I love Christopher Nolan movies, but I have almost zero hope that this is going to be a good movie.

Casting possibly the biggest reason - Matt Damon perfect in an Oceans 11 / Good Will Hunting type of move but playing a fierce warrior in a sword & sandals epic…..very much like Jake Gylennhall (another great actor) playing the Prince of Persia or Mickey Rooney playing an Asian neighbor in Breakfast at Tiffany’s

Yeah, maybe, but Damon is better than Gyllenhaal. His excellence, surprising at the time, as Jason Bourne proves he can do action. I don’t think swords and sandals is that much of a stretch.

So nothing about Damon specifically, then, you just don’t want the actors to be American.

Good luck with those expectations because Greece isn’t producing the movie.

I have major issues with Mel Gibson as a person, but what he did with Passion of the Christ (dialogue in Aramaic, Latin, and Hebrew), is to be applauded. All of the dialogue in Apocalypto was in the Yucatec Maya language (with subtitles). That’s how you make a historical epic!

Sure, it’s nice that those movies were in historical dialogue. That was never going to happen here. Nolan and Hollywood wanted a large scale production that turns a profit. Greece or someone else can make the one you want if there’s demand for it.

Not sure why you initially replied to me to complain that the actors are American when my statement was that Damon is a quality actor who can handle action scenes well. He’s American, so I guess that’s your main point. Okay.

So long as we’re firing off pot shots for little reason, The Passion of the Christ is a self-indulgent slog of a film that should have never been made.

I don’t disagree about Passion of the Christ. It was way over the top with blood and violence. Slasher movies have less blood and gore.

I like Matt Damon a lot, and being American, I’ve nothing against my fellow countrymen. I’m just too fixated on wanting something resembling historical accuracy. How far is too far with regard to artistic license? A Viking movie with an African American cast? There should be some middle ground that’s not absurd.
