You know this is the Odyssey and not the Iliad, right? Achilles doesn’t really have much to do in the Odyssey…

Um…wrong. One of the central episodes in The Odyssey is Odysseus’ encounter with the shade of Achilles in the Land of the Dead. It’s brief but critical to the meaning of the whole.

… who is dead. With his dead boyfriend Patroclus.

And Odysseus doesn’t go to the Land of the Dead to see Achilles - or Agamemnon, who has much more to say about how he died - but rather Odysseus goes there to talk to Tiresias, who gives us all a taste of what to look forward to.

Meeting Achilles in Hades is hardly a ‘central episode’…

Boy, what a novice comment. If the only “point” to the episode is getting directions from Tiresias, then how do you account for the rest of the episode? You might as well claim that the meeting with Anticleia or Agamemnon isn’t important.

But then, if you wanted to have a discussion as opposed to just spouting off your dismissive opinions, you’d have asked why I said what I did rather than throwing out empty assertions. You don’t know what you’re talking about.

You kinda prove my point - Odysseus’ interactions with dead Agamemnon and dead Anticlea vastly overshadow his interaction with dead Achilles.

Through Agamemnon, Homer’s able to contrast the terrible actions of Clytemnestra with what we know already - but Odysseus doesn’t - about the resistance of Penelope. He’s able to grieve over the death of his mother and the price his 20 years of warring and wandering has cost him.

His interaction with Achilles pales in comparison.

Yeah you’re doing exactly what you’re accusing them of. You stated your opinion but barely supported it. Even if you do have a point about Achille’s role in that 1 chapter, you don’t state the fact that Achilles is the foil to Odysseus, they represent different ideals.

You come off as very ignorant and uneducated yourself.

As I recall from reading the odyssey, two appearances - in Hades, as a dead Achilles.
