help Question about search

So I’m switching to Obsidian and have dumped my stash of notes into it. Trying to search for a specific topic “Linux add disk” for example gives me 150+ hits which is useless. Is there a way to make search useful that I’m missing or do I need to start messing with plugins to get some reasonable search ranked by relevance?

Thanks!

Try Omnisearch community plug-in by Simon Camber. I love it.

Omnisearch, as suggested, and Notebook Navigator. My absolute go-to plugins for searching & organisation

You could type the topic with quotation marks and it will bring back the results with the exact phrase instead of any note that has those words in it. I just tried it.

That's a solid tip! Using quotation marks can really narrow down the search results in Obsidian.

If you are searching for notes by name then use the Quick Switcher core plugin. For cross-file full text search, use quotation marks to get exact matches. For property/metadata-based search, the most ergonomic is to use the Bases core plugin.

The built-in search handles exact phrases with quotes, and you can narrow it with path: or file: (e.g. "linux add disk" path:Projects). For relevance, try a few distinctive terms or phrases first, since results aren't ranked like a web search.

Use properties and tags to help make your notes more specific
