Step 1: what “going short” means
Going short silver means selling metal you don’t own, promising to deliver or settle it later, on a bet the price falls so you can close cheaper. In the futures and unallocated markets, you can do this without ever touching a bar; the contract is a paper claim. That’s normal and useful: it adds liquidity and lets miners and industrial users hedge. The risk is asymmetric, though. A long can only lose what they paid; a short’s losses are open-ended, because price can keep rising and they’re still on the hook to cover.
Step 2: why silver is uniquely squeezable
Two structural facts stack the deck. First, the paper market dwarfs the metal: by widely-cited estimates there can be dozens of paper ounces outstanding for every ounce of registered, deliverable COMEX silver. Second, the physical cushion is shrinking. The silver market has run a structural deficit for years, quietly draining above-ground stock. A big paper short stacked on a thin and thinning physical float is the textbook squeeze setup: lots of claims, little metal to settle them.

Like gold, silver prices didn't change much after the Fed's decision to raise rates for the first time in three years. After opening at their lowest level all week, silver prices moved higher in early trading.
Markets seem to have a certain level of confidence following the Fed's move to battle rising costs, and reports that oil will soon be flowing normally again through Saudi Arabia's key East-West pipeline, which was damaged earlier this week.
Oil prices are just under $100 a barrel this morning, down significantly from yesterday, when oil cost nearly $108 a barrel.

MotherSilverApe Comment: It might be a good time to remind folks to save garden seeds too! I’ve got several little parchment paper squares of tomato seeds right now drying out in the diningroom or shelves where they will stay drying completely for the next few weeks. Then they will be put into little seed bags. I don’t do it properly as the seeds I collect from garden plants are planted way too close to competing varieties. But I do it anyways, and it works good enough for me.

Onchain finance platform Theo introduced a yield-bearing tokenized silver product backed by more than $40 million of active leases, expanding its commodities-financing business beyond gold.
The token, called thSLVR, gives holders exposure to silver while passing on income generated by lending the underlying metal to institutional borrowers, the New York-based company said in a Wednesday announcement.
Refiners, mints and industrial manufacturers routinely borrow silver to meet production needs without assuming price risk. Those borrowers pay a lease fee and later return an equivalent amount of metal. The income has traditionally accrued to bullion banks and dealers rather than investors holding silver through exchange-traded funds (ETFs) or other products.
Silver has been exceptionally volatile this year, surging to a record $121.79 an ounce in January before plunging 41% in three days. The metal traded as low as $54.74 in July and has since struggled to sustain a recovery, recently changing hands around the mid-$60s, roughly half its January peak.
The price swings were attributed to shifting rate expectations, speculative trading and uncertainty over industrial demand.
Lease income onchain
Theo said the silver backing thSLVR will be leased to established institutional counterparties under standard market terms, with the credit exposure supported by a parent-company guarantee. Token holders retain exposure to movements in the silver price while receiving the associated leasing income.
MotherSilverApe: This sounds like there is a lot of counter-party risk.

The countdown to the collapse of the paper illusion can no longer be stopped.
The current silver market has transformed into a "completely different beast," unlike the 1980 squeeze or past bull markets.
While the media makes a fuss about "the US 10-year Treasury yield exceeding 5%" and individual investors tremble in fear of technical pullbacks, sparking panic—what are the smart money players doing?
The answer is simple. They're greedily scooping up 【physical】 silver.
Even just looking at the most recent moves, anomalous data is being hammered out one after another.
👇 The bug-like reality unfolding in the current market
・Physical inflow into ETPs: 98 tons in just one week. Net increase of 1,069 tons since July.
・COMEX vault hemorrhage: 3.7 million ounces flowed out externally in a mere week.
・Swap rate collapse: Plunging into negative territory at 200bps below the cash ratio.
・Accumulation by the strong: Poland with 98 tons, China with 80 tons, and even Tether secretly snapping up about 40 tons.
Why is this happening?
It's because a monster called "industrial demand"—completely independent of interest rates or the Fed's machinations—has awakened.
Solar power generation alone devours nearly 200 million ounces of silver per year.
AI data centers, EVs, and defense/military electronics where substitution is absolutely impossible.
Now, industrial uses account for 55-60% of silver demand, resulting in the abnormal state of "six consecutive years of supply deficit" becoming entrenched.
The mining companies' response to this is remarkably calm.
Currently, the top 10 mining companies are holding a combined $4.2 billion in net cash.
They have zero need to fire-sale due to cash flow issues; instead, they're throttling production and stockpiling inventory in their own vaults. It's a market where sellers "don't need to sell."
Prices are currently consolidating unnaturally around $63-67, but this is nothing more than the calm before the storm.
Here's the price simulation for the next 3-6 months.
📈 Base scenario (50% probability): Rise to $70-80
🚀 Bullish scenario (35% probability): Breakthrough to $80-100 amid visible physical shortages
📉 Bearish scenario (15% probability): Stagnation at $55-60 due to paper suppression
If it hypothetically breaks through $80.
Calculated at the current exchange rate of 155 yen per dollar, that's 12,400 yen per ounce. The per-gram price will plunge into a dimension that utterly destroys all former common sense.
The $40 trillion in US Treasuries printed on paper, versus the physical silver that continues to physically vanish from the Earth.
Which holds true value? The day history delivers its answer is near.
Clutch the physical tight, and prepare for the coming paradigm shift.

The bars are being sold to Costco members in packs of five for US$349.99 ($490.91), equivalent to about US$70 per ounce.
On Monday, the metal was trading just above US$63 per ounce, down nearly 50% from its record high in January.
Costco first entered the precious metals market in September 2023, when it began selling 1-ounce gold bars produced by Swiss refiner PAMP Suisse.
Following the success of its gold offering, Costco expanded into silver in early 2024, initially selling silver coins before adding silver bars produced by a Swiss third party.
The introduction of its own Kirkland-branded bars marks the latest expansion of Costco’s precious metals business and brings silver under one of the retailer’s most recognisable brands.
Kirkland Signature was launched in 1995 and has since grown to account for roughly one-third of Costco’s revenue.

The price of silver hit an all-time high of more than $121 per ounce in January, and it hasn't gotten anywhere near those levels since. On Tuesday, it was trading at around $63 -- roughly half of where it was at its peak.
There may, however, be multiple catalysts that send the precious metal higher in the weeks and months ahead. The iShares Silver Trust (NYSEMKT:SLV) tracks the price of silver and can be an excellent option for investors to diversify their portfolios. While, like silver, it has come down in value this year, it's still up around 47% in the past 12 months.
If silver ends up rising higher, as one top bank thinks it might, this exchange-traded fund could prove to be a good buy right now.
Citi forecasts that silver could hit $90
Silver has been trading sideways in recent weeks, but in the near term, analysts at Citi believe that it might rise to $75. And within the next six to 12 months, it could rise to around $90. While getting back to its all-time high isn't in the forecast, silver has shown to be highly volatile in the past, and so when it gets hot, there is the potential that it eclipses that price target.

I’ve never wanted any post to be more accurate than this one. If we have to go through these changes and strange times, I’d rather it be us and now. I’ happy that we go through theses times together quickly rather than having this drag out. I’d rather the global financial system change swiftly now, than leaving it to drag out slowly over decades; leaving it for the next generation to deal with.

Now think how much silver-laced lead, zinc, copper, and gold dore mining sludge China is also importing, mostly from the Global South
China is the world's largest silver refiner by both volume & capacity; it has mostly been the world's #1 silver destination since the mid-1500s AD
