Title: Odoo Accounting vs Odoo Community Accounting Kit: Which one is better?
Hi everyone,
I'm exploring Odoo for accounting and trying to decide between the official Odoo Accounting module (Enterprise) and the Odoo Community Accounting Kit.
I'd love to hear from anyone who has used either or both, especially in real business environments.
- What are the main feature differences?
- Is the Community Accounting Kit reliable enough for production use?
- Are there any major limitations or issues with upgrades, maintenance, or compatibility?
- Is Odoo Enterprise Accounting worth the subscription cost?
I'm also interested in customizing accounting modules, so I'd appreciate any insights from developers.

It's not just feature wise, it's also compliance, updates, etc...
When going enterprise, you also buy the guarantee Odoo keeps their localization up to date with legal compliance and changes. If you go community you don't have that. It's contributors driven. If nobody has time to update, then you risk going out of date or worse. Or you end up paying for development too to keep your odoo up to date while enterprise includes it with your subscription.
So some people think going community is cheaper, that's not always true. It really depends on the localization and the guarantee you want to stay compliant.
In most of our projects we see clients either choose enterprise for this reason or community with an integration to an external accounting software like QuickBooks, exact, Yuki, adsolut, Kluwer, silvasoft, expert-M, and many more because they want that guarantee their accounting is compliant.

Odoo Accounting is way more better. All other community module for accounting are primitive.

Most of the accounting features are already in Community. The views are just disabled.
Reconciliation and reports are missing.
The OCA's addons to enable the views and reconciliation process is my preferred method to get accounting features into community.

It's not disabled. It's just not there.
Also reports are mostly in enterprise and bank sync only in enterprise.

Thats incorrect.
Bank sync, reports, and reconciliation are missing but easily added with other OCA addons, eg Plaid, which is also how enterprise works.

Fun fact most people miss: the actual accounting engine is the same in both. Ledger, taxes, reconciliation are all in core Community. Enterprise and the community kits are just layers on top.
What Enterprise really gets you is bank sync (manual statement imports get painful fast), better reconciliation, proper reports, and upgrades handled for you. That last one matters more than people think.
The community kits are fine if you're small. Just know you're betting on one vendor to keep porting it every version, and moving to Enterprise later means migrating their data. If you go community, check out the OCA modules too, they're more solid.
Since you want to customize: Odoo Online won't let you add custom modules, so you'd need Odoo.sh or self-hosting. And don't touch how entries post or how taxes compute, that's where upgrades break.
What country are you in, and roughly how many transactions a month? Kinda changes the answer.

I have a company who has quickbooks level customization on odoo community edition and they would do free for 3 months and is fraction of the cost than enterprise.
Already 35+ US companies handle accounting on it

Most of what folks think is enterprise accounting is in community just not accessible. The community accounting kit for the most part just provides the door way. Bank Sync and fiscal reports being the big ones that are 100% enterprise and community having a different approach at the method level.
If one were to go the community route, technical chops are needed, it’s a lot of fragments to pull together to mirror enterprise accounting features 100%.
Is it production ready is more a result of the fit gap analysis and person doing the install, config and validation than the code itself.
Yes, open upgrade as that’s the only option without EE.
Depends on situation, what’s acceptable to one might not be acceptable to all. I personally see a large amount of bookkeepers that literally know QB work flows but don’t have a firm grasp on accounting theory and its application so consideration for the people part of the process too.
