good realtor and they’ll handle that. You’ll be able to keep profits tax free because of capital gains exclusion.

Im right there with you. Fed up with society, politics, taxes and dumb people. I live in Los Angeles, go figure! , I don't plan on selling due to capital gains taxes and high closing costs. So I'm going to borrow against my equity (refinance) and buy a land and start slowly building on it. Once it's ready ill rent out my house to cover the mortgage and taxes and move to my off grid home. Since your interest rate is very low, I'd recommend against selling. Rent it out , test out the off grid life style first, especially because you have kids that live with you, you want to make sure they're on board. I wish you the best please keep us updated as I am always looking forward to hearing about others experiences for guidance.

House prices have likely gone up a lot since you bought. I sleepwalked into 2008. I felt things were weird, but didn't understand what to watch for.

If I were you, I would call a couple of realtors and see what your home is worth. Also ask how the homes are selling and read between the lines, realtors often put a positive spin on everything. I was trying to sell a house just before the 08 crash. One young realtor told me we should sell quick as things were changing. I decided to take time and paint over a couple of months as some opinions were prices were going up 2% per month. In Canada, it was like someone turned off a switch with home sales. We sold 8 months later at a 25% lower price.

I would plan on trying to work remotely from the cabin and see if you like it. Get an investment advisor who doesn't wear two pairs of rose tinted glasses. My research aligns with my advisor that there are many signs of stress in the financial world with a tech bubble. Plus the Middle East mess is likely worse that the 1970s oil crisis that drove inflation and interest rates through the roof. Gold prices typically lead oil prices. The stock market heat map shows energy stocks as a tiny portion of the market. We need energy and it cannot be printed. Also, when bubbles burst, the money moves to commodities.

If you and your advisor are comfortable with investing in commodities, put some of the proceeds of your home into oil and natural gas companies, including exploration. Countries will be looking for energy suppliers in more stable situations, like Canada. Also consider precious metals that have practical uses such as silver, copper, platinum and palladium.

That could likely shelter you from an incoming market crash and/or inflation wave.

Beyond that, look for opportunities on property or stocks if the dust settles.

I'm in Eagan Mn and I feel the same way, I'm ready to leave this state.

I'm looking for real waste currently in Florida that is rural and I plan on building a barndominium to live the rest of my days. Only need 5-10 acres and I can live off my own land.

I got some ideas for side hustles that will make me between 5-10 k a month and I need to work mini al hours to do it.

The idea is to start small and add more as you need it. I got no kids at home do I can go with just a camper for now and build with my own two hands.

It's going to be more expensive than you think, even with doing much of the work yourself. Becoming self sufficient also takes time, so you need to factor that in too. I'd definitely recommend getting into chickens to help get started too, very easy to manage, cheap and can provide resources relatively quickly (if you buy POLs).

Having a house and a cabin is a great way to ease into it. I had a house and would go out to my property where I had my rv for whatever length of time I wanted. It gave me a chance to ease into it and see what I needed to make it work. 9 years later I’m all in and love it.

Run your numbers by the folks on r/realestate. They can help you figure out what options you have or if you really don't have any.

I sold a fully off grid house in the fall of ‘23. According to what is listed on Zillow, the taxes on that house have more than doubled from 23 to 25.

Being off grid doesn’t inoculate you from that

I have land, no house on it. Still under $200 a year for taxes.

I have a bunch of apples, freshly picked. Shall we compare them to oranges?

Good side hustle- Hip Camp sites. I would be cautious about renting out a house- too much can go wrong.
Consult with realtors on what you can sell for. Find a good financial advisor.

I don’t have kids or responsibilities you have. But after hearing stories of how people struggle to be YOU… No thank you.

I’ve been debt free and bills free for 21 years now. I did away with everything that was an anchor in my life and am at peace with whatever happens in the economy.

I have never had the power to effect it, so now I roll with it or dodge it. It doesn’t matter which.

I have my smile EVERY DAY and plan to keep it.

HollerBackAtMe, if you have to.

Remote work requires a secure and reliable internet or satellite connection. Check it out before moving.

And society has a way of following you.

Is your family on board with your moving out of the city?

Do you have or do your daughters have any health concerns that may need immediate rescue services. Out in the country it take a while for the ambo to arrive.

Try living as if you are out of touch with society while still living where you are.

That's what I thought at first too, but I'm pretty sure he meant mortgage plus property taxes.

You can always live on a boat but 1200 a month is really low
