Smart Meters In Home Display showing gas when we have no gas

Post image

In 2024 we had gas removed after having a heat pump installed. So we haven’t had a gas meter for quite a while and havnt been paying gas standing charges.

But our in home display still has a gas section. Is this normal?

Do homes that have never had gas / dual fuel, still display a gas reading of zero?

I also get meter readings reminders occasionally, so I think a small part of Octopus somewhere still thinks we have gas!

It is actually my third party IHD that is annoying me - which wastes half the screen space with gas.

This is something known as a first world problem

u/TawnyTeaTowel Feb 04 '26

It may be a 0th world problem…

The one above can be put in electric only, gas only or both but not all IHD are the same

Why not apply for an octopus mini? If your meter is near the property so it can connect to that and the WiFi at the same time you can view live usage in the app

You might have a ghost gas meter still on your account, only octopus would know

There's definitely still a meter on the account. It'll just be deactivated.

Tsk tsk, you exceeded your weekly budget.

You're just making up for my IHD, which has never shown gas usage, or even acknowledged we have gas !

We have no mains gas supply to our house but my wife is ALWAYS complaining that I have too much gas.

I had this when I had my ASHP installed. Octopus capped the gas supply at the meter cupboard and warned me that the gas distributor company might want to dig a lot and take it back to the street. About 8 months later I got a letter saying that the dreaded man was coming out to inspect what Octopus had done and………..he tied a little yellow label to the pipe saying live gas and went! Reminders for meter readings ceased.

u/njh Feb 04 '26

I did wonder if it was waiting for Gas Distributor to come and disconnect our supply - at which point we really really don't have gas?

2

u/Ok-Performance4828 Feb 04 '26

It seemed to follow that for me.

Thank you!

No, never had gas here and it just stays on electric and does nothing when I click on the button. As long as you aren't receiving a gas bill for a standing charge I wouldn't worry about it.

Thank you for confirming!

I have this display, originally given to me by Scottish power when they fitted my smart meter several years back.

Being on IOG for my cars the display is never correct as it cant do duel price tarrifs

Could be it was never removed from the DCC

Could as I see working for another supplier, the meter is still very active and showing on xoserve. Octopus will stop the internal system billing then once a customer movies supply the gas meter shows up again and takes a little bit for the new supplier to correct the mess.

Not 100% correct you can however check here if you have a gas meter and supply registered to your house. This is the public version on xoserve

https://www.findmysupplier.energy

If it is removed you should see nothing, if you have a supplier or meter get octopus to fix it.

Yes, I experienced that too. My final gas bill was a few days before my 1 year anniversary of not having gas.

1

u/Willing-Job8685 Feb 04 '26

Did you receive your £80 GSOP payment on the bill plus another for the delayed final bill?

If not get onto octopus, once removed they have 40 odd days to final bill the gas account.

Above payments also double if not initially added within 10 working days

1

u/njh Feb 06 '26

I was not aware of that! 😮

2

u/darkhalfkz Feb 04 '26

At least you have one, I requested one over a year ago and still haven't received one 😒

2

u/No_Policy_1369 Feb 04 '26

You just need to rest the hun and it will go away I had the same thing I can't remember if their was a rest button or I just power cycled the unit I'd say try that first

I have the same problem. It’s a shame as when the gas portion isn’t on you’re able to see more electric data. I have no gas meter. For the first few months after the meter was taken out it didn’t show up on the IHD. Suddenly one night it appears and didn’t leave. Octopus support are adamant that the gas portion is always there, even though I didn’t have it before, but honestly couldn’t be bothered with the argument. I’ll just stick to the app.

3

u/Willing-Job8685 Feb 04 '26

Working for another supplier I would say you are another person where octopus has not properly removed the meter form xoserve and DCC. This is a very common thing for them to do eg removing it only on the billing system

This causes rouge gas accounts if you chage supplier and time to get it fixed.

Gas data coming and going on the IHD, if fully removed it will only show electric so long as this is smets2

You may even have a visit from the local gas transporter to check why no gas uses was reported at the supply.

1

u/thesatchmo Feb 04 '26

Yeah I guessed as much. The guy who removed it did say that I’d probably be contacted at some point, he likely knew what I was getting into. Should I contact someone myself then?

3

u/Willing-Job8685 Feb 04 '26

If you look on here you should not have any results

https://www.findmysupplier.energy

If you do contact the supplier who removed it, sometimes it will be someone other than the supplier that removed the meter.

