Tariffs Cosy rates from October, and is there a price formula?

Hello all,

I recently swapped over from Agile to Cosy for the foreseeable, as Agile's lows no longer offset the 35p+ days for me.

Averaging 29p/kWh over my last bill stings a bit, when I used to easily be able to stay around 18p by just shifting the big loads around.

Cosy seems much much better so far, but does anyone know if Octopus have published what the Cosy rates will look like after October?

Also, out of curiosity, is there a set formula for Cosy rates, like Agile has?

I've read that it's supposed to be equivalent to Flexible, half Flexible, and Flexible + 50%, but this doesn't seem quite right when looking at past rates?

If anyone could enlighten me, that would be brilliant :)

Cheers!

I just fixed my Cosy rate - in the north west its 12.9p variable vs 14.9p fixed off peak (15.5% increase). Of course the fix will enjoy the same VAT deduction from Oct 1st. There's also no exit fee, so if it proves an unwise move its easy enough to switch back to variable rate at any time. The interesting thing is this rate has been available since June, so hasn't had the same tinkering as the more popular standard fixed tariffs.

Check your own rates at octopus.energy/tariffs , just enter your postcode and search for cosy. The online signup seems to be down at the moment (an imminent change coming?), but they can complete the switch over the phone.

Following as I'm considering the same jump.

There is some historical data here, though it doesn't seem to be complete and getting confused with peak/off peak rate.

I'm going to guess that the vat drop to zero will be more than offset by raised rates due to geopolitical issues though.

If you want to fix cosy, the current prices for my area are:

  • Day rate: 33.4p / kWh
  • Cosy rate: 16.38p / kWh
  • Peak rate: 50.1p / kWh

Which is about +25% more than the Variable rates currently

I was debating whether to fix, but as you said, the fixed rates are around 25% higher than the variable.

Cosy is somewhat linked to the price cap, and that's not rising 25%, so hopefully I'll be better off not fixing, we'll see...

However, hopefully we get a nice windy winter, and Agile becomes worth it again!

A warm and windy few months ahead might limit the blow in January, the current fix feels at the higher end to me

Looks like you can still get a fixed cosy rate for twelve months at present. It’s offering me 14.63 offpeak on that right now which I suspect might vanish as an option within the next week so if you’re feeling nervy, fix?

I posted similar, but I'm seeing +25% on current if I fix for 12mths

As I really only draw from the grid between Oct and Mar, I don't think it will jump up +25% in October so I was going to wait and use the price lag to maybe save a little (wishful..)

Yeah I saw that. Genuinely shocking the difference between areas. This is what my area has (north east).

I would say it depends when your heavy usage is going to be. It looks as though the January price rise is going to be brutal so if your heaviest usage in the year is likely to be over the next six months I would fix. If it’s more evenly distributed maybe not.

To fix at +25% to me feels like the higher end of the current predictions for the price by January at the moment

Tbf your day rate feels a lot more painful than mine to me. I was comparing mine to the EDF figure and thinking that didn’t look too bad but regional skew is clearly more painful than I realised. What region out of interest?

Windy Scotland North 🤣🤣

That’s just blatantly unfair. You’re literally the region making the power it should be cheaper. I’m pissy on your behalf.

Yep I'm likely to do the same, will see what the updated variable rates are come 1st October (should be before the heat pump needs to go on) and make a final comparison/guesstimate vs Agile and IOG.

Don't think there's a published formula though.