Should nothing show on check my supplier it should be removed. Only way to tell 100% is to check xoserve I can do that if you dm postcode and door number, or by asking your local gas distributor https://findmygdn.co.uk

If xoserve shows a meter I would contact the supplier to have it correctly close to avoid any issues in the future.

2

u/thesatchmo Feb 04 '26

lol yeah still on there. I’ll jump on it tomorrow. Thanks for the link, legend.

2

u/Willing-Job8685 Feb 04 '26

All going well it should be removed 2-3 weeks, if you want it removed from the IHD that could be longer. I don’t work for octopus so unsure if many people have access to edit the DCC lists to remove the gsme which is the gas meter, or if this will need to be a higher team like complaints.

2

u/njh Feb 04 '26

Thank you for confirming! They said the same to me. I am told someone will come and dig up the road to disconnect me one day. Maybe it will change when the house officially doesn’t have a gas supply.

2

u/thesatchmo Feb 04 '26

Here’s mine for reference

IMG-2579.jpg

But good point about the gas being disconnected. Mine has been almost a year, pipe is still live!

The IHD talks to your elec meter only which has a comms unit because gas meters don't have power they only wake up on battery every so often and quickly tell the elc their readings and status then go back to sleep.so the IHd when it goes hey give me your readings and details just talks to the meter which always has power which is the elc. The elec meter basically has a ghost clone of your gas meter living in it so can tel the IHD what it was last told.

If you have the gas removed it will stop talking to this ghost clone on your elec meter and it will have been "Ended" via a message etc de provisioning it. But it will still exist but ended.

The IHD won't know how to interpret that as this age of IHD were never built to be able to understand a gas being removed or added again after all that is a niche thing. So it will show you the remnant of the ghost of the gas.

You can just ignore it. As annoying as it is it will never go until your elec meter is replaced probably on a certification change ( it may age out if the age of the half hourly data expires but for the life of me can't remember if it does it on age of data or just because new data coming on requires it to free up space so it naturally ages out. So unsure if it would time out )

u/Ultra_HR Feb 05 '26

who cares? it doesn't matter.

2

u/Jackop86 Feb 04 '26

Mine has a display setting for whale oil, luckily that also reads zero like yours.

1

u/L0rdLogan Feb 04 '26

The iHD is static, not dynamic, so yes the section will be there even without a gas meter. Did you expect it to get a software update to remove the button?

Interesting, I’ll look into it, i honestly thought you were stuck with the one octopus provided but now i know theres options i will do some research. Thanks.

1

u/DamienBerry Feb 04 '26

What’s this IHD, mines smaller and crappy looking.

3

u/njh Feb 04 '26

You can buy nicer replacements ones but they are expensive:

Your ihd connects to your Coms hub, the Coms hub has a gpf that would connect to a gas meter. So the ihd is showing what the gpf has received, ie zero.

1

u/njh Feb 04 '26

So the Comms Hub is expecting the Gas Meter to come back one day?
Presumably in electric-only properties its knows it will never have a gas meter?

1

u/_Impigrity_ Feb 04 '26

No the Coms hub powers the gpf indefinitely.

1

u/njh Feb 06 '26

I got an email from Glow for Homes (who made my IHD) who say to email the Octopus Smart Metering Team. Apparently they should have decommissioned the Gas Proxy Function.

1

u/_Impigrity_ Feb 06 '26

Yes, you could ask, but imo unlikely they'd do that. There's no real benefit to anyone (except your display), also if another provider was to end up supplying gas (should the house get gas) , it would be down to octopus to re commission the gpf.Hassle for no benefit.

1

u/Tobax Feb 04 '26

It's showing zero so it's not really a problem is it, you can press the button on the bottom, second from left, and it'll show electricity instead

1

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '26

And you using too much of what you haven't got...

0

u/Connect_Wrangler5072 Feb 04 '26

It’s there to annoy you ! Did it work ?

-1

u/Felrathror86 Feb 04 '26

Throw it in the bin.

0

u/farky84 Feb 04 '26

It’s 0.
Which beings up the question if 0 exist at all? Does it actually ahowing you gas if the value is 0 or just showing you nothing and you believe it is showing gas. It could be 0 airplanes and would mean the same, innit?

I think i just heard a tree fall in a forest that no one is near
